Liverpool line up INTELLIGENT £3m BARGAIN Buy: Good Squad player?
by Mr Comfort on January 6th, 2009 63 commentsAll is well at the Merseyside outfit and at most the club needs a squad player or two in the transfer window and with that in mind this source outlines this Spaniard as on Rafa’s radar.
Claim your FREE bet right now!
Rafael Benitez has made a number of raids on his native Spain since leaving Valencia for Anfield in the summer of 2004, with the likes of Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Albert Riera becoming key men.
And The People report that the Spaniard is again lining up a move on La Liga this month, with his target said to be the relatively unknown Deportivo La Coruna winger Angel Lafita.
The 24-year-old is able to play on either flank and although he is a big part of Depor’s side, the Riazor club are believed to be willing to let him move on if an offer of £3million is received. (fansfc.com)
Rafa has already pointed out that he doesn’t expect any big signings in this transfer window so a move for this impressive in form winger could be a very possible foray into the market for the table toppers. Lafita is supposed to be a very impressive prospect who has come to the fore this term with some sterling performances at Deportivo, who he enjoyed a season long loan at last term. He is now considered as close to be called up for the international set up and would surely welcome a move to join the plethora of fellow countrymen at Anfield. Who do Liverpool fans think the club should spend their money on in January?

i think we ahould buy him because he is cheaper and better. lennon is too expensive for me.
lfc4life - January 7th, 2009 at 12:20 am
this would be a quality signing at this knockdown price. I’ve seen a bit of him and he can take people on, cross well and play right left and centre. He’s also in a rich vein of scoring in recent times for deportivo. I normally don’t pay much attention to mr comfort’s posts (no offence!!) ha ha, but I’ve heard this from three different sources now although rafa says there will be no signings he always keeps the cards close. With babel’s inconsistency and kuyt not being a natural wide player i think that this could be good. Dubious about reira arriving, not so much about this one. 3m bargain

Well i dnt think so tat this guys is a gr8 prospect for us…as i haven sen him playin yet…
but if he is said to b a quality player n cheap than y not!!!!

i have never seen this guy so cant comment, but i think lennon should never come to anfield he is terrible. he has a pace, but no skill only flashes and cannot cross the ball at all, he would give the ball away way too much
Put babel on right for 5 games straight and you will see what a good right winger he is

I havent seen him but from wat i have heard this guy is class.
And 2 you Mr Benitez i say why not
could be the next ronaldo ahaha i wish
he wud come at a bargain,, just giv him a go
Steve McMahon - January 7th, 2009 at 10:44 am
As like most of ye I havent seen him play, all I have seen is about 5 mins on utube, which portray’s him as a descent player, although for the price you cant really complain but once again is he another poor mans Yossi, why has no one snapped him up already if he is a good player?
9torres - January 7th, 2009 at 10:49 am
I think Riera was viewed in the same light before we signed him and he has been excellent, and proved to be just what we needed. Something similar but a right footed version would surely only add to the strength of our squad? Especially if we could get rid of Benayoun and replce him with Lafita?
Anyone heard of any concrete transfer targets?
9torres - January 7th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Chris Eagles? Really impressed for Burnley in the cup.
Steve McMahon - January 7th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Yeah, he did, he looked the most tallented player on the field, tricky, neat footballer, might be worth considering as a squad player for a start, few reserve games, and see what happens, what do you reckon.?
9torres - January 7th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
A bit lightweight and his hair is awful, played for united as well…
He has some pace and craft, he’s English, i think he would be worth a shout, would only be around £3million as well (if that). He has undoubted talent, can cross a ball and take a decent free kick. I’d give it a go.

A happy new year to you Steve McMahon. Hope you had a great X-mas mate….. Greeting 9torres, and to all……. Well you know my felllings when it comes to us buying bargin players. ( and for those who do not) We sdhould keep the money and only buy when we can buy class…… We have so much talent of the “future”, and guest what??…… The future is here now….. I think that we should be cutting lose the dead wood not strapping more on……..
Dave - January 7th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
I can only see us signing anyone if we sell first (Vornin, Pennant or Leto). If that is the case we will have a limited budget but would prefer the Polish bloke (Kuba, not even going to try spelling his surname) playing in Germany. He’s quick, strong can cross a ball and I think we would fit in with both our style and the Prem. However suspect that we will not sell our dross and Leto ( a decent player who can’t get a work permit) and therefore we will not buy anyone.
sam - January 7th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
I reckon that lafita may be a decent signing. for 3 million it is not too much money to waste if he ends up being a flop whereas kuba is almost 5 times as much and doesnt look very promising

