Aston Villa are ready to pounce for Michael Owen in the summer if the striker fails to agree new terms with Newcastle.
The Tyneside club have put talks about a new contract with the England international on hold until their Premier League status is confirmed.
If the Magpies are relegated there is no way they will be able to keep former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker Owen at St James’ Park.
Everton would also be interested in the Merseysider but Villa want to partner him with Emile Heskey to rekindle their successful partnership at international level.
If the Midlanders fail to sign Owen they may make a move for Tottenham strikers Jermain Defoe or Darren Bent. (Metro)
So Aston Villa are essentially after a whole host of strikers and Bent and Defoe are among them. Darren Bent may well seek a move away from the club if he is not assured of first team football when JD returns from injury. As for Martin O’Neill turning his attention on Defoe, well that would be most unlikely given the fact he has only just arrived back at White Hart Lane and is not likely to leave yet again anytime soon!
