Liverpool are ONCE AGAIN the BEST football club in the world!
by offsidetrap on February 26th, 2009 42 commentsOr at least that’s what the UEFA rankings are saying, after Liverpool moved back into the top spot ahead of Chelsea. The new rankings are based on results and the quality of your opponent in European competition over the last five seasons.
Considering Liverpool won the competition back in 2005, made it to the final two years ago, and then made it to the semi-final last year, this shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. Most would agree that whilst Rafa Benitez isn’t in his element when it comes to the league, he’s probably the best manager in the world when it comes to Europe’s biggest stage.
UEFA Rankings
1 Liverpool FC (114.077)
2 Chelsea FC (110.077)
3 Barcelona (109.403)
4 AC Milan (109.306)
5 Arsenal (101.077)
6 Sevilla (100.403)
7 Man Utd (99.077)
8 Bayern Munich (93.664)
9 Lyon (90.576)
10 Inter Milan (87.306)
Whilst Liverpool are the best based on their current ranking, we want to know if there’s another club out there that’s better than Rafa’s men when it comes to European nights? Let us know in the comment box below.

Never seen anything so ridiculous in all my life.
JDM - February 27th, 2009 at 2:18 am
Well Jay2409, its fact, and we will prove it this season! Come on you Reds! This year is ours!
Andrew - February 27th, 2009 at 3:18 am
Well according to these sevilla is beter then man utd. so i guess these arnt facts and what has aresnal done in the champions league other then 1 final? man utd are still the best team in the world. the rankings are down for man ud coz of the shocker in 2005 and 2006. but hey we will see. undefeated in 20 european games won 19 our the last 21 games only 2 losses since october.
unbeliverpool - February 27th, 2009 at 3:39 am
serie A: inter, checked. ac milan, checked. juventus, checked.
primera liga: barcelona, checked. real madrid, checked.
bpl: chelsea, checked. arsenal, checked.
we’ve basically conquered every top team in europe now haven’t we. okay except the french clubs and the bundesliga clubs. and the mancs.
rich - February 27th, 2009 at 8:05 am
yeah we beat top teams which means hull city, west ham, and the mighty stoke city must be in class of there own considering we can’t beat them or can’t benitez motivate his players for these games
9torres - February 27th, 2009 at 8:48 am
More proof we need to keep hold of Benitez in my eyes
Jools - February 27th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Andrew….it’s a very simple concept that you haven’t grasped. The rankings don’t say Sevilla are better than Utd. They say that Sevilla have a better record in Europe over the last 5 years than Utd. Stop sulking and understand….Liverpool have the best record in Europe by a long chalk.

Rick Parry to leave LFC today

Jools well if that is the case then why is the tittle of this thread called liverpool once again the BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD when they are clearly not

Nice. But i’m a bit concerned me self about the Seville Man U thing. But Once again we’re top of the world! Now lets prove it in the League and finish Real off at Anfield.
Also with Rick Parry leaving, could this be a hint of not only Rafa, but the dreaded Yanks as well? I hope so.