(totally off the point) has anyone noticed how aaron lennon runs like a girl
slicky4 - January 8th, 2009 at 2:14 am
im from Burnley but are LIVERPOOL through and through…….. Eagles never really made it at manure and were quite happy to offload him when the right price came in…… i see him as another Pennant…. impressing at (sorry my hometown) at a lower level but would think he was the bee’s knee’s at a top club without really giving any contribution…..
slicky4 - January 8th, 2009 at 3:11 am
“QUOTE DAVE” its a shame about LETO, from all the pre-season games ive seen him play and the odd times at 1st team level ive always thought the potential is there, just like ive had with INSUA…….. INSUA has bulked up and got his chance, shame he’s away for a month….. either Aurelio will come in or Arbeloa will play there……. as nearly everyone on here i haven’t seen this ANGEL LAFITA play…. NOW do we get him on the off chance he’s going to be a star or are we just lookin for quick fixes in a troublesome position????? REMEMBER alot of teams panic buy in january to either stave off relegation or bolster for a european place……LIVERPOOL F.C. are in a position they haven’t been in for along while…. goin into the 2nd half of the season 3pts clear at the TOP of the league and looking strong in europe….. WITHOUT Torres, Skrtel, ok Aurelio…..now the next weekend of football is vital…. LIVERPOOL away to stoke…. manure at home to chelski….. WE MUST BEAT STOKE!!!!!!!!! and the best result of the other game a draw….. that would put us 5pts clear…. a chelski win would surrender our no1 status BUT they’ve to come to ANFIELD..(if we slip up at stoke)..a manure win still leaves them behind wiv the games in hand….. But its better to hav the points on the board than to rely on them to get u up there( even tho there both at old trafford against wigan n fulham)….. now fergie n arsene r complainin bout the fixture list????????????? doesnt make sense the 2nd half of the season suits em with the home games they so dearly missed in the 1st half of the season……. have the mind games begun already????? arsenal aren’t goin to win the league but they can do some damage in makin us champions……RAFA has to be shrewd in january….. if he feels he doesn’t need anyone then trust him….. if he buys a couple of cheap players to fill gaps, trust him…. if anything he’ll offload a few players…. keep the profits and strengthen in the summer……..RAFA’s a tactician to adapt and overcome any formation or tactics placed before him with the resources at hand………thats why he has the job and we don’t……….. in RAFA i trust….. YNWA
mark - January 8th, 2009 at 4:01 am
like slicky4 just said it’s vital that we beat stoke this weekend but it’ll be a difficult game, as for the chelsea and united game , i’m hoping for a chelsea win because i really feel united are our biggest threats, chelsea seem to be all over the place at the moment, but i just ope theycan get up for that game and beat united. as for lafita i’ve never heard of him, never mind seen him play, i’d prefer to sell the deadwood then save up the money and splash it on a class player in the summer

john – i totally agree david silva is awesome and it would be worth the money to sign him.
coggin - January 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Guys, I would be pleased but very surprised to see us go out and buy Silva but I can see 3 mill being spent on Lafita, I just hope that Rafa has seen more than 5 minutes of him on you tube. We don’t want a player like Ali Dia!!!
QWERTY - January 8th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
yeah, david silva would be good but i cant see he joining us as he said he would like a move to barca. Lafita seems like the best choice but we do need someone like fernando cavenaghi or zaki upfront to replace keane and torres if they get injured and it would be good if he could play with keane and torres to help bang in the goals.

Morning Sir Bob, I have never really been a great fan of Babel’s, as I have mentioned in previous post’s, there is something missing from Babel’s game, or there is something wrong between him and the manager, whichever it is im not sure, but you are more than likely referring to our mini discussion before xmas which was when you more or less said that you would prefer to keep Keane and sell Babel. I personally have no great affection for either player, but giving a choice between the two I would keep Babel. He is young, has great potential, strong and is very quick, none of these attributes can be said for Keane.
But yes I would sell Babel for the right price and not loose any sleep over it as he is not one of Raffa’s pet’s, so unless things change dramatically he will more than likely be sold by Raffa.

A happy new year to you Steve McMahon.
Likewise Donavan,
With regards to you post I fully agree, but and it’s a big but, if for the last time (e.g. this transfer window) we can pick up a bargain that could mean those extra 3,6 or however many points, then personally I would be all for it if it helps us winning the league.
And yes as I have mentioned before, sell a load of waste and buy quality players but unless we manage to sell a couple of players to raise cash in this window and soon, then I cant see us been able to afford any well known quality players.
Now would be agood time for our scout’s to come good and come up with a descent player.

