Tough tackling English Defender on west London wish-list.
With the impending departure of Ricardo Carvalho, Chelsea will need to strengthen their defence and are reportedly looking in the direction of Gary Cahill. The Bolton defender was called up to the England squad this week but Gary Megson is in no mood to let the 23-year-old leave easily – slapping a £20m price tag on his head.

Now I know that Roman Abramovich is a rich man, a very rich man, but he isn’t stupid! Gary Cahill is a very competent battler of a centre back who has come a long way from the youngster who’s career was stuttering at Aston Villa and the 23 year old made it into the recent England squad on the back of a consistent season at the Reebok, but there is no way he is worth even half the valuation on his shoulders.
Now if the valuation is there to scare off prospective suitors then fair enough, but it would surely be easier for Gary Megson to just say he is not for sale at all? Chelsea used a solid centre back pairing of Alex and John Terry throughout most of last season as Carvalho had a series of injuries keeping him out of the first team picture. Now it appears that the Portuguese International may well be about to rejoin Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan hence rumours such as these.
It’s a move that would perhaps be a dream one for Mr. Cahill but he would do well to remember the fates of other English players who made their way to the Stamford Bridge only to find themselves little more than bench warmers. Names such as Sidwell, Wright-Phillips, Parker and Glen Johnson immediately spring to mind as England stars of the future who all found it next to impossible to secure a extended run in the first team.
Cahill to Chelsea: Not going to happen and it could well be in the Sheffield lad’s best interest that such a move doesn’t in fact come to fruition.
