Deal almost done!
THOMAS VERMAELEN has hailed his £10million move to Arsenal as a childhood dream come true.
The Ajax centre-half is Gunners’ boss Arsene Wenger’s first big-money summer signing – as exclusively revealed by SunSport on June 4.
The Belgian international, 23, has agreed a four-year deal worth £50,000 a week and will have a medical today.
Delighted Vermaelen said: “This is one of the most beautiful days of my life.
“When a club like Arsenal knocks at your door, you just go.
“I am so proud to be signing for Arsenal. They are a fantastic club and I have enjoyed watching them since I was a child.
“Arsene Wenger stands for good, attacking football and dares to work with young talent. That appeals to me enormously.
“I’ll be up against the best strikers in the world but I am not scared by that. I will give all my body can give.”
Arsenal boss Wenger landed his man with a quick phone call.
Vermaelen said: “I went on holiday to Spain and suddenly a British number appeared on my mobile phone. It was Arsene Wenger.

Whilst it would be wrong to believe this deal as completely done, it does seem 99% certain that the Ajax captain will complete his deal to become Arsene Wenger’s first summer signing within the next day or two. The club needed some freshness at the back, especially with Kolo Toure still apparently keen to leave the club, and Thomas Vermaelen is a good player with a bright future.
It’s good to see that the Belgian is chuffed with the move and clearly he will be hoping to make a smooth jump from the Dutch Eredivisie to the Premier League, but it won’t be easy. Without wishing to denigrate Holland’s top tier, it is important to note that it is a league that is very much on a par with the SPL but Gunners fans will be hoping that the centre back helps solidify the Arsenal back line.
