Rafael Benitez is closing in on a £15m deal to take Portsmouth and England defender Glen Johnson to Anfield. The Spaniard is also weighing up a bid for Heerenveen winger Daniel Pranjic.

Rafa is getting ready for another busy summer of transfer dealings it seems and whilst the tabloids and websites list countless targets i think it’s fair to say that the Merseyside outfit needs only a few changes rather than a major overhaul.
These widemen have been much touted as realistic targets but of the two only one seems like a deal worthy of completion. Alvaro Arbeloa could do with real competition for his right back slot and only currently experiences a challenge for his slot when Jamie Carragher is occasionally shifted from centre back, Glen Johnson would not only provide that much needed battle for the spot he is in my opinion an improvement on what is already present at Liverpool.
Conversely i see no worth whatsoever in the pursuit of Heerenveen’s left winger Daniel Pranjic. He isn’t young, 27, he may have had a good season but that was whilst plying his trade for a Eredivisie side that finished 20 points from top spot, and he is not as good as the likes of Albert Riera or indeed a misfiring Ryan Babel. Even as back up i wouldn’t consider this a wise move as he has little top level experience.
Johnson and Pranjic to Liverpool: The Pompey man is a possible but surely Benitez will overlook the Croat.
