Jose Mourinho’s team made a fool of their manager with a lacklustre performance against Manchester United on Tuesday night, now ‘the special one’ has made himself look an even bigger idiot with his comments about the referee at the San Siro.
While most people are in agreement that Luis Medina Cantalejo did a decent job, The Guardian reports that the Inter manager truly seems to believe that the ref was on the visitors’ side. Never mind that the Italian champions were outplayed for most of the match, Jose is just glad there will be another arbiter in charge of the game at Old Trafford.
“When we go there [to Old Trafford] we will not have the same referee,” Mourinho said. “If we have another referee it gives so much protection to the away team, then it will be us who go to the quarter-finals. Hopefully in the next game the referee will be on our side.”
It was a classic Mourinho outburst, one that drew a withering response from Ferguson. “Seriously?” the United manager exclaimed after being informed of Mourinho’s comments. “I thought we saw a marvellous performance from the referee. He wasn’t intimidated and that’s what Mourinho means when he says he was disappointed. He was hoping to get a referee who would come here and be intimidated. But this referee wasn’t intimidated at all. I thought he was first-class.”
Ultimately, Inter were lucky to come away with a goalless draw after a strangely subdued performance, where they created few chances of note. Manchester United supporters must be a little disappointed that their team failed to score during Tuesday night’s game, with a priceless away goal no more than they deserved. Does anyone agree that the referee favoured the visitors?
