Liverpool Set Sights On £14m Bid for Best Striker On The Planet!
by Steven Constable on June 6th, 2009 48 commentsCould this really happen?
The Rumour
Fernando Torres is far too heavily relied on at Anfield and surely Benitez’s main target this summer will be to relieve some of that pressure. As Eto’o showed in the Champions League final, he remains one the world’s top strikers, and with his contract due to expire next summer, Barcelona may be forced to cash in on the Cameroon international.
The Source: (The Indepedent)
The Analysis
We are not sure whether the Independent believe this to be a realistic move but perhaps it would be worth Rafa registering the club’s interest in the Cameroonian. Noises coming out of Barcelona has suggested that the club may well consider allowing Eto’o leave but surely such a decision would be crazy?
Samuel is the best striker on the planet right now and the lethal finisher just seems to get better and better and the 28 year old has been linked with a move to Manchester City but surely the former Real Madrid man would rather join a team challenging for honours then simply to earn yet more millions?
After netting 36 goals last season it would be surprising if Pepe Guardiola did indeed consider the Nou Camp without Eto’o and I would have thought they would be doing all they could to get the goal machine to sign a new deal. However there would be no harm in Rafa putting in a cheeky bid as clearly a combination of El Nino and the Barca man would be an astonishing pairing.
The Likelihood
Eto’o to Liverpool: Possibly more than just a pipe dream?

Hmm… I know Barca were thinking of selling last season but surely they won’t after his performances and goal return this season. May all hinge on whether they can convince Inter to sell Ibrahimovic. Although Eto’o is a top quality player I’m not sure it would work. Would probably mean switching to 4-4-2 with Gerrard down the right. We would get less from Gerrard as we all know, but then again maybe we wouldn’t need as much with two electric goal machines up top. We’ll see how this one pans out, althought I doubt he’ll be leaving Barca.
Ash - June 6th, 2009 at 11:10 am
lol eto and torres wont work two traditional centre forwards and not to mention the lose of gerrards role aint happening!
Liverpool need wingers!
matty - June 6th, 2009 at 11:17 am
I think the only way we’ll get him is by letting Mascherano join Barca as a swap for Eto’o. I’m not sayin I want this to happen but that will let Gerrard go back to centre mid with Alonso holding. Whatever happens we need a striker(s), winger, defender, and centre mid.
QaiyumLFC - June 6th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
they wont buy eto but probably silva
Irish scouser - June 6th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
no we shud get tuncay eto wud mess up our system tuncay wudn’t start much games but he is a threat and u wud get him cheap
Dom - June 6th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
For 14mil… bargain.
I would rather lavezzi, silva and seesagnon.
Eto wud be awesome tho.

The reality is we have feck all cash again this summer because of those nazi scumy thugs who took over so they could make a pile of cash for free…and they didnt even have the cash to purchase the club..why did parry sell to these thugs..they are ruining the club and have left us trophy less for a second season due to lack of cash, and fighting amonsgst themselves has just derailed us from concentrating on winning…..personally i think we should be looking to get rid of these nazi thugs before we think about buying players ,which we cant aford..and selling mascherano is a mistake ..just like alonso….sell reira…dossena, lucas, arbeloa, and benayoun or babel if we need more funds…we could make up 25 /30 mill on theses players..plus whatever cash those muppets can make available….
coggin - June 6th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Degan, Dossena and Lucas were all kind of cheap, the player you buy for a pound play like players brought for a pound, we need to be able to attract and afford players that will win the league and champion’s league without the need for incredible luck all the time. I don’t see Tuncay as the missing link.

Don’t think E’to’o would fit in…. I’m with Days Of Daglish Are Nearly Back – June 6th, 2009 at 10:57 am ……..” Although Eto’o is a top quality player I’m not sure it would work” ….. Don’t think the 4-4-2 would be a problem, just think Eto’o would be.

jt 1995 is right torres is the best striker in the world but etoo is up there with the best of them and i wud love to see him at anfield but its not gunna happen

we need to defend from the front, liverpool can only get better couple of more players and we are there
TEDSUZUKI - June 6th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
Uhmmm…I am not all that overly concern if we play 4-4-2 or 4-1-3-1-1 or whatever. It’s WHO is going to walk out on the field and play that’s more vital. With the current formation which supposedly in the minds of many more defensive compared to a 4-4-2 yet the recent season they have been banging in goals. The stats doesn’t lie and at least for last season many other teams who play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 are no where near Liverpool’s goals scored.
Eto’o for 14 mill would be a massive bargain but I don’t think there is any credibility in this report. If a player of his quality is available, Man City and Chelsea would be ready to pounce with a ridiculous fee. So that means Liverpool would be unable to match their spending power. I suspect strongly it won’t be 14 million.
Eto’o, I think however would be successful in the EPL. He has guile, clever, fantastic goal poacher and fast. Like any world class players he will adapt but concern is whether he is happy to play in the squad rotation system. if he isn’t, I fear he would be more of a disruptive force more than helping Liverpool’s cause.

