The Magpies owner looking for some silver in exchange for badly damaged club.
ALAN SHEARER’S future as Newcastle manager is hanging in the balance after Mike Ashley officially put the club up for sale.
Shearer and assistant Iain Dowie threatened to walk out this week after Ashley was unable to assure them funds would be available for rebuilding.
And now there are real doubts Shearer will stay after Ashley revealed he is looking for a quick sale. Sources close to the club believe he would take as little as £80million for Newcastle.
Ashley said: “It has been catastrophic for everybody. I’ve lost my money and I’ve made terrible decisions. Now I want to sell it as soon as I can . . . advisers will be appointed shortly.” (News of the World)
There can be few more odious men in Football than the rotund Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and frankly his bleating about losing a lot of his money will only be seen as a just penance by the Toon Army faithful who deserve a far better Chairman than Ashley. Of course there are a rumours abound of foreign interest in the club but obviously falling to the Championship makes such a deal far more problematic and Mr. Ashley can take a lions share of the responsibility for the club’s relegation thanks to a succession of bad decisions.
Hopefully the club will be bought up by the type of chairman that pumps ample money into the club without looking to get too involved in the playing side of matters and doesn’t reach for the self destruct button five times a season as Ashley has done. Clearly the club needs to bounce back sharpish as it appears that any club that doesn’t do so runs the risk of falling into a state of disrepair largely due to the vanishing of the parachute payment the clubs receive when the fail to beat the drop.
