Wenger very close to signing experienced defender.
Arsenal have secured a €13 million (£11.4 million) deal for Ajax captain Thomas Vermaelen, according to reports in his native Belgium.
Arsene Wenger has been chasing the 23-year-old as he looks to strengthen his defensive options and has apparently now agreed a transfer fee with Ajax.
Het Laatste Nieuws reports that the two clubs reached an agreement on Saturday and that Vermaelen is now close to signing a four-year contract with The Gunners.

This deal was reportedly also sealed last week so it’s hard to know what to believe. The evidence does seem to point towards a very likely departure for the Belgian and Wenger is known to be a fan so this deal could well be close to completion.
Arsenal need some more solidity at the back and the 23 year old Ajax Captain can certainly help provide that, but of course it will be a big jump to make from the relatively average Eredivisie to the Premier League being one that takes some time to acclimatize to.
The centre back has become one of the best players in the Dutch league over the course of his six years at the Amsterdam arena. Aston Villa were also said to be tracking the player as a potential replacement for recently retired Martin Laursen.
Vermaelen to Arsenal: Yes this looks like a done deal.