Steve McMahon – January 9th, 2009 at 8:11 am
“Now would be agood time for our scout’s to come good and come up with a descent player.”
I think we all know what good players we would like to see in the club but it comes down to that money thing again and we don’t seem to have much, we could sell our lesser players but I can’t see Rafa selling many if any this window, we need them in case of injuries, maybe a purchase of a couple of million on Lafita but the major transfer will be in the summer of course.
You never know though, maybe Rafa does have a player in mind, we wait and see
9torres - January 9th, 2009 at 9:18 am
If you think about it rationally, we don’t have much money, so whoever Benitez does want, he won’t want to be involved in a bidding war of any sorts. He will not admit to having any targets as it would result in him not having a chance of affording them.
I think selling Benayoun and bringing in a young tricky winger would be a good idea, or even an older winger. Yossi is always unpredictable and a wildcard at best.
coggin - January 9th, 2009 at 10:58 am
9torres – January 9th, 2009 at 9:18 am
Not sure who would be joining us in the bidding war though, Manu said they are done for the window, chelsea don’t want to spend anything without selling first (roman say’s) Man city have the money but who really wants to go there and then Real Madrid will not let Ramos buy too much as he may be out again come the summer. Still as you say Rafa may have his eye on someone and doesn’t want to let it out yet.
What’s you prediction for the Stoke game. I would say 0-3
9torres - January 9th, 2009 at 11:03 am
i guess not, maybe unsettling the squad is another aspect that he is trying to avoid?
I think Stoke will score from a set play but Liverpool will win over the 90min possibly 1-2. Although i would love to see an easy 0-3 victory.
3 points and no injuries is what i’m hoping for.

Yes but the one thing that I believe that is holding us back big style and what makes us sweat more than we should is the lack of a bloke of natural goalscoring tallent to put the god dam ball in the back of the net aside from Torres, and of all the strikers in the world Heskey is not the answer. Mark my words you and others will be writing comments about Heskey, missing sitters, not holding the ball up, ending his time on the field when things are not going right for him with his usuall limping / ankle injury.
I have spoke to Wigan fans who are watching him week in week out and they cant believe we are even considering him, they are delighted, most have said that apart from the couple of good outings for England this year, he has done sweet F.A.
He scored 39 goals in 159 app while he was with us, 1 goal every 4 games or so, we only have 18 league games left, so he will probably get us 4 to 5 goals, maybe.
Also what system is Raffa going to play if he gets Heskey? He cant play a 4 2 3 1 system with Heskey, surely not? But can you see Raffa now changing the system if he gets Heskey?
Would you be happy with Heskey heading a 4 2 3 1 system? I wouldnt. I know money is tight but Jesus, not Heskey. I just hope Heskey is a smoke screen for some other player Raffa has in mind.

Imagine 4-2-3-1 with:
Reina
Carragher Skrtel Agger Insua
Mascherano Alonso
Gerrard Torres Babel
Heskey
Steve McMahon - January 9th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Personally I would still rather have Torres finishing than Heskey, which would you prefer,
Gerrard feeding Torres
or
Torres feeding Heskey,
To be honest i’d rather have Ngog up front than Heskey, as the have the same attributes only in my opinion Ngog is better as he is younger, fitter, faster and is more skillful.
I think we would be having fairly heated discussions on this site after watching Torres laying on a plate to Heskey 4,5, or even 6 good goalscoring chances and ? you can imagine the rest. I would’nt move Torres from the front line to accomodate Heskey in a million years, backwards move bigstyle, we would be fairly sick come next may, everyone would be calling for Raffa’s head on a plate for certain.
Imagine Raffa try and explain why he moved a striker who scored 33 goals last season further away from the goals and replaced him with someone as lethal as HESKEY. Now that would take some explaining if we lost the league due to this move.

