Give it a rest Arsene old chap. We understand that it must be frustrating to go from being Premiership champions to the fifth best team in the league, with the current starting XI looking like a very poor imitation of the side that won so much silverware under the management of Monsieur Wenger. However, this latest outburst is simply ridiculous!
Everyone knows the rules at the start of the season with regard to the eligibility of players in the Champions League. It was always going to be out of the question that having played for Zenit, Andrei Arshavin was not going to have the chance to form part of Arsenal’s European campaign. However, the Daily Mail reports that Wenger can’t fathom why the Russian shouldn’t be allowed to completely break the rules and play against Roma this week.
Wenger said: ‘I am frustrated because Arshavin played in a team that is out of the competition so the logic is not really obvious.
‘If he can play in the Premier League and the FA Cup, why not be qualified for us in the Champions League?
‘He has played for a team that cannot play any more in the Champions League and who now plays in the UEFA Cup.
‘It’s the rule so I guess we cannot complain too much because we knew that when we bought him.’
With or without Arshavin, it’s looking unlikely that Arsenal are going to make much of an impact in the Champions League this season, especially with key injuries to Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott. Do Gunners supporters think that the team can somehow have a successful European campaign, or will Roma prove too strong for them over the two legs.
