Liverpool are weighing up a cash-plus-player offer from Real Madrid for Xabi Alonso.
Anfield boss Rafa Benitez had consistently said Alonso was not for sale – and repeated that yesterday after claims a deal had already been done.
Madrid are prepared to tempt Liverpool by throwing in Alvaro Negredo, a striker Benitez had been tracking for months.
Negredo scored 19 goals in 34 games this season for Almeria and has 32 in his two terms in the Spanish top flight.
Madrid insisted on a buyback clause for Negredo when they sold him two years ago.
The 23-year-old is valued at close to £10million, but Real can re-sign him for £4.2m.
If Madrid value Alonso at about £20m and add Negredo, they could well have a deal.
It would effectively mean Liverpool would receive about £25m for Alonso, and at that price Benitez would to listen to offers. Last month Negredo said: “To play next to Fernando Torres at Anfield is a dream.”

Whilst it may well be a “dream” move for Negredo it doesn’t strike me as the best bit of business for Liverpool Football Club. If they are to lose Xabi Alonso then a straight cash deal would be of more use to Rafa for he could surely find a more proven talent than the Almeria man.
Yes Alvaro has had a good season in La Liga this term but a similar statement could be made of the likes of previous flash in the pans such as Daniel Guiza, who finished top scorer last term and has just had a poor season in Turkey. Or even Brazilian Luis Fabiano who also had a great season but then went seriously off the boil in the term just finished.
Benitez would do better to invest the money as he sees fit rather than taking a cash plus player exchange. Clearly it would be better for the club if Alonso stays but if he is going to leave then it should only be for a large amount of cash!
Negredo to Liverpool: I credit Benitez with more sense than to take on board this years ‘Next Big Thing’ as part of any Xabi deal.
