Liverpool to Make £54m Quartet Raid: One Great, Two Good, One Average!
by Steven Constable on June 2nd, 2009 389 words | 32 commentsThe all new rumour reporting article system is in full effect!
The Rumour
It is widely expected that the Spaniard will reignite his pursuit of Gareth Barry – a player he chased so publicly last summer and who is said to have caused tensions between Benitez and Alonso.
PSG’s Stephane Sessegnon, Portsmouth’s Glen Johnson and Valencia winger David Silva are also on the Merseyside list of targets.
But for now at least Benitez remains true to his word that big names will not be leaving Anfield.
“The situation is clear,” he said. “We do not want to sell our best players and that includes Xabi.
“He’s had a very good season for us and can be an important player in the future – there is no agreement with Real and we want him to be part of our plans going forward.”
The Source: (Daily Telegraph)
The Analysis
Having come agonizingly close to breaking the 19 year wait for the domestic title Rafa is clearly going to mean business this summer as he looks to make some light touches to the squad to make it battle ready for the coming season. With that in mind this source suggests that four players are uppermost in Benitez’s transfer plans.
Of the Quartet I feel David Silva and Glen Johnson could be the key players. The Valencia man could be used to bridge the midfield to the frontline and depending on which position Liverpool opt to play him he could either be used out wide or more effectively directly behind Fernando Torres.
Johnson could be a good signing also as I feel he has more to offer than resident right back Alvaro Arbeloa both in defensive and perhaps more notably when pushing forwards. Sessegnon has had a good season at PSG but as a signing wouldn’t offer any improvement on what is already sitting on the bench at Anfield which leaves us with Gareth Barry.
I think Benitez will give up on the Aston Villa man, which would be a wise move, leaving Barry with the unenviable position of either looking for another potential employer or heading back to Martin O’Neill with his tail between his legs looking for a new contract.
The Likelihood
Sessegnon/Silva/Barry/Johnson to Liverpool: Benitez will secure at least one of these four and my money is still on David Silva.

Great article.
Ill take johnson, silva and sessegnon
lifc - June 2nd, 2009 at 12:47 pm
yes barry is going to city
jebote - June 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 pm
heard of sessegnon, unfortunately havn’t seen much of him play. anyone know what he’s like?
definately would welcome g.johnson to anfield. aswell as silva, but until both deals are done, i won’t build up false hope of us signing both.
heard we also beenlinked with mauro zarate, more unlikely than either johnson or silva, but he is my favorite non-liverpool player so would def. like to see him in the red of liverpool next year.
napoli just completed signings of fabio quagliarella and luca cigarini so it looks as if there set for a serious top 6 finish in serie a next season. so id be suprised if we get lavezzi.
i would like to finish by saying that although g.barry might be a good player, and could well slot into a bench spot in out midfield nicely … i would rather stick with lucas. i seriously think alot of fans have shaped there views of him on a few poor performances. this season for him i believe has been positive and none of us really know how much progress he is making on the training ground. benitez knows his squad better than anyone, after all he’s the manager. also … stevie g recently praised lucas for his talent and suggested we should keep hold of him as he really is showing promise. so common sense tells me that if our own manager and club captain tell us lucas is a good player showin alot of promise, then i find it hard to disagree or speculate on the issue. to those out there critically analysing his every move on the football pitch, think before you make assumptions or jump on the ‘let get rid of lucas’ bandwagon. it dissapoints me.

jebote, you raised a lot of points with value. regarding lucas, i respect your optimism and am prepared to see his performance for one more season. i really hope gerrard is right about him.
i am still unsure about johnson. don’t get me wrong, his performance has been great this season but there is no guarantee he will perform for liverpool. we don’t have too look too far away than keane’s example.
alonso will stay on. all the reported rumours are just drummed up rubbish by teh spanish press.
silva, i think will come. i hope so. as for segssenon, who is he?
