Liverpool Ready to Make £12m Playmaker Summer Signing Number Two?
by Steven Constable on June 16th, 2009 333 words | 52 commentsAs one new addition looks set to move to Anfield another could be hot on his heels!
The Rumour
According to reports in the Turkish press Liverpool and Manchester United are gearing up for a battle for the exciting young Turkish winger Arda Turan this summer. The player is expected to leave Galatasaray with the club finishing a highly disappointing 5th in the Turkish league, 10 points behind champions Besiktas.
An added bonus for potential suitors of Arda is the player’s versatility as he can play on either flank or even in a more central role. Liverpool have been strongly linked to the golden boy of Turkish football as Rafa Benitez has been looking to add some much needed flair to his strong outfit.

The Analysis
It appears that Glen Johnson is almost in the bag (so to speak), but there is speculation mounting that Rafa Benitez is looking to add Arda Turan to his squad and will fight Man United tooth and nail to capture the talented young Turkish international.
The 22 year old Galatasaray playmaker is a very exciting young talent who has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham in recent months but many sources have claimed that if he is to move to the Premier League then it will be Sir Alex and Benitez most likely to capture him.
Even at his relatively young age he has racked up a good level of experience and has been impressive whilst on Champions League duty and was singled out as one of the top performers at last summer’s European Championships. He is an adaptable player who works well out on the left but can also play in midfield or in the pocket behind the strikers.
The Likelihood
Turan to Liverpool: A lot will depend on how much money Rafa is willing to pay because Man United of course have the new found wealth bestowed upon them from the huge Cristiano Ronaldo sale.

He would be a great signing but i would rather keep the money for David Silva.
Dom - June 16th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
No thanks. Let man u waste their money on him. We dnt have money to waste.
I would rather seesagnon than this guy. He just looks like a right footed riera.
we need to focus now on securing silva and a strikers signiture.
I honestly believe mascherano is going to leave paving the way for eto.
………………..riera
Johnson..cara..agger..aurelio
Kuyt…gerrard..alonso…silva
…………..torres..eto’o
Or 433 with silva up front
Paddy - June 16th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
I didn’t know Riera became a goalkeeper.
Dom - June 16th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
Reina sorry.
You knew what I meant.
Mark B - June 16th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Riera might be more use between the sticks!

Arda turan is the bollocks would be an outstanding capture.
mark - June 16th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
dom, why u think mascherano goes? benitez has told that he isen’t for sale. but i like ur formation. but i dont think it whould happen .. sry
dan - June 16th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
why u think masch is going, dom?
mark - June 16th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
sign ardan and Tuncay…bring back peter crouch …Crouch and Tuncay would make a great partnership..and then we still have torres and kyut, babel
DomDom - June 16th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Right. Mascherano is happy at anfield. However his wife is pregnant and can’t adapt to life in england. She has been out the country for a while and masch rarely sees her.
Mascherano feels she will feel better about moving to a spanish speaking country.
He also said that barcelona would a great club to play for.
Now… we have been link to eto for some time now. I feel that now alonso has been secured, rafa can afford to let masch go. Barca will offer eto and possibly cash for masch. It an offer to good to turn down.
I also feel rafa is searching for a world class striker, but may not have the funds to pay for one. He will have to consider it closely. Now we have johnson rafa may only have enough left to sign silva.
So eto to liverpool with masch going? Very likely and a postive deal all round.
………………..reina
Johnson..cara..agger..aurelio
Kuyt…gerrard..alonso…silva
………….torres… eto
That team will win 2 trophies guaranteed.
We need to keep babel and loan ngog. Keep riera and benayoun also. They can play bench
john - June 16th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
as i have said previously; hes wife should go screw herself. is she the one bringing home a week what it takes most people to earn in 5 years? no she isnt. so she should shut up and be grateful mascherano puts up with her nagging ass. i bet she doesnt even work.
john - June 16th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
forget villa, forget eto’o. i reckon we should sign katie price. shes english, for sale, not too expensive and is great up front not to mention she must have some skill on the ball with the amount of experience she has.
mark - June 16th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
ahh, thats true dom. if it comes true i would become very happy. but still, im not sure about it, though i hope it happens!
Dom - June 16th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
I would stop talking if I was you john. That’s the most ridiculas statement I have heard this year.
His wife will always come first. He will play fotball till he’s 33, but will be with his wife well into the 50’s.
Mascherano is too defensive. He slows play down. Great player, but if a deal to bring eto in is on. Id take it.
kc_accidental - June 17th, 2009 at 12:02 am
I would have to disagree and say that we need a player like Mascherano. He provides a great link between the back line and attack-oriented players. Alonso has more than enough passing ability to distribute the midfield, and with the sometimes unstable back four, it’s nice to have another player to pick up the slack when need be.
As far as Eto’o is concerned, despite the obvious goal-scoring prowess he possesses, there’s no need for Rafa to splash out that much money on another high-profile striker that will either sit on the bench or change a winning formation. There is absolutely no reason for Gerrard to push back into a central midfield role when he found so much success playing up front behind Torres. The Robbie Keane experiment didn’t work so well, I see no reason to upset a formation that has brought more success in the league than any other in a long while. Personally, I think an affordable, but dependable back-up striker is what Rafa needs to be looking for.

