How many points will Manchester United finish ahead of Liverpool this season?
by stresster on February 13th, 2009 25 commentsLiverpool have drawn too many league matches this season, something which will almost certainly come back to haunt them in May. They would be two points clear of Manchester United if they had won both matches against Stoke City instead of drawing them, thus meaning that a win at Old Trafford would put them in the driving seat.
Daniel Agger has bemoaned his side’s failure to have that killer instinct that their titles rivals certainly possess at the moment. Sky Sports reports that the Dane feels that Liverpool’s game at Old Trafford next month is a must-win due to the potential five-point deficit that could exist between the two teams after United play Fulham next week.
“I take my hat off to United. They have showed scary strength and have many strings to play on,” Agger told Ekstra Bladet.
“They are the most stable and they win the close games.
“If we want to keep our chances for the trophy alive we can’t draw in so many games,” added Agger.
“Manchester United could be five points ahead of us if they win next Wednesday’s game against Fulham.
“Because of that we will have to beat them at Old Trafford.”
Do Liverpool supporters feel confident of going to Manchester United and grabbing an all-important win? The Merseyside team finished eleven points behind their arch-rivals last season, but will hope to close the gap this time around and prove that they can compete for the title all the way to the line.

‘They would be two points clear of Manchester United if they had won both matches against Stoke City instead of drawing them’
A bit silly and pointless this line, in the same token, How many points clear would utd be better off by, if they hadn’t drawn to newcastle and spurs for example.

The castle grey skull game was always going to be the key game wether we had beat stoke or whoever we had drew with.
Why cant the media get off Liverpool back?It doesnt matter we are second and beaten once in the league and actually challenging for once for the likes of Sky/Setanta to keep passing snide remarks after ever game.
Would they do it to any other team?
Have Chelsea been slated after all the money they have spent and are 5 point behind?
Do the press slag Berbatov who at the time had scored the same amount of goals as Keane, but cost 10 mill more?
Could any other team cope with the loss of the likes of Skirtel, Gerrard and Torres for long periods of the season?
Get behind Liverpool and accept if not this year we are actually getting closer and maybe next year.

Yeah I agree with Paul- why is the media so intent to bash Liverpool? It’s getting pathetic and I have starting switching off the so called experts like Tim Sherwood who have never managed anything since his playing career ended.
This is the closest that Liverpool have ever been to a Premiership Title so get off their case … it’s getting old.

Killer instinct, haven’t Utd won 7 of the last 10 games 1-0 ????
Admittedley, LFC have struggled for goals in some games, however better to draw with Stoke & beat Man U & Chelsea than the other way around. Vast improvement this season, don’t believe the tabloid hacks.

Scouser in the States, well, that’s because most of those who write match reports are Manchester United faithful. I could still recall that to my mind the greatest Champions League Final that I’ve seen in my lifetime (that’s going back to the early 80s), I would rank Liverpool vs Milan in Instanbul as probably the greatest ever.
It’s wasn’t just a story about a miraculous comeback like no one ever seen. Coming back from three goals down by any standard is incredible but what made it even more amazing was a quite ordinary Liverpool side against the might Milan at their peak! It was a classic David vs Goliath story. What did many of the press do? They can’t even say on that night, Liverpool rose to the occasion and beat a brilliant Milan side or something to the effect that it was a super human effort like no one’s seen. Instead they would harped on the lucky Dudek reflective save. Or Alonso’s fortunate penalty rebound. Or that Sheva missed the spot kick. Shit…what do you expect Dudek to do? With a cross coming in and Sheva pounced on it, so Dudek is just to stand there and make it easy for the striker? Alonso is not supposed to tuck the shot in after a save by Dida? It’s Liverpool’s fault that Sheva missed his spot kick and Dudek not supposed to guess right in stopping it? It was just plain stupid. Yet i remembered how when the season Man Utd won the Champions League final against B.Munich in their treble winning season, the press were going on and on how great this side was.
The fact is if you are a neutral like me and analyze the match, Man U match was shite and crappy. Bayern ran rings around them. Sure, they didn’t have Scholes and Keane but still they were clearly out played. But that’s the beauty of football, playing well sometimes doesn’t guarantee wining. With 2 quick counter attacks in the last minute and dying seconds of the game, Man U scored 2 (which was the only 2 clear cut shooting chance they had in the entire match). Sure give them credit for fighting till the last minute and winning the cup but they weren’t superb that night. So don’t say the players played well because the Bayern’s player played much better.
The press started singing about how incredible this Man U side was against Bayern. I was thinking…that’s pure bullshit. I am not a Liverpool fan but I could recall the press slaughtered Liverpool’s performance when they beat Arsenal during Houllier’s regime in that 2-1 FA Cup final win. Arsenal dominated and Viera totally outplayed Gerrard but with too quick long balls and thanks to Owen’s speed at that time, he scored two well taken goals. The press then labeled Liverpool as lucky and I AGREE. Sure they won but with a lot of luck but so did Man U against Bayern in that final. Why not call Man U that too?
So i have given up reading much of the press reports and just like to watch the match myself and formulate my own conclusion. I suspect many of them writes simply to sell papers given the huge Man U fan base.

