Mikel Arteta’s season-ending injury taught David Moyes a hard lesson that he’d rather not relive ever again. That lesson would of course be that you injuries are inevitable, and that sometimes it pays to have a big squad. That’s why they’re going after this big name.
Moyes didn’t realise, of course, that the injuries would be this bad. But he did sense that his squad was too small. He made it a point at the beginning of the to tell anyone that was listening that he needed more help. So with Arteta out and Moyes having to employ 17-year-old, Jack Rodwell, in the middle of the pitch, the Everton manager has finally figured that it’s time to bite the bullet and reignite their interest in Joao Moutinho once again.
Joao Moutinho has emerged as Everton’s top midfield target after it was confirmed that Mikel Arteta faces up to nine months out of action.
A scan revealed Arteta suffered cruciate ligament damage in the opening minutes of Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Newcastle and he was immediately ruled out for the rest of the season.
Goodison insiders fear he will miss the start of next season as well and as a result boss David Moyes has stepped up his long-term interest in Moutinho. (Daily Mail)
The Sporting midfielder has been very keen on a move to the Premier League for some time. At 22 years of age, he’s nearing the prime of his career that could see him improve if he moved abroad to a higher level of competition. Moyes even sent scouts to his recent match against Benfica.
Everton were on the verge of signing him late last season before Sporting squashed the £11.8m offer. Sources now say Sporting would be willing to part for the midfielder for somewhere in the range of £13m.
What do Everton supporters think? Is Moutinho worth the money?
