Considering some of Chelsea’s poor recent performances home and away, it’s easy to forget that the Blues came out of the traps flying at the start of the season. Indeed, they were particularly strong on their travels, winning eight consecutive matches on the road before starting to stutter in early December.
Never has there been a more important time to get back to winning ways than at Villa Park on Saturday. While many have already written off Chelsea for the Premier League title, Clubcall reports that Frank Lampard believes that they can still topple Manchester United – providing they beat Aston Villa at the weekend.
“Aston Villa is massive because they are in front of us,” Lampard said in The Times.
“To still be in the chase we have to win the game. It is going to be tough but we have a lot of big players, a strong team and we can do it.”
Aston Villa have hardly been world-beaters at home this season, managing far more points on their travels than at Villa Park, where opposition defences have regularly stifled them. Chelsea will clearly not be going to the Midlands for a point, will Guus Hiddink play an attacking formation spearheaded by Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka for this must-win match? Do Blues supporters feel confident that they can get back to winning ways in the league?
