“I don’t have a number one goalkeeper” claims Tottenham manager: Who should he pick?
by stresster on March 6th, 2009 7 commentsAlthough Harry Redknapp has not exactly been full of praise for this player since arriving to become Tottenham manager, could the £7.8 million signing still have a future at White Hart Lane?
Heurelho Gomes has had a troubled season for Spurs, although they always say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. It appears as though the Brazilian hasn’t done enough damage between the sticks for Redders to want to immediately get shot of him in the simmer, with the Daily Mail reporting that the goalkeeper’s jersey is still up for grabs.
The Tottenham boss said: ‘Gomes is in the team at the moment. I don’t have a No 1 goalkeeper. When I signed Carlo from Chelsea in January, it was difficult to leave Gomes out and it was hard to leave out Carlo for the game against Boro.
‘I will pick whoever is in form and whoever is right on a particular occasion.’
Many expected Carlo Cudicini to return to the Tottenham team against Middlesbrough, although Gomes has now kept consecutive clean sheets, unless you count the penalties that Manchester United scored at Wembley. Who do Spurs fans want to see in goal for the long-term, Gomes, Cudicini or someone completely different?!

Gomes – we paid a ton for the block so let him have his do. Cudicini, as nice a guy as he is, has always been a back up goalie. I don’t think it matters what he thinks, he’s been in the PL for a while and has had a go so he should be used to the speed of our game. Gomes came in highly teed and all but said at the beginning of the season, that the speed of the game is a very difficult adjustment. If you look at his progression, he is handling the pipes much better now, better still I think than Cudicini. I think Gomes is our #1 but the italian stallion should be given a game every few weeks to keep him sharp(ish).

Gomes is a good keeper. He is learning to adopt to the dead ball situations so prevalent in the premier league. Compared to the beg of the season he has vastly improved, so play him and let him keep adapting.
Also, he is not 50 years old like ol man Carlos.

Gomes – He is still improving and has 10 good years left on the top. Give him time and support then he could be quality for us in the long run.
It´s all about confidence!
Just one thing….Keep players on BOTH posts on defensive corners then we wont have to conceed stupid goals like we do far too often. I can´t believe we only guard one post.
Now lets climb up that table!
