Is Rafa questioning his decision to let Liverpool’s skipper play against Real Madrid?
by offsidetrap on February 24th, 2009 250 words | 8 commentsLike a card player holding his cards to his chest, Liverpoool manager Rafa Benitez has been very coy when commenting on Steven Gerrard’s fitness level prior to the match on Wednesday against Real Madrid.
Whilst he has made it clear that Gerrard will feature in the match, Benitez has not yet made it known if the Liverpool skipper will be in the starting XI or on the bench.
“Steven will be in the squad,” Benitez said. “He was okay in training this morning. It was a special training session so we were not testing him 100%, but he trained okay so we will see.”
In the past, this sort of thing would have been a foregone conclusion. Benitez would have risked his star player due to the fact that the club was usually out of the league race by that point. Champions League football was the only thing on his mind. But with Liverpool sitting in second place seven points back, Liverpool supporters have to wonder if the pressure to perform is causing Benitez to risk Gerrard ahead of schedule. If he does feature and Liverpool get a positive result Benitez looks like a god; but if he features, re-injures the hamstring and Liverpool fall flat, then he looks like he’s pressing too hard. It’s a tough spot for the manager.
What do Liverpool supporters think? Should Gerrard be in the starting XI or on the bench on Wednesday night?

i will be very suprised if gerrard starts on wednesday night, i think he’ll come on later in the game if we need him but if we lead 1-0 or even better 2-0 then he will be left sitting on the bench obviously.

If he’s fit he should play, if he’s not then let lucas play the central attacking midfielder role. With Alonso and Mascherano we have a solid defensive core, so Lucas can be allowed to show the passing skills that Rafa raves about.
Reina
Arbeloa Carra Skrtel Aurelio
Mascherano Alonso
Kuyt Lucas Riera
Torres
Subs: Cavalieri, Gerrard, Kelly, Spearing, Hyypia, Benayoun, Babel.

Lucas, play in the CAM,? The lad is a liability, I would rather see Yossi than Lucas play in CAM. He can’t tackle, his passing is poor, and personally he shouldn’t even be in the squad let alone the team.
Question!, Why of all the games this season should Lucas now be put in a CAM role against Real Madrid at this stage of the champions league?
Possible line up’s without Lucas the Albanian, (He is not from Brazil)?
Reina
Arbeloa Carra Skrtel Aurelio
Mascherano Alonso
Kuyt Yossi Riera
Torres
or
Reina
Arbeloa Carra Skrtel Aurelio
Mascherano Alonso
Kuyt Riera Babel
Torres
Riera is always cutting in from the left to a more central position, so try him in the CAM role, he has much more ability than Lucas. Also by playingt Babel (with his pace) we will give the RM defence a little more to think about than just Torres.

Steve i must agrree with your comment. Yossi has to start if Gerrard doesn’t please don’t play the useless Lucas

That is his position, he just never gets to play in it as we have Gerrard ahead of him and Benayoun and Babel cannot play the defensive role, which is what he usually gets. Obviously you are more than likely going to be right with your line-ups, it’s just something i would like to see Rafa try. He played a similar position against Newcastle and was immense.
