West Ham will attempt to use Matthew Upson as bait to land Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner
Gianfranco Zola has earmarked the Danish hitman as a direct replacement for Craig Bellamy, who is poised to complete a £15 million move to Manchester City this week.
But with severe financial restraints in place at Upton Park and the unwillingness of Arsenal to discuss a temporary deal for Bendtner, Zola will offer Upson to the Gunners for cash and the striker.
The Hammers initially enquired about taking Bendtner on loan until the end of the season, but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger made it clear he will only consider selling the powerful striker.
Upson was a former trainee with the Gunners, but quit to join Birmingham in a £2million deal in February 2003 after becoming frustrated at the lack of first-team opportunities.
His form and growing maturity on the field eventually led to England recognition. (Sunday Mirror)
Bendtner is a player who irritates many and one who really doesn’t look good enough to be starting matches for the Emirates outfit and many even doubt his inclusion in the squad as a whole. Yesterday against Plymouth he continually lost the ball and if he was to be the makeweight in a deal to bring Upson back to the north London club then I am sure the Arsenal fans would not lose any sleep. If this source is correct and Zola does seem likely to sell their in form centre back then Wenger will surely be interested. Apparently West Ham value their England international in the £11m bracket and I would imagine therefore Arsenal would need to stump up £4-5m as part of the deal. Do Gunners fans think this move would make sense for the club?

i’d rate bendtner over van persie but i’m a west ham fan so don’t see everything they do, i’d be very reluctant to let upson go, he’s a solid and dependable centre back who doesn’t make many mistakes, i think he’d save us more points than bendtner would get us.
John - January 4th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Very good deal. Peter Odemwingie will be a good buy and is a huge gooner too…Wenger should look in that direction as well.
goonerbob - January 4th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Just heard from reliable sourse Stephen Ireland and his agent spotted with Wenger at emirates
adam - January 4th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
curi.bendtner over van persie.r you mad.van persie is far better then that waste of space
Gunner Andy - January 4th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
Why would we want Upson back especially for £15 MILLION, this would be a desperate move for a 30 year old player and smacks of panic buying by Arsene.
anon - January 4th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
well done Andy, nice of you to mis-read.
The article says that Man City are buying Bellamy for £15million not that Arsene wants Upson for £15million.
I would suggest getting rid of Bendtner as he doesnt look effective against any of the”big” premiership sides.
I get the impression that Gallas is on borrowed time the way he’s been behaving the last year.
As for Curi’s transfer suggestions lets just invite all the Toure’s in the world and name it Toure FC,lol.

Whatever, we need a good defender and he is one…so I’m not arguing!
It will be sad to see bendtner go, but if we are in such a “credit crunch” then it’s best to get the necessities that will help save our season.

i live in Australia. Give me 24 hours to fly from Australia to Lndon, hire a car and l willbe there to drive him there myself.
Unfortunatley it will not happen. With offer coming from other champions leage clubs, there is no way Bendtner will go to West am for a relegation fight, yu must be kiddig

its true stephen ireland is going to emirates FACT….
my friend works in coffee shop in emirates and ireland was there with agent.
even though hughes rates stephen ireland highely he reckons he is to attacking and he thinks they need defensive midfielder so he will sign scott parker