I doubt anyone looking to buy the club would want both the CEO and manager gone, this would be total turmoil and Rafa is still a top manager, we just need the money to buy top players and hope that Rafa plays a wee bit more attacking, look where we are again, high in the league just beaten Real Madrid and now biggest club in Europe
mark - February 27th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
the way i read it, the yanks sound like they’re staying for the long term. but at least we’ve got rid of parry. as for the champions league stats only andrew is silly enough to argue that the reds haven’t been the best team in the champions league in the past 5 years, andrew you also shot yourself in the foot by saying this;’ the rankings are down for man ud coz of the shocker in 2005 and 2006.’ well that’s the point andrew- it’s calculating the teams performances in the last 5 years. (that includes 2005 and 2006)
redfan - February 27th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
It is good to be at top of league than in rating …. how did uefa rate…..in previous season achivement and this season form don’t want to say man u is best team…n is team to beat
calvo - February 27th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
stats dont lie thats true but neither does the lge table!the fact that l´pool are top of this “lge”means nothing to be fair apart from bragging rights.great if your into those things.
another comforting but useless stat that gives no indication of where the cpl will be heading is that utd have gone 20 unbeaten.
again wow but unless utd win the damn thing thats another for you stat-mongers to chew over.
bragging rights are 1 thing but I´d rather see my team holding the trophies, that will tell me what we have done.
dongo - February 28th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
i think man utd will fall short on all the cups this year spurs will beat then tomorrow, the only thing they’r favourite 4 is the prem
Donavan Ried - March 1st, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Hello,9Torres, and calvo,
It is the day after the Middlesbrough game, and after watch this game four times I still do not know what to make of it……., As many here know I am not the greatest fan of Rafa, but I like to think that i am fair in my comments of him and Liverpool Fc, so here goes……… After the first time of watch it my thoughts were it was just one of those games where we tried and was not lucky on the day, we played well, made chances and did not put them away, simple as……….The second time I studied it abit closer, and came to near enough the same conclution as the fisrt time that i wacth it, with the exsepction of that I felt the players could have tried harder and been more inventive, Rafa was not at fault here……… Then I watched it a third time,Martin Skrtel in the right back position??, no Arbeloa, maybe he picked up a knock, but why not play Jamie Carragher there instead???…… This is begining to look like yet another bad choice by Rafa………. After the four time, man….. Have I been wrong about Rafa?…… I mean is he smarter than I have been giving him credit for?……… Did he field a weakened side think, “If I win this the fans will still be behind me, and If I lose this then I will be able to concentrate on the Champions League and field a strong side against Real, beat them and the fans will love me”……….
Some of you out there believe that we are where we are because Rafa was not allowed to buy players, But I will point out that this was only the case since he tried to buy Garth Barry and wanted to spend way over the top for him…….. Now that Parry is going, how is it that Rafa wants written into his new concract that if the club changes hands that he will be allowed to leave????? ……… Has he suddenly become great friends with Hicks and Gillette that he cannot bair to be at Liverpool without them?………, or Does he know that if a new owner comes in that they will not put up with his antics, and is therefor laying the grounds for his departure already?………
To quote Mark……..mark – February 24th, 2009 at 6:18 am …………..
“A successful team can’t be built in a few games,so all the ones saying get rid of rafa are wrong- the manager we replace him with will build his squad, starting all over again, meaning we’d take major steps back just because a few narrow minded fans say rafa is this or rafa is that. the fact is he’s made us a better team he’s the reason why torres, reina.riera, mash, the list goes on are at liverpool-to work with him and be at a club like liverpool.”…………. Does this mean that we should put up with Rafa and no Premier League titles for the next 18 years just becuase he bought “Torres,Reina.Riera,Mash’ ” to the club?…. or should we bring in a new manager that will give us a real chance to win the Premier League because it means as much to the manager as it does the fans?….. and besides who is to say that would mean losing the likes of Torres,Reina.Riera, and Mash’ anyway?…… I think any manager coming into Liverpool wouild have a good look around before he decides who he want and who he will let go……… We have gotten Rid of one person that has held the club back of all these years, Mr Rick Parry,……Let us take the next step and get rid of Rafa….. Change is sometime frightening, but after 5 years Rafa and no Premier League Title, Come on what would you choose.

“Never seen anything so ridiculous in all my life.”
Try looking in the mirror!
If there is a league made up with the likes of Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Juventus, AC MIlan, Inter, Barcelona, Real Madrid, etc…Liverpool would be champions.
If there is a league made up with the likes of Stoke, Boro, Wigan, Spurs, etc…Liverpool might be relegated!
DOWNUNDER - March 1st, 2009 at 10:48 pm
On the bigger scheme of things, I think the times have moved on with many Liverpool supporters kind of still living in the past. To them the EPL crown is the number one priority but to most of Europe, the Champions League crown is the most coveted prize of all. The rationale is simple because you can’t beat being called the champions of Europe.
Liverpool have consistently performed well in the CL which made them a team to be feared throughout Europe. That tribute and honour ought to go to Benitez. He is very clever in his approach to the different games in Europe. For that, I think his reign in Liverpool has been quite good.
What’s lacking for the moment is success in the EPL. What appears to me that Liverpool needs are players who are more than ‘potential’ but proven world class like Mascherano, Reina, Gerrard, Torres, Alonso. Next is the question of money. That’s where Liverpool needs to remarket itself globally just as what Real Madrid, Man U, Arsenal are doing and with much success. The stadium is a great visionary project but that can wait. You can have a great stadium but if you don’t have great players, you can bet it’s not going to fill up. Of course ideally, it would be perfect if both projects can proceed with full steam ahead together but in this economic climate, it is probably not prudent. So players come first because you need them to have on field success.
Then it’s considering who would take Liverpool to the next level. I think clearly Liverpool may need some great ‘creative’ players in the mold of Pablo Aimar, Zola or Berkamp. Liverpool’s central midfield is complete but you need someone better than Lucas. He is not a reliable deputy once Alonso, Mascherano or Gerrard is unavailable. You need a world class, effective right winger. You also need another striker. Ngog, Zhar are not bad but clearly not reliable enough to tuck the ball in when the pressure is on. In other words, their lack of experience and class showing. Babel is good but he really needs to get his head and act together in order to step up! Meanwhile stick with Benitez for 2 more seasons. It sounds silly especially after another loss to Boro. Hastily appoint someone new doesn’t guarantee success. Just look at Newcastle, Spurs, R Madrid to name a few examples.
My 2 cents worth.

