The all new rumour reporting article system is in full effect!
Newcastle United boss Alan Shearer is planning a bid for Wigan Athletic defender Paul Scharner.
The Mirror says Shearer and his staff are working on targets for the summer in the hope they beat the drop – and the feelers have already gone out for the experienced centre-back who could beef up a weak defence.
Scharner has been at Wigan for three seasons, but has hinted he wants a move. He has an escape clause in his contract that would force Wigan to sell if they receive an offer of £6million or more – even though Magpies owner Mike Ashley and his Latics counterpart Dave Whelan have fallen out.

Paul Scharner is a old fashioned type of footballer who also has a fair amount of ability on the ball to go with his at times no nonsense approach to the game. Equally adept at the centre of defence or in central midfield i can see why Alan Shearer may be planning on signing the Austrian but i was under the impression that the one time TV pundit was going to give the job up at the end of the season? Maybe the former playing legend fancies the Toon Army job full time?
Clearly Newcastle United need some solidity in the team and the 29 year old Wigan man wouldn’t break the bank and he would probably like the opportunity to move to a club of such stature and if so Steve Bruce must once again plan for the loss of one of his stars and having already lost Palacios, Heskey and Ryan Taylor in January he probably will lose Valencia and on loan striker Zaki in the summer so it may well be a busy summer of re-building for the Latics boss.
Sharner to Newcastle: One to put in the quite probable box.
