Is this Chelsea defender getting off too easy? A stern talk from the manager doesn’t seem right!

by offsidetrap on March 6th, 2009 1 comment

Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink made it clear today that Chelsea defender Ashley Cole wouldn’t be getting off easily for his druken fiasco on Thursday night. But is a “firm” talking to enough of a punishment?

Ashley Cole has been given a “firm” talking to by the Chelsea manager, Guus Hiddink, after his late-night arrest and fine for allegedly being drunk and disorderly, but the Chelsea defender will play in the FA Cup quarter-final tie at Coventry City tomorrow.

Hiddink, who revealed that another of his full-backs, Paulo Ferreira, was out for the season with knee ligament damage, admitted that Cole had gone “a bit too far” with his abusive complaints to police officers about what he felt was harassment by the paparazzi in the small hours of Thursday morning, as he left the Collection restaurant on Brompton Road. (The Guardian)

The defender is set to feature in the weekend FA Cup match against Coventry and for all intents and purposes the ordeal seems to be a moot point with the Chelsea hierarchy. Hiddink did was he was supposed to be by talking to the player; but wouldn’t a one-game suspension been a better decision? It may have forced Cole to think a bit more the next time around. Do Chelsea supporters agree?