john - June 2nd, 2009 at 2:17 pm
jebote: i seen some sessegnon vids on youtube and while i know they can be changed to make him look better than he is, he still looks amazing. i put in highlights of him against other teams so instead of seeing all hes best bits from a whole career put into 2 mins of footage, i saw 90 mins compressed into 5. from what i seen so far of footage of him vs lyon and marseille he looks like he could be a brilliant player. he is 24 (which means he has both youth and experience) hes main strength is when he is on the ball he sometimes seems impossible to disposess. he likes to run at players and outmanouver them in much the same way as ronaldo. for me he would most definately be a great signing and how it can be said he is no better than what we have on the bench i dont know (lucas+dossena lol) he is also very fast.
here is the link of him vs lyon:

also to jebote: gerrard and benitez arent jus gonna come right out to the press and say “lucas is a load of crap i cant wait to get rid of him and dossena” are they.
also remember that right up until keane went benitez was sayin how he had a future at liverpool
9torres - June 2nd, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Lavezzi is the only player we seem to be remotely close to signing and even then we don’t know if it is Liverpool or United who are being linked. Barry will be at City by the end of the week.
Dom - June 2nd, 2009 at 3:16 pm
I hope we can get sessagnon. I don’t know 1 african player who hasn’t adapted to the premiership.
Also if we can get martinez and sell lucas, maybe use it as part of the deal?
We def need to get silva.
I want either lavezzi or tevez, seein as aguero, henry, eto etc are so unlikely.
Finally, if we dnt get g johnson, its not a huge loss but his cover would be sorely needed.
john - June 2nd, 2009 at 3:28 pm
i think people seem to be forgetting degen. he was bought as [possibly a replacement for arbeloa and i have been reliably informed by a friend who supports the club he came from (dortmund i think) that he is good. he has been performing really well in reserves the last game or 2 of season while gettin back to fitness. maybe when he gets a chance we will see what he is worth
Dom - June 2nd, 2009 at 3:47 pm
John… your friend has mis informed you.
We got injury prone degen on a free. He then was injured. Then was fit again for all of 5 games. And injured himself. He was then. Fit, and injured again.
Then he recovered and made a reserve start against manchester united after 6 months out…
He scored the opener, then… yep, u guessed it. He went off injured after 17 minutes.
And as a fan who watches the reserves… he isn’t all that. Its best for all liverpool fans to just forget about him
LFC "Supporter" - June 2nd, 2009 at 3:58 pm
who’s worst, him or Kewell… then again Kewell did get us some goals, each one costing £1 million.
Dom - June 2nd, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Kewell was better.
Degen didn’t cost us anything. He was a free. Now we know why lol
john - June 2nd, 2009 at 4:32 pm
dom that doesnt mean i was misinformed i didnt say we paid money for him. but if he wasnt a quality player before then why did bnitez sign him. h has just been unfortunate with injuries. i watch the reserves also and that is how i know he has been playing the last few games for them. u also cant expect a player to come back from 6months out and play to the level he was when at full fitness. and now he has had what… less than 5 1st team games(i dunno how many its just a guess) due to injury and u expect him to be better than nearly all the ressies? u gotta give him more of a chance.
Dom - June 2nd, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Lol he’s practically unheard of. Dortmund didn’t wanna keep hold of him. That’s why he was a bosman.
Let’s put it this way. Why did benitez sign gonzales? Morientes? Voronin? Lucas? Dossena? Because they was class before? No cos he got it wrong.
I have faith in benitez but sometimes his signing baffle me.
Dom - June 2nd, 2009 at 4:54 pm
In saying that, when he gets it right, boi does he get it right.
