Aston Villa have inquired about David Bentley’s future at Spurs.
Bentley is set to be sold by Spurs following an ill-fated £15m move from Blackburn. A swap involving Villa’s Gareth Barry is a possibility.

A great many Tottenham fans predicted that Bentley’s return to north London would be an expensive mistake and it appears they were correct but it’s worth pondering the question why things didn’t work out. Yes I, like most football fans, thought the price that Spurs paid to Blackburn for the attacking midfielder was inflated as in all honesty he had only had one season of success on the field and that too was peppered with average displays and occasional performances where you wondered if he was ever there at all.
Clearly the early season collapse at White Hart Lane can not be laid on any one players shoulders but it seemed that Harry Redknapp had little interest in the former Arsenal man and played him on occasion at the beginning of his stint (most notably in the 4-4 derby game which will long be remembered for Bentley’s long range opener) and then the use of the England man became less and less frequent and it now seems eminently probable that he will be sold before the new season gets under way.
Many believe the 24 year old is a show pony who appears self obsessed both on and off the field so he is unlikely to believe that a move to Aston Villa is his only option and he may attempt to hold out for a supposed ‘bigger’ move but if I was David I would see a move to Villa Park as a good one and perhaps a move that could help him grow as a player.
Bentley to Aston Villa: Surely set for an exit and perhaps a move to join Martin O’Neill’s side would suit him best.