We only lost 2 games last season and conceded 27 goals to Man U 24 so I don’t think we need to defend from the front the reason we lost out to Man U was the draws; 7 at home and 4 away, a total of 33 points available we managed 11, we lost the league by 4 points so I would say a lack of goals was the problem, so attack from the front is a better solution. Had Torres been available for all the games I am sure we would have been league winners but he wasn’t and we didn’t. Attack is the best form of defence; we win if we score more than them.
Liverpool fans - June 6th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
I think Eto’o would be a good buy for any where around 14-20m.. although I doubt if Barcelona would sell…
Liverpool can beat any team in the World if the starting eleven are fit (even if we stick with our squad), just see we won over Man U, Chelsea this season.. problem is if Torres injured, as we seen in the past we would even get a draw with the lower table teams… no matter we play Kuyt/Babel/Ngog upfront would not be any serious threat to any team in the league… with Eto’o, all the problem solved and I can imagine we can make 1 of every 2 of those draws into win and you will see we are the champion then…
I believe there would be no problem for 442 too, then Gerard can play in central midfield alongside Alonso/Mascherano and this would provide more flexibility on the formation..
I really hope this trade happen! May be even better than silva/tevez

hes not worth 14 mill, thts a cheeky offer, hes world class 36 goals best striker at this prensent time and he’s only worth 14 mill, as much as i’d love to see torres an eto’o but its highly unlikly exspecially for 14 mill, once we get a new striker what happens to gerrards possition, centeral mid we have alonso and mascerano wich is to strong to mess about with it,would we have to change to a 4-3-1-2?
reina
johnson carragher agger fabio
kuyt mascerano alonso
gerrard
torrers eto’o
although alonso on the wing maybe questionable

not eto’o he has a serious attitude problem. focus on wide areas and keep the same formation. if we have more chance creation then it wont matter so much if torres is injured.

Not a chance. We’ll be lucky to get Silva.
Allahs boot - June 6th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
eto isnt the best striker on the planet.have you actually watched torres play in the last two seasons.and for all of you so called liverpool supporters whinging about signing a player of the calibre of eto(even though it wont happen) and would rather sign someone like tuncay, because then gerrard would be pushed to the right wing.get fuc.ed……….man u had ronaldo, tevez, berbatov, and rooney. we have gerrard and torres. we need a quality striker. or do you actually forget that torres and gerrard got injured last season.
john - June 7th, 2009 at 12:46 am
@allahs boot.: ui think u will find that man u play a different system and often use 3 up front. we only really ever use one man up front with gerrard behind. so really we only need someone to cover for gerrard as at the moment we have bable, kuyt, ngog, pacheco and nemeth who are all more than capable of offering acceptable cover for torres. this is where silva would fit in. he can play left wing when gerrards fit or in gerrards position when gerrards injured. although we may be lucky to get anyone this window seeing how newspapers seem to be thinking the whole of liverpool football club is about to implode.
ezi - June 7th, 2009 at 3:13 am
if rafa doesnt get enough money from gillet n hicks, I think it will be better if we just buy a winger : aaron lennon and david silva, indeed; and right back: jhonson. Then, ryan babel and kyut push back to forward position. So, our main forward will be: torres, kyut, babel, n ngog.
Then, try to use more often the reserve and youngster player from forward (nemeth, pacheco), center back (martin kelly) and right back (darby). They can be used for Carling Cup and a few matches in FA Cup n Champions League.
However, if the money is more than enough, try to buy another striker. eto’o or tevez, or david villa will create a good combination with our current strikers.

This is getting beyone a joke now……Liverpool are liken to a lumbering Sloaf ( An overly large person who is extremely dorky) So slow that we are nearly always missing out on potential players in the tranfer market. …….. Chelsea have resigned Glen Johnson and are hungrily eye the likes of Aguero,Sessegnon and David Villa,….. Man Utd have are looking at Levazzi, and Benzema Real Madrid having signed Kaka now have D Silva and Javi Martinez, firmly locked in thier sights and who have Liverpool being linked with now???……Tuncay and Peter Crouch ………. Rafa needs to get his finger out and make a top signing for Liverpool this week…..Aguero,Sessegnon,Tevez,D Silva or Javi Martinez. anyone of these, for if we miss out on these players I fear we will have yet another trophyless season and a real suggle to finish 4th….. And that being the case I will be renewing my call for Raf’s head…

eto 14 mill? what fucking planet are those who even think barca would sell for a player wait a minute worth 2 mill more than barry!
the lad is class no arguements…however even tho’ i would have him in a shot …it just will not happen? if those have read an early post of mine possibly may eto…is slighly moody & stroppy…& is not a rafa type player unless he has had rapid surgery to remove his thoughts of safety & lets not get beat policy…i just cant see it! as for the this week what a depressing & wake-up call fingers crossed to those blinkered fans who “were gone win the league” brigade really see us challenging from being linked to the barry & silvas of the world ….now were down to fuckin tuncay & dystin….& fuck me crouch!
our great club has been swallowed up by those fat money grabbing cocks from beyond the pool…………………..hope you can sleep at night MOORES? this summer folks is shit or bust & if you cant see it then you really need to wake up because the seriousness are club in is frightening….

