Could Benitez turn to this youngster if he has to sell either of his star performers?
There are a number of Premier League clubs in the race to sign Standard Liege’s Belgian starlet Steven Defour this summer. Liverpool were thought to have jumped to the head of the queue after impending rumours of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano’s likely exits. However, Everton have reportedly had a bid rejected for the exciting player and Aston Villa have been long-term suitors. There’s likely there’ll be a bidding war waged for the young playmaker due to the player being linked to at least 7 Premier League clubs.

Perhaps Everton’s loss can be Liverpool‘s gain? If Rafa does end up losing either of his two midfield stars, and it could happen, then a crafty move for this Belgian battler would be a very good one in my view. The 21 year old Standard Liege man has all the makings of being a very bright star.
He has been in fantastic form these past two seasons helping his side to the domestic title in successive seasons and he played marvelously in the club’s fixtures against both Mersey outfits a couple of years back. Clearly Liege want to get as much as they can for him, and are holding out for a big transfer and why not. I for one was at first shocked by how much the Toffees paid for Defour’s former teammate Fellaini but it has proven to be a smart buy from David Moyes.
Defour is one for the future and has the kind of talent and vision that could suit Benitez well and perhaps even if the club does manage to keep hold of both Xabi and Javier, he could still somehow find the cash to make a move for the Standard Liege captain.
Defour to Liverpool: Would be a good move and there are many Premier League teams fighting for his signature.