Well, we do not need the facts to speak anymore…just look at the status quo and one could say which is the best team in the word ..
Trashing Real Madrid away and at home,
Trashing Man Uni away and winning them at home(in both the cases, it was a comeback)
Winning Chelsea both away and at home…
Looking at the scorelines above, one can perfectly deduce that it is Liverpool and none other than Liverpool.
Just come to your senses and look at the teams that they trashed…only the world’s best will be able to pull this kind of thing off..
(To all supporters of the rivals, do not be embarrassed to lose to the best)
Macca - March 21st, 2009 at 6:13 pm
Liverpool are the best team in the world, I totally agree, and its looking better in the league with Manchester Utd losing Fulham 2-0 today, giving liverpool another shot at snapping that title off them
milan - March 22nd, 2009 at 2:27 pm
ac milan have achieved way more than liverpool in this competition so funny how liverpool r the best
THUVEN - March 24th, 2009 at 3:09 am
open your eyes…look closely…
this ranking is based on 5 years achievements…
AC Milan only made it twice to the final…
Liverpool also made twice to the finals…
but without failure to book a place in the quarters..unlike milan or manchester united

wow u have played a few good games and you think youre the best? try doing this every game without failure like united has for the past couple of seasons, UTD undoubtly is the worlds best team (i am a barcelona supporter) if you think liverpool is better then think again, You look at liverpools goals and see if vidic performed like he has EVERY OTHER game his played in, no way would liverpool score against them, AND liverpool have been charged with match fixing by UEFA soooo its going to be lol, im not suprised either, 6 penalties in 3 games is a bit iffy
Macca - March 26th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Haha you fool, I believe with the way liverpool are playing at the moment they can take on any team in the world. They have beaten alot of the top teams this year and thrashed a few of them. Don’t look at the bloody facts!!! if you was to look at the facts you would see liverpool are more succesfull than Man Utd altogether in their history’s. But I’m not looking at the facts, I’m looking at the way a certain football team is playing at the moment, and they are playing beautifully, they are magnificent to watch and so tactically aware and simply outplaying other teams. give them credit for the way they are playing.
Luka - March 26th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
i beilive that liverpool are the most inconsistant team ever. loose 2-0 to middlesborugh then win 4-0 against real madrid :O? but atm they are playing very well. but most of the goals are coming from another teams mistakes if you actually watch the games ull also notice that to. and alot of penalties given to them.
Macca - March 26th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Donavan Ried, you say Liverpool need a change of manager as after 5 years Rafa still hasn’t won us the premier league, so tell me just how long it took Sir Alex ferguson to win his first title at Manchester Utd? 7 years I believe, Rafa is a good manager and things are really starting to come together for him now I think
Macca - March 26th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Yes some teams may have slipped up allowing LFC to get the goals in luka, but so have Man Utd and chelsea it apart of the game you seem to be missing the part where Liverpool take full advantage of it and come down hard on the team and don’t let them breathe, out classing them in play and making the other team having to fight. thats what I have noticed. Liverpool have played well this season and have had 1 or 2 slips as you have stated with the loss against Boro, but then the same for Man Utd they have played well but at the moment they have slipped with a thrashing from LFC then a 2-0 defeat from fulham, wow what an exciting title race!!!

What i was in fact saying was that for 4 plus years under Rafa there as been no attemp by him to even challenge for the Premier League. The Champions League as always been upmost in Rafa’s mind, and now he needs a new contract, the Premier League is important?….. Just watch if we lose the first leg to Chelsea you can look forward to a weakened team for the next Premier League game, that for sure.
Macca - March 28th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Do you not think that Rafa realised we didn’t have the squad to put up a fighting chance over the previous four years but because of the passion and his tactical nous stood a chance in the CL? All we needed to do in the league was ensure we qualified for the CL. By progressing well over the last four years he has brought in vital revenue and also improved the status of LFC in Europe back to where we should be. This enables us to recruit better youth players and improve our squad (as we have seen), allowing us to mount a serious charge on the league. When Rafa signed first time he said he wanted to be here for 10 years or more, because he realised our squad was nowhere near capable of winning the things expected by the fans. This is why we have a professional manager at the helm and not fans, who may have the passion but obviously lack the patience! It takes time to build a championship winning team.

9torres – March 30th, 2009 at 7:24 am ……”Do you not think that Rafa realised we didn’t have the squad to put up a fighting chance over the previous four years” No I put it down to more of a lack of trying on his part. Even if we did not have the team to do it, It is Rafa’s duty to try and win it, not just to plod along and only put in a real effort when he needs to surcure forth place for the Champions League, that’s what get me.
9torres - April 2nd, 2009 at 7:22 am
There is no way a manager takes over a club and doesn’t try though. He just played to his strengths until we were in a position to achieve our aims. There is no way we could have won the league in previous seasons without the cohesion and belief that our CL exploits have generated.