Kuyt Torres Gerrard?
9torres - January 9th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Or swap gerrard and alonso’s positions and bring kuyt in for alonso
9torres - January 9th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
It’s all about options i suppose and that’s what benitez wants. If heskey signed he would play the same role as crouch did and prorbably get similar playing time.
Steve McMahon - January 9th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Sir Bob and 9torres, would ye honestly take Torres away from been the main striker in a 4 2 3 1 attack and replace him with Heskey.?
9torres - January 9th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Hell no, but he would have to play Torres off Heskey and not the other way round as Heskey doesn’t have the goal scoring ability, pace or trickery of Torres. It would have to switch to a 4-2-2-2 but with Torres allowed to roam.
I’m still of the opinion that we don’t need Heskey. Zaki can do the holding up of the ball the Heskey can, but he can finish too so he would seem like a more influential option.
Steve McMahon - January 9th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Phew, I thought you were smoking the funny stuff there for a while, or you were having a breakdown, glad to hear you havent.
I just dont see the benefical difference in buying Heskey when Ngog has the same and better attributes, so I personally cant see any reason to buy Heskey. He is slower than before, his scoring hasnt improved, therefore I just fail to see the benefit in buying him. And between Zaki and Heskey, Zaki wins hands down in my eyes as well.
If Raffa plays a 4 2 3 1 system then I woild like to see,
Reina
Carra, Agger, Skyrtel, Insua
Masch, Alonso
Babel, Gerrard, Reira
Torres
However as I have mentioned before in previous post’s, personally I would like to see us play a 3 4 3 system against so called lesser teams,
Reina
Carra, Skyrtel, Insua
Babel, Gerrard, (Masch/ Alonso), Reira
Kuyt Torres ( Keane / Ngog / Nemeth)
Subs, El Zhar, Agger, (2 of the 3 forwards in brackets) Hypia, Adam Hammill, Arbolea, etc
9torres - January 9th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Completely agree with those formations, could only see the 3-4-3 being employed if we were chasing a game though matey.
Have a nice weekend y’all!

Jesus Navas anyone? Young, fast, natural wideman, would fit in with the spanish core of our team so wouldn’t have much in the way of language problems so therefore would settle in fast, and wouldn’t necessarily be expensive? I’d like to see him in a red shirt wide right, seeing as the best natural wingers are unavailable; ribery, silva, robben etc. I still think we should have looked into quaresma, despite his inconsistency and attitude, i think carra and gerrard would keep him in line and he does have the ability to win games. And for the price inter paid for him, they got a good deal.

slicky4 – January 8th, 2009 at 3:11 am …”WE MUST BEAT STOKE!!!!!!!!!”…….. As you already know it was a draw with Stoke….. How the hell can anyone say that Rafa is among the top five managers in the world??? (Not saying that you said that slicky4, but someone here once said it)…, First of all he gets the choice of players wrong ( Lucas,Benayoun) and the positions of some of them wrong(Kuyt The lone front man) and then he fails the change it until to late, and then when he does, he takes off one of the players that would create the best chances. Riera…… How the hell can Rafa face the fans after such supidity on his part.,,, Ok, anyone can choose the wrong tactics, but after 30 minutes you could tell it was not working…… We had one header and one shot on goal and they (Stoke) were begining to get back into it., At worse he should have changed things at half time, replacing the woeful Benayoun with Bable, and the equally dire Lucas with Torres and gone with Babel out right, Torres up front Kuyt just off him and Gerrard making runs from midfield…… The game was there for the taking and Rafa throws it a way…….. I was just being to believe that we could win the Premier Leauge, but after this display i think that i was right when i said that we would finish third, but with the way Aston Villia are playing 4th or 5th might be a safer bet…… We need to get rid of ALL the dead wood this summer Lucas,Benayoun,Leto,Pennant, Ngog, Itandje and Benitez…. Both Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier would have fielded thier strongest team and made sure that they when a out to win this game given the position in the league and the fact the both Man Utd and Chelsea have to play one another Sunday and a draw looks the most likely result…… How many chances can Rafa throw away and still hope to win the Premier League???….. Do us all a favour next season Rafa and walk on…..

QWERTY - January 11th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
donavan reid – i agree benitez must know how important that game was and he is still playing crap players – i mean how many times does keane have to score before will start him every game – united have won and if they win there games in hand (which they will) then we will be 2 points behind – if we played our strongest team out every game then we could be top by quite a bit – the only reason rafa is useful is because it will keep torres at the club! I also think we need to sign a quality right wing back like bosingwa – he makes a big difference to chelsea’s side as he helps out in the attacks, gets in crosses and scores – we have nobody to do that and we end up playing players like benayoun, lucas and el zhar – cmon rafa… get a grip!!!
Anonymous - January 13th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
i didn catch the game just the result and was dismally disappointed, agrees with donovan that rafa is an idiot at times our best two results were when sami leee was in charge , rafa too cautious we are better than stoke we need to win play 442 with gerrard cetral with masch and keane and torres up front drop lucas to the bench for this one duh duh duh
next everton and we need to win this one or fergie and his mind games already have sunk our battleship
rafa wise up look at the players we have they have fantastic abilities give them some more freedom to win games and less of this tight controlled football