i like this guy turan i think he d make a welcome addition to our squad
Running Rafa - June 17th, 2009 at 1:39 am
Good good good!
I think he is perfectly suit for our squad, he has the ability to dribble and run very fast!
And I think 10-15m would be okay to finish the deal for him!
Mighty reds - June 17th, 2009 at 2:30 am
I hope u guys have seen enough of him to like him. Not just one game.
Rick - June 17th, 2009 at 2:31 am
Turan definitely turned some heads at Euro 08, but I wouldn’t pay much more than 12m for him unless we somehow have money left over for Silva. He’s too young and unproven to spend so much money on for a club that can’t afford too many mistakes financially or just overall (with regard to the title chase).
Anonymous - June 17th, 2009 at 3:00 am
D only reason Utd will battle liverpool 4 turan is 2 c how much liverpool will pay, fergie wnts liverpool 2 over-pay 4 turan so Utd can snap up silva, Utd will bail out wen liverpool bid an amount…
Triveni - June 17th, 2009 at 4:00 am
Dom, you are possibly mentally retarded. Mascherano is the best defensive midfielder in football. Repeat, the BEST. When Rafa says he isn’t letting Mascherano leave, he means Mascherano is not leaving. We had the most goals in the league last year. Our weakness was defense. Glen Johnson will help, but losing Mascherano for Eto’o? Do you really think that adding a striker and getting rid of the BEST defensive midfielder in the world will shore up the defense? Or are you just an idiot?
Turan is decent, but he has only played in Turkey. Give me someone more proven and I’ll be happier. I wouldn’t mind just keeping Riera and getting another centreback either.
Collin - June 17th, 2009 at 4:55 am
I feel both are very comparable to each other. I see both having an abundance of potential as they are highly skilled now, but I feel whoever Rafa can get cheaper is the main goal. Either way I can see both coming to the premier league next year one for Liverpool and the other to Man U.. lets hope ours does better!
Chris - June 17th, 2009 at 7:05 am
Silva or nothing for me. There is nobody else worthy to play alongside one of the best passers in the world, the best defensive midfielder in the world and one of the best attacking midfielders in the world at Anfield.
Proven players = Quality.
12m risks = Liability.
As for David Villa. This morning he said if he left Spain he would only come to Liverpool. Now if that isn’t a come and get me I have no idea what is.
My only thoughts of how we could fund this is buy selling,
Itandje – 1-2m
Lucas – 5-6m
Babel – 8-10m
This could roughly pick us up 15-18m. I would put money on the combined salary of these 3 being almost equal to Villa’s wage demands. The issue is where do we find the other 17m and how?
Perhaps its possible half now and half next season? We shall see. But one thing is for sure if we could pull this off my new shirt will definitely have Villa on
Access uko - June 17th, 2009 at 7:23 am
Dom d was thing that can hapen is to let masch to go bcos Gerrard cant play midfield Gerr-alonso.lucas-Gerrd is not a goog pair.u can touch a wining team our midfield is okay except lucas
kermit - June 17th, 2009 at 9:04 am
if a guy can perfomr well at an international ournament like the euros then he is good enough for me
see arshavin at arsenal
tuncay actually did reALLY WELL AT THE EUROS TOO
and i wouldnt mind him in our squad either
and to triveni masch is possibly the best defensive midfielder in the world but do we need defensive midfielders at hom to stoke
and to chris is silva poroven inthe premier league no, he is a fucking weakling and would get booted all over most premiership grounds, he is skilful and i hopwe if we sign him i am proven wrong but i dont think he can cut it
Guillem - June 17th, 2009 at 9:27 am
Hey Dom I love the way you make up stories.
I heard Kyut’s dog (although raised in Holland) really likes Liverpool but his bark has suffered serious setbacks and he can’t help but yelp instead of unleashing the deep woof Dirk got him for. This has upset all the Kuyt’s and Dirk’s wife has said she would prefer to move to a country were there dog can bark freely again. Rafa understands this and is in talks with Barca over a swap deal involving Messi.
Chris - June 17th, 2009 at 9:29 am
Kermit… have you ever watched Spain or Valencia? Or are you jumping on the band wagon like a couple of others who think the size of Silva is going to matter.
Read what you wrote in your post you contradicted yourself totally.
livebird09 - June 17th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Guys, our squad is perfect. You saw the last 5 games we played and we were unbeatable. Our lads arent playing with just skills, they are playing with they hearts and thats why we are gonna win the EPL. Players like Arbeloa dont deserve to play for Liverpool and thats why he need to go. We just needed the RB to win the EPL.
Anonymous - June 17th, 2009 at 10:39 am
Treveni, no doubt he is the best at what he does, but to be honest, there’s only 4 or 5 teams we need him against. The rest we are expected to beat. Yet rafa still plays 2 dm against the likes of stoke? Wtf. You guys need to wake up, we need another quality striker. If torres gets injured all season, u really gonna wanna see tuncay play upfront lol ahahaha no! If we are to lose masch, which I think is likely now that messi has stated he would be gr8 for the club, then id rather lose him for a striker who is going to score 20plus goals per season. It doesn’t matter how many clean sheets we keep if we can’t score. We need quality, not cheap solutions.
Guilem; yes I made up that whole story! Are you ignorant or just completely stupid. It has been stated more than once.
We will see what happens, till then we all have opinions which we disagree on.
rick 1001 - June 17th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Personally, i think rafa should let alonso go to madrid then we get sneider & saviola plus 10 million in return. Dossena, Intandje and Voronin can all go. With such transaction we can afford to bring in silva.
Case closed.
Irish scouser - June 17th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
guillem that was quality stuff nothing better than a good laugh.
dom it is obivous that you didn’t put down your name for the last anonymous post because you are so shamefull about that so called masherano family issues post you sent it .
I think that tuncay would do well for 1 or 2 weeks by himself up front if torres got injured (i say 1 or 2 weeks because I am praying that torres doesn’t pick up injures this year). Tuncay did well last season with a struggling boro, kuyt, gerrard and alonso would certainly raise his game
madrid are now trying to sell a couple of players after their phrase of being linked with everything that moves.
snjeder is a very good player and i would hope if he joined us that he would play left winger
silva is too lightweight andis too overrated he was poor at the euro’s aswell
johnson hopefully bought at this stage.
I reckon we would be prem champions and again cheers guillem for your funny post

