Liverpool Close to Securing Very Good £7m Player Swap Deal
by Steven Constable on June 8th, 2009 258 words | 17 commentsSeems like a good bit of business.
The Rumour
Juventus hope to land Liverpool fullback Andrea Dossena in a cash-plus-player swap.
Dossena has already gone public with his hopes of joining Juve this summer after failing to settle on Merseyside.
Juve chiefs Alessio Secco and Jean-Claude Blanc are preparing a bid of £4 million cash plus left-back Paolo de Ceglie in exchange for Dossena.

The Analysis
In the current financial climate I think we will start seeing a lot more player swap deals as club’s attempt to cut back on actual cash spending by freeing up squad members in lieu of sums of money. In this instance the swap in question greatly benefits Rafa Benitez.
After Andrea Dossena made it clear last week that he wished to leave Liverpool after a single troubled season there wasn’t much the boss could do but try to make the best of a bad situation. So if in this proposed deal the club gets cold hard cash as well as the impressive 22 year old left back De Ceglie then it’s a deal that will surely be sealed as soon as possible.
The sturdy full back has a smattering of Serie A performances but has shown enough to be a regular in the Italian Under 21 set-up and if Benitez believe he has potential then clearly such a deal is very much a winner for a club looking to bring in more and more up and coming talent.
The Likelihood
Dossena/DeCeglie Swap Deal: Seems eminently possible.

some cash and another left back and hes only 22 which gives him time to get even better iv saw him play a few times and hes a good player and if we get the 4mill and him he would only realy cost 3mil from the 7mill we paided for dossena last year and im sure if he doesnt make it in the prem we can get more than 3mill for him if we decide 2 sell him

Eff that. Dnt take the piss. Insua is 2nd choice left back!
matty - June 8th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Insua is 20 so he should eventually become our no.1, Aurelio is 29 after all so in 2 or 3 years Insua will be starting week in week out.

Great deal, the young guy has potential.

Would be a good deal if we didn’t already have Insua.

Insua is there, Aurelio can back up, I’m afraid this new Italian cant last the pace & robust of English game. Look at Dossena. He never settled in the game. Except for MU & RM game!

De Ceglie is very highly rated in Europe, but it would be more usefull if he was a right back!!

Bull shit! While i want dossena to go, we don’t need another crap player to add up to the wage expenses. Pls someone should tell me the latest on lucas. I’ve been waiting to hear that he has gone.
lfc eire - June 9th, 2009 at 11:36 am
no need to unsettle insua for someone older, not as good or as highly rated as him sell dossena for cash otherwise keep him.

hi my name is jack rigby (rigrat) and i think lucas and ngog are liverpools best players, if not the best in europe. ngog is brilliant at scoring goals with his pip head and lucas is good at passing. we must keep these players before somebody like real madrid offer 60mil for them.

9torres – June 9th, 2009 at 8:58 am ……….. Has a good point here are we not in need of a RB more than a LB????

Rafa has said we will only be making 1 or 2 signings. From the sounds of it he will be blowing the budget on 2 players who will enhance the first XI. To me this is good news and backs up the statement he made near the end of the season about adding quality and not quantity.
If he sells:
Dossena for £6m
Voronin for £4m
Babel for £8
Then add this to the £20m known to be available and we have a total budget of £38m plus there is the added benefit of the American’s having said that he has £20m to spend how he wishes, can increase his kitty by selling and can also appeal to the board for more funds should a player become available unexpectedly or an asking price has risen, aslong as he can make a compelling proposal.
Roughly £40m should buy us 2 players who can improve our 1st XI to the point where we are challenging for the title again at least.
p.s. Rafa did also say it would be possible we would break our transfer record this summer!
