Manchester United are seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, with a game in hand on their nearest rivals. While everyone was saying at Christmas that the title race could easily go down to the wire, the Red Devils have made a mockery of this with a run of form that no other team has been able to live with.
Jose Mourinho has been asked for his opinion on the runaway leaders and, rather than praise them for their achievements (his Inter team do have to face them next week after all), he has questioned why Chelsea and Liverpool have fallen so woefully short. The Daily Mail reports that according to the man with the large mouth, no team of his would have allowed such a big gap to emerge, while he reckons nobody ever really thought Liverpool were going to stay at the top.
‘They are a great team, but if I was at a top club in England I think the title race might have been a lot closer this year.
‘Chelsea have had no stability, Arsenal are nowhere and Liverpool threatened but I don’t think anybody really thought they were ever going to win it.
‘I would not allow a team of mine to be so far behind. It is embarrassing in early March. Manchester United has a great squad, but are their players really that much better than Chelsea or Liverpool’s.’
Manchester United supporters would argue that they do have a vastly superior squad to Chelsea or Liverpool, with Sir Alex Ferguson having two quality players for every position. Do the supporters think that Mourinho is correct that it’s ’embarrassing’ for one team to be racing away at the top? Will the Red Devils dominate English football for the foreseeable future?