I quite like the sound of this. Although I would much prefer that we only proceed if Silva’s services cannot be aquired.
With an already large contingency of spanish players at the club I feel David Silva would be better placed to adapt to the squad aswell as the league.
Turan is a good player and meets the requirements positionally that, if the rumours on Johnsons imminent transfer are true, we still need to adress.
Both players have very similar gifts, frames and bright futures ahead of them but I feel that Silva has a little more to offer right now.
Twelve million for a very versatile and silky young talent is still very tempting.
Dm - June 17th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Masch came out on skysports.com and made the statemments himself. How am I gna make it up?
redryan - June 17th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Maybe we should try a straight swap with babel and hope to have enough left in the coffers to still get silva.
Just a thought.
Calvo - June 17th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Would be happy if Utd signed this player as I dont think it would be a waste of money. At the quoted price and for the age and experience he already has.
His performances have been impressive and during the Euros he was very prominent for Turkey.
Considering the prices bandied about for players like Downing etc Arda would be a better choice.
fact - June 17th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Arda Turan is a great prospect and i hope liverpool sign him only then will most of you fantasy managers realise what a cracking player he is. All this non stop talk of silva is quite irritating anyone would think he was MARADONA for gods sake. Silva is superb but their are others, open your eyes.
Y.N.W.A - June 17th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
The storie about Mascherano wife is true and she has spoke to him and said she would prefer to live in a spanish speaking country so Masch is debating what to do but there have been reports his agent is in Barcalona which i hope is not true as Masch is one of the best defensive Midfielders in the world.
the reports of David Villa wanting to come to Liverpool if he were to leave Spain would be great if we had the cash to fund his transfer, although i would be unsure whether Rafa would change his formation.
Arda Turan is a good player who has impressed many of the big clubs with his perfomances in Euro’s, he seems to have good skill, pace, ability to cross ball and shoot on target unlike many others so he would be a good signing in my eyes if we were to get money for Masch.
Liverpool have supposedly been given £25 million + sales to spend which reportedly Johnson is agreeing terms for £17 million (of which Liverpool will pay 10 mil due to 7 mil stil being owed for crouch) leaving 17 million which hopefully wil be put towards Silva as he is also a quality player.
With the RB and the wing positions sorted, i think Rafa should look to a striker, a\ proven goalscorer who i think could be tevez but there are many others, negrado, villa, eto.
Don’t know what ev1 else thinks but everyone has their own opinions just sharing mine
RedPete - June 17th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
In response to Y.N.W.A. Guys, am I the only one that thinks a move for Tevez would be more disasterous than the Keane signing? Dont get me wrong, I rate Tevez as a player, but I just do not see him as the type of player that will fit into the winning formation Rafa has created. In the same way that Keane came in and upset the balance, Tevez would do the same thing. Both players are far too similar to Kuyt. I love what Kuyt does, always running and working for the team, and I feel that is an absolutely vital ingredient, but only on one side of the pitch. What we lack is silky creativity, the sort of creativity that is gonna break down the likes of Stoke when our usual powerhouse up-and-at-em approach is not working. It seems to me that Rafa wants to have Johnson running up the wing delivering quality crosses with Kuyt going up and down covering as is his way. If that is the right side, the left side has to be where we are prepared to take players on and dribble the ball into the box. This two pronged attack combined with what Stevie and Xabi give us from the middle would be enough to break anyone down. You throw Tevez into the mix and all you are doing is restricting our midfield and taking away that creativity that we lack on the left side. We need a target striker to compliment Nando not a Jack Russell snapping at peoples feet. I cannot for the life of me see what Rafa thinks Tevez will add to the squad. Other than this, he doesnt score enough goals, and wont be prepared to sit on the bench waiting for Nando to get injured. Anyone else agree with what im saying/
RedPete - June 17th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Oh and by the way, for £25-30 mil, we could get someone much more suited to the squad than Tevez. We only payed £22M for Nando for gods sake. Please god tell me that Rafa is only showing interest to push his price up and piss off whiskey nose!
kermit - June 17th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
i watched silva be totally overhyped at the euos last summer not be outstanding by any manner, top players perform in top tournaments and david silva just didnt he gave the ball away loads, and its not just its size i think he is weak mentally, i hope i am wrong if we siogn him but i d rather not have him there
tren - June 18th, 2009 at 12:20 am
get lennon, johnson, saviola
Fearon - June 18th, 2009 at 10:19 am
People slag Silva but every great team has a little magician and he could be ours. Game in game out he might not always be 10 out of 10 but when we have a stubborn defence fighting for their lives at Anfield this boy could unlock doors that previously we have failed to open. Silva, Torres, Gerrard, Kuyt is an extremely skillfull, talented, intelligent, pacey and WORLD CLASS attacking force. Combine that with Glenn Johnson overlapping the infield cutting Kuyt and we mean business.
Silva or Villa and the premierleague will be ours! (if we’ve nailed the Johnson deal)

