Liverpool’s most recent away loss to Middlesbrough has their manager on red alert. With the title slipping away at the most inopportune time, Rafa Benitez figures that it’s time for his club to hear their harshest words of all: his club lacks a ruthless edge.
“Yes, this is a bad result, clearly it is a bad result,” he said. “We can analyse the game and what happened at the end, but if you look at the first 30 minutes we were in control.
“We have had lots of chances to score in games like this and this was the same. In the first half we were doing well and were in control, but we had to score.
“How do you make a team ruthless? These things they learn with time. You can learn to be ruthless, but something like that takes time.” (Liverpool Echo)
Just like in years past, Liverpool have once again found it difficult to put away clubs sitting on the south side of the Premier League table. There’s no excuse for not getting up for a match when the opponent isn’t on your level; you have to play with a ruthless edge and put them away early. Liverpool didn’t possess that edge, and just like before, paid for that mistake in spades with a 2-0 defeat that all but ended their title hopes.
What do Liverpool supporters think? Does the club lack that ruthless edge to put teams at the bottom of the table away?