yo donnovan as far as i know nearly alla those are untrue mate. johnson hasnt signed for chelsea yet. kaka hasnt signed for madrid yet. its mainly paper talk.
and dont forget eto’o only has a year left on hes contract therefore 14 million is about right. we NEED another big star name. doesnt really matter which position. but they must be capable of bein match winners. our only big names are gerrard and torres and alonso is bordering on big star name. kuyt can be a match winner but on the right wing hes not exactly an answer to christiano ronaldo or even aaron lennon. kuyt is more of a quick fix. if we are going to get another big star name then i would prefer it be a winger with a wicked cross on him. although a striker who is the same sort of player as tevez, rooney or carew wouldnt go a miss. etoo wouldnt be good as he is the same sort of player as torres. the most effective front pairing is like we have with gerrard and torres: one all out striker with a brilliant finish, and the other a hard working selfless striker whos main aim is to set up the other striker. this is where tevez is good. people moan that he doesnt score much. but u look how many he sets up and how much better united play when hes on the field
john - June 7th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
they seriously need to post more stuff coz im bored. any old half possible transfer rumour…just as a conversation point.
slicky4 - June 8th, 2009 at 2:46 am
C’MON PEOPLE………its all rumours, Transfers, our Budget, our Money Worries…….ALL SPECULATION…….MEDIA TALK.
MY SEASON OVERVIEW: we’ve had a very serious crack at the title this season, from being no-hopers…..yet LIVERPOOL get the most negative media coverage, by papers, radio, etc etc…..United didn’t win the title it was given to them…yeah they had their run of 1nils, some of it was luck and bad refs. More teams shouldn’t fear them and have a GO!!!!! At old trafford, stoke, wigan, bolton, boro, man city, west brom laid down and died. WE HAD A GO 1-4, blackburn, newcastle, everton had a go and were unlucky, oh and spurs….. trust me, they ain’t that good, theres nothing to fear if you get in their faces….stand off and let them play, you make them look good…..WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE????? who were they playing????? BARCA??? MADRID???? B.MUNICH???? nope nobodies from mexico…. yet its the best thing in the media…
Yes i know we got beat by SAO PAULO 1nil in 2005-6, but any LIVERPOOL fan that watched that game, knows we dominated and had at least 2 decent goals stricken off.
OUR cup TREBLE season 2001, is looked upon as insignificant, compared to uniteds 1999 treble(hmmmm yeah they won the league) but they didn’t have any serious competition in the league, f.a cup newcastle? Bayern Munich dicked them in the final. fresh faces got 2 lucky goals against a tired bayern team.
2005 3nil down at half time, shear grit and determination won the champions league that season, same as the F.A. cup final 2006…..BENITEZ started to build a winning mentality. This seasons squad isn’t as strong as the likes of man u, or chelsea, yet we beat them both twice. RAFA has installed that belief into a squad, already there in CARRA and STEVIE G,……we build the squad, not deplete it. The likes of Benayoun, Kuyt, Insua have stepped up to the plate and given their all. the likes of BABEL, LUCAS, DOSSENA, and RIERA have to learn that.
Riera id keep, the rest can go for me, UNLESS there is a serious improvement….the game today is a squad game, rotation and that. IF a player can’t cope with that, they should go. NO player is bigger than a team…. no matter how good you are. I bet Stevie G has sat there in the stands wondering why he ain’t playing, yet won the game the next time he’s played. THATS FOOTBALL!!!!!!!
James C - June 8th, 2009 at 3:59 am
Wingers! Liverpool NEED wingers. I hear lots of Downing, Lennon, Silva, BLAH. What about David Bentley??? Does anybody remember he had amongst the highest percentage rates in accurate passing and assist attempts in 07/08? So he had one bad season for Spurs. Keane had a shit season with us, that doesn’t mean he’s not quality. Because of fickle assesments on players’ current performances, we could get Bentley for as cheap as 8mil. How about Ashley Young? That guy is a nightmare on crosses. He almost singlehandedly beat CSKA in the first UEFA Cup game. I’ll take him over sell-out Barry any day. Plus, he’s a true winger. I don’t know why RAFA would want another CM. Is he collecting them till he builds a 10 man outfit of all holding mids? Pranjic is off to Bayern, Barry to MC, Johnson to Chelsea, Kerrison to probably Barca. RAFA buy Bentley and Ashley Young and we’d have the best complete front half in the world!

Carra Skrtel Agger Insua
Bentley Masch Xabi A. Young

Chris - June 8th, 2009 at 8:17 am
Maybe add another 10m and we have a chance for Eto’o…
Bentley – Attitude problem complete prick.
Lennon – Too inconsistent.
Downing – Not good enough.
There English but they dont cut it, end of story. We only need 2 players.
Silva
Johnson
Really should give Nemeth and Pacheco a chance, fergie did it and it paid dividends… twice in 2 games. Look at Jonny Evans, Da Silva twins and Macheda.
john - June 8th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
omfg everybody stop sayin eto’o wont go for 14 mil. its seriously a good price for him. he only has 1 year left on hes contract which means he pretty much at half value.
@chris: u might wana add eto’o to the list of people who wouldnt cut it if having an attitude problem means ur not gonna do any good.
