Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill has entered the race to sign England winger Stewart Downing.
The 24-year-old will quit Middlesbrough at the end of the season and Liverpool and Spurs are interested.
But Rafa Benitez has stalled at Boro’s £12million asking price and Spurs cannot offer the European football that Downing (right) wants to help push his claims for a starting role in Fabio Capello’s side.
O’Neill has already proven he is not frightened to splash out big fees on young English talent.

Like moths around a light bulb a queue is forming around this England wide man as his Boro side slips closer and closer to the Championship. The incredibly one footed occasional good crosser of the ball will surely leave the Riverside so that he can continue his Premier League career and now it appears Martin O’Neill has entered the race.
I am sure Liverpool will not sign the left winger but interest from Spurs and Aston Villa is growing for the 24 year old one club man but again i am left scratching my head and wondering why? Harry Redknapp for instance has moved Luka Modric out on the left with a great measure of success and the midlands outfit has Ashley Young doing brilliantly out on that side, so why would either team consider such a swoop. Well the only logical explanation would be that perhaps either club was about to lose either player mentioned, but i don’t see that happening this summer.
Stewart Downing to move to Aston Villa/Liverpool/Tottenham: If O’Neill loses Ashley Young then maybe, otherwise i have a sneaking suspicion that Steve Gibson will deliberately price him out of a move so as to keep him at the club.
