Say it ain’t so! Arsenal agree a fee for Russian against the odds

This deal looked to be dead in the water just a few hours ago, with the player in question loitering around a London airport, waiting for a private jet to whisk him back to Russia. However, it now appears as though the Gunners have landed a player who could kickstart their flagging season, exciting stuff at the Emirates!

Andrei Arshavin is a name we all associate with Euro 2008, with the Zenit midfielder lighting up the tournament with some sublime skill. Although Arsenal were heavily linked to the player after Russia’s participation had ended, no deal could be struck that would bring him to the club. Indeed, Arshavin professed a desire to go to Barcelona at one stage, although his agent and club always appeared to be hyper-inflating the transfer fee. Now Sky Sports reports that a deal has been agreed, although surely something could still go wrong?!

15.48 At last Arsenal and Zenit St Petersburg have finally agreed a fee for the transfer of Andrei Arshavin to the Gunners. The deal is still to be finalised though with Arshavin and the Russians still to sort out a final payment. It is understood Arshavin will wear the number 13 shirt.

Arsenal fans, are you delighted by this news, or should the transfer have taken place in August rather than February? Surely this is exactly the sort of signing the team needs, especially as they seem to be so devoid of ideas when Fabregas is injured. Do you think Arshavin can help the Gunners land a place in the top four of the Premier League, or is it too little too late?
