Liverpool line up £8m Winger as First Signing of the Summer

The Rumour
Liverpool are set to land Croatian international Daniel Pranjic from Heerenveen in an £8million deal.
The 26-year-old left-sided midfielder, who scored 16 goals in the Dutch League this season to help Herenveen qualify for Europe, sent agent Soren Lerby to Anfield this week to discuss terms.
Lerby then flew to Holland on Friday to speak with Heerenveen and club director Yme Kuiper admitted: “We understand Liverpool is the club where Pranjic wants to go.”

The Analysis
This rumour has been circulating for some time and appears to have more than a little validity. However it’s a move that would confuse me quite a bit. Albert Riera was brought in by Rafa and all in all the left winger has been a success and unless he is being carted off or Ryan Babel likewise, then i don’t see that Pranjic offers anything in the way of an improvement at what the club already has.
Of course the seasons are long and a successful side could find themselves playing 60 odd games so you need strength in depth but the club has more than enough coming through the ranks and more than enough in the way of squad players and surely Rafa should be looking for big names to do a big job for the team. The club is probably two good signings away from giving Man United a run for their money and as decent as this Heerenveen player is he just doesn’t strike me as the answer, that being said it does seem like a move that is set to happen.
The Likelihood
Pranjic to Liverpool: Seems likely to be Benitez’s first purchase of the summer.

Pranjic can play up and down the left wing, though, as both a midfielder and a defender, which makes him a fairly versatile asset on the left. I don’t see Riera going anywhere considering how well he’s played since arriving (including some incredible goals), so it could very well signal the end of either Dossena or Babel. Personally, I fancy Babel a hell of a lot more than Dossena, but if time has proven anything it’s that it is impossible to know what is going on in Rafa’s head.
