Liverpool to make £12m move for Ludicrously Overrated Winger

The Rumour
Stewart Downing has emerged as the preferred choice to solve Rafa Benitez’s need for more width and will be the subject of a £12m bid by Liverpool at the end of the season.
Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon was also in the frame, but Benitez has switched focus to the left flank and Middlesbrough winger Downing, after being impressed by Dirk Kuyt’s impact on the right this season.
Benitez said: ‘Someone called him Mr Duracell, and that is a good description for him, because he is like the bunny in the advert. He is always on the go, always running.’

The Analysis
Rafa already has a very good left winger in the form of Albert Riera and failing that they also have Ryan Babel who whilst he hasn’t come along as nicely as the fans would have hoped still has bags of potential. Stewart Downing is not as good as either of these players in my opinion and i am sure that the Liverpool boss will realise this before he goes ahead and bids for the Middlesbrough man.
I am of the opinion that Downing may well be the most overrated player in the top tier and isn’t strange how every season he is linked with a move to a big side he never leaves, now you could argue that the reason for this is that Steve Gibson refused to give in to a clubs demands or perhaps you could deduce that no club has actually gone as far as to make a serious and sustained attempt to purchase the England international? I know which of the two strands of thought i would opt for.
I am not saying he is useless but i am saying he isn’t good enough for a Champions League level side.
The Likelihood
Downing to Liverpool: Not going to happen!

buy downing as a repalcement for babel but dont sell riera
9torres - May 12th, 2009 at 11:06 am
Outs:
Itandje
Voronin
Pennant
Deggen
Dossena
Babel
Alonso (really not sure about this, love him as a player and it’s a very tight call but would the extra money benefit the team?)
In:
Pranjic
Barry
Aguero
G.Johnson
This way we are trimming the fat, adding English players to the starting XI and not spending much money. It gives also us a players who can play a variety of positions:
Barry – CDM CM CAM LB LM
Pranjic – LB LM LWF
Aguero – SS CF CAM
Johnson – RB RM RWB
By trimming the other players it also will present opportunities for N’Gog, Nemeth, Gulacsi, Bouzanis, Darby and Spearing, along with Martin Kelly and San Jose now that Hyypia is off. I just think in terms of development we are adding to the first XI and allowing youth to flourish, as well as making sound financial sense. The only sticking point for me is Alonso leaving. If we are offered anything less than £25m then its a no for me.
But how many of you would swap Alonso plus cash for Barry and Aguero???

i’d be happy to shift riera out…don’t want downing, but with the home grown quota coming in, it wouldn’t be a bad move.
9torres/D Ried…evening gents.
i’m another one who isn’t sure about the sell him/keep him debate with alonso. heart says keep him, head says, if someone will pay £20 million, flog him.
maybe i’ve been watching the apprentice too much????
