Judgement day is upon Liverpool, as the club prepares to take centre stage tonight against Real Madrid in one of the most intriguing Champions League clashes to date. Aside from the head-to-head competition on the pitch, the rumours swirling about regarding Gerrard’s injury could be the next biggest side story of them all. But even with the skipper’s status in limbo, Jamie Carragher has come out and proclaimed that the team can make it through to the next round without Stevie G.
‘We can get a good result without Steven,’ said the centre-half. ‘We have done it in the past, he is a great player — one of the best in the world — and we hope he will be fit. But when we won the trophy in 2005 there were plenty of games when Steven didn’t play.’ (Daily Mail)
Carragher has always been one of Liverpool’s biggest rocks in times of great chaos. The club does have a knack for making the most out of a bad situation, but their recent run of results without their skipper, coupled with the news of Rafa’s possible departure most likely have Liverpool supporters sitting on pins and needles.
Even without Gerrard, Liverpool do have to look on the positive side: at least they have Fernando Torres at their disposal against the one club he’d love to beat more than any other. One can only hope he’s enough if Gerrard can’t go tonight.
What do Liverpool supporters think? Can Liverpool get a positive result against Real Madrid without Steven Gerrard?
