Liverpool Show Passing Interest in £15m Premier League Centre Back
by Steven Constable on June 19th, 2009 222 words | 10 commentsDoes such a move make sense…not really!
The Rumour
West Ham United are ready to sell defender Matthew Upson for £15 million.
The Sun says the Hammers are resigned to losing the England centre-half this summer, with Manchester City favourites to sign him.
Upson, 30, has dropped heavy hints he wants to join a bigger club in the run-up to next summer’s World Cup finals — and his Hertfordshire house is up for sale.
England boss Fabio Capello has also advised Upson he should be playing at the highest level possible to boost his chances of making the squad for South Africa.
Arsenal and Liverpool are expressing passing interest in Upson but ambitious City lead the way.

The Analysis
Does Rafa need to invest so heavily in another centre back, probably not. With Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher currently the first choice partnership and with the very capable Daniel Agger as cover the club probably only need a veteran experienced campaigner in case of serious injury concerns, that is why Benitez was looking at Sylvain Distin as a potential signing.
Matthew Upson is a good player and probably at the peak of his powers but given that Liverpool do not have money to burn a move of this kind really makes no sense.
The Likelihood
Upson to Liverpool: Nope

Dont understand why we’d want him and why he’d want to come. He wont play each week, possibly not even every other week. Its a world cup year and he wants to be in the squad. no chance if he isn’t playing. Think this may just be more “i need to sell more papers so i’ll write whatever guff i can think of” journalism.
Top, Top Drawer.

I do think Upson is a very good centre back but he is coming 30 now which is a bit old so i would rather buy Richards who is a relly really good versatile player plus he is English and is only 22 or else Raul Albiol who is one of the best up and coming centre backs who can also play as a defensive midfielder and is only 24.So i would say no to Upson but yes to one of them 2.

not bad but too old albiol proven and versatile richards needs to prove himself not good enough for man city hes young but definetly not good enough for liverpool
