Mr. Benitez gets ready for another busy summer in the transfer market!
Rafa Benitez has conceded Liverpool need more firepower and has added a striker to a list of summer transfer targets that also includes a winger, full-back and central defender.
The Liverpool manager believes the partnership between Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard is as good as any in the Barclays Premier League but is mindful of how injury has taken its toll on both players this season.
Linked with Almeria frontrunner Alvaro Negredo, after being priced out of a move for Valencia’s David Villa, he dismissed any fears that Robbie Keane’s recent frustrations at Anfield may deter others from trying their luck.
‘Torres and Gerrard play very well together, but we have 60 or so games a season, and there will be plenty of chances for other players,’ he said. ‘I can’t see there being a problem, and we are continuing to work hard at identifying the players who can improve us. It is important we sign the right ones, but I am confident we will.’ (Daily Mail)
So that’s get this straight. Rafa believes his side needs a striker, a winger, a full back and a central defender. So essentially he is saying he is happy with his keeper and his central midfield! I can see why he would feel the need for another striker and perhaps even a back up centre back to go with the likes of Jamie C, Martin “hard as nails” Skrtel and Daniel “no more room for tattoos” Agger. I think the club could do with a right winger for as hard as Dirk Kuyt has done out there it is still a case of putting a square peg into a round hole but does the club need another full back?
On the left they have a hugely improved Emiliano Insua and in Aurelio a player who is as good as he has been in a Liverpool shirt. They also have Andrea Dossena (who has also improved) On the right they have stability personified in the form of Alvaro Arbeloa and of course if needed a very capable full back in Mr. Carragher and oh yes they have Phillipp Degen (a player who’s Liverpool career has stumbled since day one. So not sure why the club would need another player in those positions unless of a course it was a player as good as say Glen Johnson then maybe it would make sense.
The issue of a striker is a much talked about one and whilst its true the club has scored more goals than anyone else in the Premier League they do still need a proven front man to play with Torres but who should be that man?
Who would Liverpool fans like to see fill the spaces outlined by Rafa?
