Real come calling again!
Real Madrid have made a renewed bid for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso and expect to sign him in a £30million deal.
The move comes just hours after Liverpool agreed a £17m deal for Portsmouth full-back Glen Johnson ahead of competition from Chelsea. And that will signal the £8million departure of Alvaro Arbeloa to Real Madrid too.
Real’s pursuit of Alonso has been dogged. They made an approach for the Spain midfielder last month and tabled a £20m offer but Liverpool were reluctant to sell.
Benitez will now concentrate on trying to keep Javier Mascherano, despite Barcelona’s interest, and will use the funds from Alonso’s transfer to continue re-building his team.

This source makes this sound like a done deal, and whilst I wouldn’t go that far, the signs are pointing towards a likely departure of either Mascherano or Alonso and it appears that many believe Benitez will fight for Javier and allow Xabi to leave the club.
Last summer Rafa appeared ready to let the Spaniard leave to help fund a move for Gareth Barry that never went through and Alonso’s proposed move to Juventus fell through and as a result he had a great season and seemed to be happy to stay at the club, but perhaps he was disheartened in the way that his boss then went for the former Aston Villa man again and that could well have been the final straw that broke the camel’s back.
And whilst Liverpool put out an official statement saying that he wasn’t for sale this has stopped speculation surrounding the player’s Anfield future.
Alonso and Arbeloa to leave Liverpool: It is looking increasingly likely this could happen.
