O’Neill considers move for veteran centre back with bags of experience.
The Rumour
MARTIN O’NEILL is considering a shock move to sign Sol Campbell on a free.
The Aston Villa boss needs an experienced centre-back after seeing Martin Laursen, 31, retire through injury.
Campbell, 34, has been offered a new deal to stay at Portsmouth on reduced wages of around £40,000 a week.
But the prospect of playing Europa League football with Villa next season is the big pull.

The Analysis
Martin O’Neill is a shrewd businessman when it comes to transfer policy and the Aston Villa boss rarely pays over the odds and does quite often find a bargain or two and should he clinch this signing it would be a top notch one.
Sol Campbell may well be getting on a bit but it’s worth noting that he has racked up 100+ starts in his three seasons at Fratton Park and is therefore not suffering from injury concerns that you would normally associate with a 30+ year old defender.
Some people have speculated that the former England man would be looking for a move abroad but it seems more likely he would stick it out in the Premier League and a move to a top six club like Aston Villa may well be right up his street.
The Likelihood
Campbell to Aston Villa: I can see this one happening.
