Rafa Benitez had admitted that he would still sign Barry from Aston Villa if he had the money to do so.
Barry is about to enter the last 18 months of his contract and although Villa say they are happy to let the season pass they could now have new bids for the England star.
However Liverpool now face rivalry from newly-rich Manchester City, with Mark Hughes keen to land Barry next month – and with the money to outbid them in the market.
A massive tug-of-war is about to start with both Alonso and Barry involved – as they were in the summer – but now with a third club pulling in another direction. (Daily Mirror)
We all know how this one ran and ran in the summer until Martin O’Neill put the kybosh on the deal and since then Barry has been in good form for Aston Villa but if news of interest from both Liverpool and Man City is indeed accurate then the England international may start thinking of a move again. Apparently the valuation has dropped from the reported £18m six months ago to £13m now and then there is of course the possibility that Gareth could buy out his own contract and therefore move for effectively nothing but I don’t see him selling his club down the river in that manner, not after the service he has put in at the midlands outfit. I have a gut feeling that he will move this time but maybe not until the summer and i think he could be tempted by the Eastlands move in particular as a move to Anfield could result in his not being a certainty for a starting eleven spot. Do Liverpool fans think the club need to make this signing or do they have more than enough talent in their midfield?

So this old chesnut comes back, once again. We have a number of midfielders so good some not so good.
Question 1 How are we going to pay for Mr G Barry ?
Question 2 Who are we going to sell ? Alonso ?
Question 3 Where is going to play ?
Question 4 Do we really need or want him ?
We have been linked with Kerrison, a little knownen 19 year old Columbian, is he another Lucas in disguise?
GAGA - December 8th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
please pool sign him cos he is being linked to city now i dont want him,he is a good footballer but i think a settled one where he is a move might not be right for him plus i dont think he wud suit city or pool but i hope u get him if it means us not.

pure bullshit.

After all u did 2 his carreer last time out, the only favour u can do him is buy him, moreover u went with a little over 13mill the last time out, so whats 13mill now that u can’t cough out.
Also we need not sell Alonso to get our man, as the sells of Pennant, dossena, and other fring playas will do raise the cash.

lucas is being played out of position firstly, hence he cant nor wot shine , he is not being allowed to play his natural game which is an attacking midfielder, his confidence is low, i still believe there is something in lucas that is good enough for liverpoool fc, its a huge disappointment to me that its not shining through for whatever reason
you dont get to captain brazil u 20s without being a good player
and no way sell alonso
but do buy barry
Remzi - December 9th, 2008 at 8:07 am
Hm , if we buy barry then have not place in the first team for alonso or mascherano, and i wont see no one of them in the bench, i dont know if u think that we need to buy barry then buy him but first of all u should think about some things

anyone else impressed with insua s performance last week

I agree with the Lucas comments. This lad is a class player but being played out of position. Imagine if Ashley Young for example moved to a Brazilian team and then they played him on the right wing and his form suffered. Would we say he was shit. No we’d question the team. This lad won young player of the year in his last season in Brazil. There is somethign there, i think rafa just has to take the shackles off. Play with one defensive midfielder Alonso or Mascherano, and gerrard with either Lucas or Keane, behind Torres. Save two defensive midfielders for big away games.
I think Barry would be a bad move, we have other priorities.
calvo - December 9th, 2008 at 9:37 am
the barry has passed as l´pool have other areas to concentrate on namely full back and adequate cover for torres.why upset a midfield that has literally out performed the rest of the leagues.
yes there will be injuries but l´pool have enuff cover in that department.
remember when newcastle were top(many moons ago!)and they bought another striker(asprilla)and consequently lost the league when they should have bought a defender.
besides if its a midfielder that rafa wants why not go for a midfielder thats different to what is already there…like a offensive/creative midfielder.
Coggin - December 9th, 2008 at 9:48 am
Well it’s either Barry or Alonso I don’t think we can find places for both or afford them both, also what happens if we fail to get Barry and Alonso’s form then suffers because he thinks Rafa doesn’t want him again, he has been playing really well this season so wait till the summer and then look at the situation. If Man C are also keen on Barry then there is no way we can compete on the price as they look like they will just outbid anyone at the moment. We have a greater need to fill the winger role and maybe right back cover.
Georgiie - December 9th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Loadd of crap no place 4 him in or midfield.
sell robbie nd buy diego from wender bremen or podolski
9torres - December 9th, 2008 at 10:13 am
unless he was bought and played as left back and used as cover for the midfield positions? doubt we have the money for that sort of luxury however.

Anybody else noticed that Benayoun seems to be giving interviews to the S*n?? according to sky sports news.

“So for now I’m happy to put that behind me and focus on doing my bit for the team. The problem for me is the manager is not rotating as much as he used to.
“It is the same 11 players every week, and they are doing so well, so no one can really complain.
“I have to be patient, but I’m still not sure whether, in the long term, my future will be here.”
9torres, these are his quotes from the sky news report, I really wish this lad would pack his bags in Jan and move on. Yes he scored at the weekend but his overall contribution to the team is poor, unless he becomes a genius over the next couple of weeks, he should be sold. He should also keep his mouth shut and someone should remind him about that newspaper, or maybe his actions are deliberate and is trying to force a move. Not sure.
9torres - December 9th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Indeed, he has done nothing to warrant being given playing time. Like i have said previously, he is a confidence player so maybe that goal against Blackburn will spur him on to up his performances, either that or he is playing to try and get a move. imho players should only speak to the press about the club and the city in a positive light, anything else should result in a fine unless it is sanctioned by the club.
9torres - December 9th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Lucas and Alonso to start centre mid tonight
calvo - December 9th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
i feel that at west ham he was the obvious talent there and would dictate the way they played, whereas at l´pool he was never gonna allowed that luxury as l´pool have a system and players that are better.he maybe a confidence player, however at l´pool or a club of that stature the fact that you´ve been bought should give a player confidence.I think it maybe that he is out of his comfort zone(i.e.has to battle for a place)that has effected him.
and i dont think l´pool will miss him either.

Leave Barry and take Agbonglahoar. better option.,
Portsmouth Rocks - December 10th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
barry should stay where he is if he knows which side his bread is buttered on
or go to arsenal as they really need him
i think liverpool fans disrespect barry so why would he want to go there
he is a class player and i believe any top 4 team would improve with him in there line up
i also agree about alonso , no way should liverpool sell him if they want barry they should keep alonso too
alonso is a very good player

and agrees with spion about the neccesity for two defensive midfielders for big away matches but for matches we ought to win then no way
and for matches we ought to win play babel instead of kuyt on the right and play kuyt in big away matches where we need his defesnsicve qualities and his knack of sacoring big goals, its tough at liverpool now there are many big game players riera needs reminding he isnt untouchable either and rafa did so at blackburn and lo and behold he bangs ina winder goal last night ,
we have so many options to our team its amazing

“we have so many options to our team its amazing”
You might want to pull the reigns in a small bit there lad, we beat a poor enough Blackburn side, and irrespective of the scoreline, we didnt dominate the game, we have serious issue’s in front of goal. We also beat a poor enough PSV side as well, I dont want to be a doom and gloom merchant but we are not on fire and I know we are going to come unstuck infront of goal again, no matter what has happened in the last week, we need more attacking options / firepower, from the full backs up to the forward line. End of.
