Chelsea are closing in on a £4m deal for Charlton’s 17-year-old forward Jonjo Shelvey, who is also being tracked by Newcastle, Tottenham and West Ham.

The Analysis

The progress and potential shown by teenager Shelvey was possibly the only bright spot in Charlton’s ignominious relegation to League One. Jonjo was thrown in at the deep end and due to the club’s financial fortunes was probably handed far more pitch time than he would originally have expected.

The 17 year old ended up featuring in 20 plus games last term and in that time impressed many with his intelligent lively performances and was soon being courted by most top flight scouts and now that the south London club has fallen to the third strata of the league it seems far more likely that he would seek his fortune elsewhere, which could in fact be a mistake.

One can’t help but feel that if he joined Chelsea he would soon be lost amongst the scores of talents both in the first team set up and in the reserves this is a fate that would be slightly narrowed at the other clubs mentioned and perhaps a move to St James’ Park would be the best in terms of a more healthy progression path.

The Likelihood

Shelvey to leave Charlton: Seems likely as his club could do with the cash injection but in many ways he could benefit from sticking it out and trying to get the former Premier League club back on track.