This whole silva saga is annoying. He wud be a gd edition. But personally I dnt think thers much between him and riera.
Big George - June 18th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
I’ve watched a couple of months the second match between Turkey-Spain in Istanbul when I was on vacation. I kept myself busy with Turkish football for the last couple of years thanks to some Turkish lads. This kid is golden.
Even though Silva,Xavi, Cazorla and highly offensive S.Ramos all played in that game, it was Turkey’s Arda who was the most impressive of them. He simply destroyed Ramos. Also what impressed me was Turkey’s rightback/winger Gonul. He destroyed the right flank of Spain in that game.
I think you guys should not think Arda isn’t as good as people say he is purely ’cause he plays in the Turkish league. There are some very good, talented players there who can definitly keep up in the premier league or any other. But at a Turkish topclub you can get the same salary and even higher then in many European top leagues. So going outside is less attractive for them. Also the fact that they are not EU citizens gives them a disadvantage.
But one thing I’d like to ad is, is that Arda is NOT the golden boy of Turkish Super league. Followers of the league know this. Players from Anatolian clubs hardly get to chance to show themselves, unless they are transferd to the Istanbul clubs or get a chance to play in the national squad. Fenerbahce has recently transferd 22 year old versitle Ankasaspor attacking midfielder/winger Ozer Hurmaci. This kid is BETTER then Arda in every possible way. But because he played for a lower team, Ankaraspor he was hardly known by foreigners.
Cheers.

We are frustratingly slow in the transfer market. And most of the time we aren’t buying exciting players, just cheap solutuions, like this ardu guy.
I’m sick of all the pennants, and voronins and gonzales’ etc.
The only real exciting player we have baught as of recent is torres.
Although I was excited about reira and babel.
How rafa can justify spendin 17mil on johnson when he still needs a world class striker and a winger perplexes me.