Arbeloa, aurelio, torres, alonso, benayoun, mascherano, agger, skrtel, kuyt, riera.. even babel
Dom - June 2nd, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Ooops 4got reina!!!
red ross - June 2nd, 2009 at 5:17 pm
completely agree about segesson and silva them as main targets but lavezzi is also quality so that is what i think johnson has done well but we dont need chelsea rejects sell babel and lucas and martinez looks good for his age
tivz - June 2nd, 2009 at 7:47 pm
i wud just make mi day to see david silva t liverpool …wiked hope it happens
john - June 2nd, 2009 at 9:34 pm
red ross: if u really are honest then this next season is almost make or break. we NEED to win the prem this season or at least push it close because if united win it again then they have overtaken us and im afraid it might very well be the end of benitez. therefore we dont really need people who as you put it are good for their age. even if it takes signing 1 or 2 who are older than u would want but have what we need.
dom: look at the people u say were nobodys beforehand. voronin is now kickin a storm in the bundesliga, lucas was very good in the brazilian league, u cant say morientes wasnt known before. its just separating the men from the boys when you sign players. u look at voronin: fairly strong+fairly fast, u would think he could make it in the physical premier league but didnt. whereas people like modric who were apparently going to be too weak and small are thriving. but did u ever hear of him or reina, hyypia, agger, skrtel, arbeloa, masch, riera or kuyt before they were signed? maybe u did but alot of people certainly didnt but u can hardly say they are bad signings.

BARRY WENT TO CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELL YEAH, thank god we didnt end up with that shit,
liverpool need silva, negredo, and raul ablbiol, loan out ngog, sell babel, dossena, bring up danny pacheco and dalla valle to the bench. and let the silverwear come.
TEDSUZUKI - June 3rd, 2009 at 1:17 am
“It is widely expected that the Spaniard will reignite his pursuit of Gareth Barry – a player he chased so publicly last summer and who is said to have caused tensions between Benitez and Alonso.”
Just goes to show how unreliable all these press reports are! Barry signed for City this morning. All the talk about leaving Villa for Champions LEague football proves to be just spin and not substance. Glad he didn’t end up at Liverpool. He is crap anyway. Only teams like Man City where nobody wants to to go will be so silly to offer ridiculous prices for pretty average players.
Warrenisaredfan - June 3rd, 2009 at 4:47 am
Of the four suggested I would most like to see Sessegnon in a red shirt. He is better than Silva in my eyes and before you ask I am not just basing this on Youtube, no, I watch the french highlights from time to time and Sessegnon is consistently the best in Ligue1, he has been commentated on more times then I care to remember and unlike the article suggests he would never be a bench player instead he would walk into our startingX1 much like Silva would. Arguably he has better performed then Benzema this season and I think he will only get better. £12-15m for a player of his quality would be a fee well worth paying.
Warrenisaredfan - June 3rd, 2009 at 4:47 am
good luck to barry at city
Allahs boot - June 3rd, 2009 at 5:21 am
ha good luck to barry,he sure as shit is going to need it.take lucas neill for example, decided against liverpool and look where he is at in his career now.barry would have been better off staying at villa,or even going to everton, than going to citeh.thank fuck lucas neill and gareth barry didnt sign with liverpool.alonso would have left, and skrtel would still be shin kicking in russia
QaiyumLFC - June 3rd, 2009 at 8:13 am
glen johnson and david silva will be a good signing..bring back Micheal OWEN
TEDSUZUKI - June 3rd, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Johnson is worth considering though I have mixed feelings about him. If we can bring Silva in, that would be super. Owen? No way! He can join Everton.
9torres - June 3rd, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Silva, Lavezzi, Martinez for Lucas plus cash, De Ceglie for Dossena, and a right back and we have done very well.
lewi - June 5th, 2009 at 11:51 am
to the person called dom are you dpm jones from bolton just asking. barry has gone to city
Dom - June 5th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
No…?
jimmycarterwingwizard - June 7th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
PLEASE DONT BRING BACK THAT GREEDY TWAT OWEN!
GOING TO THE GEORDIE SHITE BEFORE US WANKER!
barni - June 11th, 2009 at 11:42 am
have heard a rumor that silva wants to join us, but its down to real madrid, they want him too? along with inter and barca, he wants to go to liverpool, he is very close to reina, and like playing torres, he is very young still, so its the club who can offer him his surroundings, rafa has siad he is still young and he wants young talent? this could happen but not for anything less than 22 million, i have a feeling that silva will go to mardrid because of all the money the new president has. oh well, but i keep hearing that silva has signed already for liverpool, it is silly season but you just do not know in football anymore,