arsene shld quit being a scout 4 other clubs n buy playes.get arteta 4 us man!!!
Theo - January 5th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Well i will prefer getting rid of Nicklas Bendtner…He is not worth a striker, He’s very slow and not outstanding. To me i think a big team like Arsenal should keep big strikers i mean outstanding strikers not just an ordinary striker.
RayParlourForPresident - January 5th, 2009 at 11:45 am
Osman would be a better buy than Arteta as he has the defensive capabilities to replace Cesc and then drop into a holding role when Cesc is back, I have been voicing my concerns over Bendtner for along time but I would rather get cash for him than a defender who wasn’t good enough for us first time around.
DaveTheHammer - January 5th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Bendtner would be a great signing, but at the moment all im seeing is defenders leaving west ham and nobody to replace them, Neill is going to AC and if Upson goes who will we replace them with?
Any ideas?
the gooner - January 5th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
even if we do get upson i would much rather have djourou @ centre back as gallas is off 2 italiy or france personally ill be happy 2 see him go as in the first place it should have been money from chelsea for cashley cole£££££
plz plz plz wenger buy arteta
Poor Spuds - January 5th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
most of wenger’s favorite boys r t shittiest footballers to ever play for arsenal…
read them as
1. almunia
2. bendtner
3. eboue
4. diaby
5. song
6. senderos
so its logical tat such a deal wud never happen… stop dreamin guys….
wenger wont do such a deal… cuz he loves bendtner like his own son….so he’ll keep playing bendtner and bendtner wil keep screwing up games for arsenal…
plz wenger we beg u to open ur eyes…. if u cant buy players u can atleast sell them… remember sellin GIVES us t cash to buy….
this current crop of players dont deserve to play in t prem… they’re of t league 2 standard….
Hope wenger realizes this sooner rather than later…

upson wasn’t good enough years ago maybe but now he is. swap toure for ireland and bendtner for upson, thiss will not cost us too much in money and gallas can go end of season when we can start lookin for a defender to replace him then. gallas and upson wud work at the back and ireland can do a job for us in middle of the park plus he soots and scores goals.
dazza - January 5th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
are you mad upson for bendtner we would not take bendtner on a free let alone for 10m plus. he is not a prem player.
calvo - January 5th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
arteta would be just another little technical player like all the others.while a very talented player he would not be the answer.
wenger could do alot worse than go for senna or yaya or di rossi.
swap bendtner for upson…DEFINATELY.
get rid off gallas(toure has never been the same since he arrived),keep toure and have him and upson 2gether.
eduardo is soon to make a come back and the extra cash can go towards a striker.
afc - January 5th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
have bendtner he’s shit !
we’ll take that defender though
Anonymous - January 5th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
arsene wenger should get vieira in the midfield instead of having denilson
Naninho - January 5th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
arsene should get vieira back from inter cause we need a experienced player in the midfield instead of denilson
bob - January 5th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

yes gd deal bentber is rubish
GAZ - January 5th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
Seems swap deal with Ireland 4 Toure is going ahead……
…..sad to see Toure leave, has been a great player for us.
GAZ - January 5th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Why go with Upson when Distain is a much better player & with Pompey needing the cash it would be likely
RayParlourForPresident - January 6th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
did someone seriously suggest bringing Patrick Viera back to Arsenal….
are they referring to the 34 year old Patrick Viera who barely stays fit enough to play 20 minutes a game.
what drugs are you on, seriously,
gunner - January 6th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
everton wont let arteta go… so please all you dreamers stop!
wenger should buy Ireland, kranjcar, Given and upson.
one of the young midfielders has to go, we have too many and it would be pointless to have 6 or 7… out of the current ones they all stand out to me (diaby, denilson, ramsey, wilshere) except song who i think is no better than average.
also is there any point in having bischoff in the team.. yeah ur right, bischoff who?
the team should be:
GK: Given, Almunia, Fabianski
DEF: Sagna, Eboue, Toure, Upson, Gallas, Djourou, Silvestre, Clichy
MID: Rosicky, Nasri, Ireland, Fabregas, Kranjcar, Denilson, Diaby, Ramsey, Wilshere
ST: Adebayor, Van Persie, Eduardo, Walcott, Bendtner, Vela
also Marleen: how can u say bendtners better than van persie, do u watch football????? although i do rate bendtner highly, you should watch him on youtube for the reserves… fuckin immense
Dave - January 6th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
No way, Nicklas Bendtner should never go to west ham.
I wouldn’t mind if West ham swapped James collins and bought carlos vela or eduardo. They wouldn’t be bad signings.
kennedy 1 - January 6th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