Wooopps….sorry. got distracted and strayed away from the main topic of discussion. I had to guess but I am surprised at Liverpool’s strength this season. Even if they don’t pip Man U this season to the title, I think they would be more ready next season.

I think that there is no way of telling. There are still more than 10 games to go, one with the two teams head to head. Man Utd has been winning games and keeping clean sheets lately, but that is no indication of what will be happening in 5 games time. Its not the done deal that the media is making out. As for Arsene, Guus and MON, they are dreaming. Obviously ManU are in the drivers seat, but time will tell.

they will be -1 behind. Liverpool beat spurs on the last day with a Robbie Keane own goal
He’s in deep cover at the moment

Time will tell.you could argue that l´pool should be x amouunt of points ahead especially as utd were away over the dec-jan period and l´pool had the lge games to win.and in fairness had they done their job, then we wouldn´t be having this debate.but the fact that they didn´t gave utd the chance to sneek past them.
now they find themselves 2 points behind and should utd win the game in hand and move 5 pts clear then it could(i did say could) knock the stuffin out of l´pool who really would only have themselves to blame.

The media is so liverpool bias its unbelievable.
It just shows how delusional some of you scousers are thinking that you could actually win the title. Its not the media its the common view that Liverpool simply aren’t good enough, just like us and Villa.
Georgiie - February 14th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
Man Utd dnt deserve to be 1st after losing to us and Arsenal. Watch them crumble against Fulham and LFC
dibbler - February 14th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
What do you think is good enough gooner lets face it even if we win the league we will be slated for something or other and we are 2nd at the moment is that a fake position or what i dont get all this shit with dickheads that listen to dickheads about liverpool no matter what you think as it stands we are the second best team in the league and no matter where you finnish that is where you deserve to be and at the end of the day GOONER your shit team are 10 points behind us and you so far are the fith best team in the league now if thats a fact am i lying?
dibbler - February 14th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
Oh and i think if we can stay with them untill we play them at the theatre of shit then i think we can beat them there and then we can maybe dare to dream

i think liverpool have a great chance to win it this year.looking at the fixture list us and united have an almost identical run in, i think the march 14 is the big one with us playing each other, but then the week after we have villa. i think these two weeks will be the defining point of our season.then both teams have arsenal, but i think both of us should be able to beat them. so basically i think it will come down to 3 games-
united vs liverpool
liverpool vs villa
united vs villa
whoever gets the best results out of them games will take the league.
JDM - February 15th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Its anyones title at the moment, UTD, LFC, and even Chelsea, are the main three. Arsenal need top four now, which i dont think they will get! so im bias towards LFC cos i support them. But even if we dont win atleast we challenged, and that was our objective, but our aim would be to win. which still is in much contention. all UTD need to do is lose once, vs LFC, and draw once against Arsenal! providing Liverpool keep winning!!!
So come LFC, we’ve completed our objective, lets thrash our aim!!!
The Ghost of Shanks - February 15th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Still a long way to go. I think the team with the most point at the end of the season will win, just my guess
shk - February 16th, 2009 at 8:54 am
Lets see did United win the league yet?Hell no.Sounds to me they won it already.Anyway maybe they know something us Scousers dont. All i can say United is great team with a great coach one must remember lfc is still fighting not over yet. United can still drop points.Even a great team will drop points.I have respect for them but what anoys me are their pathetic fans who forgot it took them 25/26 years to win the title and we are now 18 years without a title thats football Fergie came to their rescue and won it after 7 years in charge. There is a time for change and it has come and that makes these United fans very bitter and the fact that Fergie starting so early with his mind games says alot he feels threatened but dont tell a United fan that.May the best team win.
