The Rumour
Javi Martinez is regarded as one of the best prospects in Spain. And Bilbao, who have the 20-year-old under contract until 2012, want around £10m.
But Liverpool boss Benitez wants to thrash out a cut-price deal.
Martinez said: “Any player would want to be part of such a good squad.”

The Analysis
Clearly a move Javi is either a way of Rafa continued push to build for what promises to be a bright future or Benitez’s way to deal the potential exit of Xabi Alonso who according to statements from his agent appears ready to quit the club.
The young Bilbao midfielder is indeed a hot prospect who would already have been capped by his country had there not been such a wealth of established quality players in his position but Javi’s time will come and perhaps he feels that he has no choice but to leave his mid table La Liga side for pastures new and a move to the Premier League and in particular to a Liverpool side which already employs a great many fellow countrymen is sure to be part of his thinking.
I am sure many Anfield fans would hope that this move wouldn’t act as a way of leveraging an Alonos exit perhaps Martinez could simply be brought in place of donkeys such as Lucas?
The Likelihood
Martinez to Liverpool: If Rafa wants him badly enough then I see this move as very much on the cards.

good player, much better than Alonso was at his age! Tall (6ft 3′), strong, has pace, good passing ability. Obviously Alonso is one of the best passers in world football, but Martinez has good passing, complemented by his ability to drive forward with the ball in a way similar to Gerrard. Replacement for Lucas possibly?

You’re right 9Torres,He sounds good. But if Xabi wants to leae badly, then i say he can. But if we need a replacement I say Iniesta. He was amazing against Man Utd! I’d say Xavi but he is 28, while Iniesta is 24.
Martinez does sound good. But I am fed up of Rafa paying £10mill on total losers. Gonzalez, Zenden, Morientes, Kronkamp, etc. Hopefully he will impress!
I also think people should stop judging Lucas. He is 21 and is new to the Premiership. Before us, he was playing in Brazil, it takes time to adjust!

I have not really heard much about Ibanez or seen very much of him either. However he was a colleague of Torres at Athletico and I’m pretty sure if he is as good as what the reports suggest Torres would recommend him.
I think he will be a replacement for Lucas Leiva. With Pacheco, Degen, Darby and Nemeth all pushing through the youth of Liverpool FC the future is looking bright and is definitely growing stronger.
I think Liverpool will be looking to offload:
Ryan Babel
Jermaine Pennant (The post of selling him for 6m make me laugh hes on a free guys wake up)
Charles Itandje
Nabil El-Zhar
Andriy Voronin
Andrea Dossena
As for bringing players in I will leave that open but 2 16m+ players are required, mainly being an attacking midfielder who can play on the left and a striker. However the strike is not as important if the attacking midfielder who is bought can play behind torres, (i.e Silva)

Erm Martinez not Ibanez >_<

Can’t agree with you there Chris, El-Zhar has shown promise, and if he is happy battling for a place i see no need in getting rid.
“With Pacheco, Degen, Darby and Nemeth all pushing through the youth of Liverpool FC the future is looking bright and is definitely growing stronger”
There is one glaring mistake in that sentence. I’ll give you a clue, he’s 25, Swiss and even more injury prone than Michael Owen and Darren Anderton put together…

i think rafa benitez should make it a top priority to cash in on carlos tevez to back torres upfront as the argentine has already lost interest with sir alex fergie’s man united.

hey rock of anfield im pretty sure lucas is older than 21…i might be wrong. but if u think we have a chance of getting iniesta even if we had the money then ur dilusional
Coggin - May 29th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
This looks to be a good signing and at 10m for a young player the cost is very good as well, if Alonso does go and I hope not then we should be getting in the region of 23m (he’s worth it) which would give us an extra 13m, plus what we get from selling Dossena, Babel, Voronin, lucas (maybe), Itandje, Riera plus what Portsmouth still owe on the Crouch deal plus what we get from bagging 2nd spot in the prem, tv money and the money from the yanks should give us about 50 – 60m so I feel confident that Rafa will sign so star players this year and not more poor fringe players.
9 Torres, maybe El-Zhar should be put out to loan to a premiership team to get some more games under his belt, same maybe for Babel just to see if he comes good?

He joined us in July 2007, almost 2 years ago, how much time would you care to give this bloke and how many more times do you want to see this lad replace Gerrard in a match???????
Would you not rather see Spearing replace Gerrard instead of Lucas?????
Personally I only see Lucas as a liability and I cringe everytime I see him in a Red shirt. He has had 2 years, hasn’t done it therefore we need to move on and forget living in the “he’s got great potential” circle that far too many fan’s seem to live in.

why does every1 want to get rid of riera he has been a great signing 4 8million and we don’t want too many new players. remember how many players tottenham sold and bought in the amount of transfers they bought disrupted the team.
to go
babel
degen
alonso(if very good offer made)
intadje
to arrive
silva
lavezzi
xavi martinez
johson
another young cheap winger under 3mill

Javi is a good player. For now, rafa seems to want one more centre midfield, the better option is Alonso + Barry, but if Alonso leaves, or Barry deal undone, Javi seems to be the second choice for Rafa. There are also possible to sell Lucas but seems not.
But the problem is, Javi seems the centre midfield in attack, don’t know his ability on defence and the adaptability on Premier League.
Javi is the player I really want him in Liverpool squad, hope he can join us in one day.

Steve McMahon – May 29th, 2009 at 12:07 pm ……”Would you not rather see Spearing replace Gerrard instead of Lucas?????” You are right Spearing should be given the chance instead of Lucas…… Even Bable has shown so glints of ability in his play. I have never seen any from Lucas

The level of stupidity on here is laughable, some of you need to learn more about the team. Instead of playing fifa, football manager etc..! Alonso please stay don’t mind martinez but not as a replacement!
Jacob - May 31st, 2009 at 11:45 am
Alonso doesnt want to leave!!!!!
Can anybody find a quote from either liverpool or Xabi about his desire to play elsewhere?
Its all made up by some stupid journalist, who wants to sell newspapers! its all utter crap
Martinez would be a good replacement for lucas, however rafa seems to like lucas (plays him alot) so i don’t see him going either.
