Liverpool Close In On £11m ‘No Nonsense’ Midfielder as Mascherano Replacement
by Steven Constable on June 29th, 2009 288 words | 31 commentsThis source believes Rafa is planning for the worst!
The Rumour
A number of top Premier League clubs have been linked to one of the stars of French football…the Albanian midfielder Lorik Cana this summer. The list of reported admirers for the Marseille captain includes Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool and Tottenham.
Cana is a 25-year-old defensive midfielder with a reputation as a hard man in French football after numerous booking and red cards following his 7-season spell in France for both PSG and Marseille. The 6 ft 1 star is a cult figure at the Stade Velodrome for his no-nonsense displays and is more than physically equipped for English football.

The Analysis
Many sources seem to believe that Javier Mascherano, as well as Xabi Alonso, may well have played their last games for Liverpool, and it’s a rumour that I think people are getting a little carried away with but at the same time it wouldn’t surprise me if Rafa was keeping his options open by considering potential signings to replace two players who would be very hard to cope without.
Lorik Cana is a tough customer who has a no nonsense style that belies the ability he does possess when needed to play the ball out from defense and link to the attack. He is a solid player who appears ready to call time on his time in France and Liverpool are said to be one of the front runners for the former PSG player, but only of course if they lose either of their talismanic midfielders.
The Likelihood
Cana to Liverpool: Will only become relevant if the club loses Mascherano which Rafa will fight tooth and nail to avoid!

Would sooner use Jay Spearing as a replacement of Javier Mascherano…. He may not have Masch’s enrgy levels but he still puts himself about and gives us a better attacking option, and you know he is at the club he wishes to be at. A great little player in the making this one.
Ash T - June 30th, 2009 at 12:59 am
true donavan we need to start using some of our youth players

In case Marsch and alonso will be gone…buy lorik cana + mesut ozil.cana is a phisically player.a tough centre half.ozil in the other hand is attacking oriented midfielder.this will support gerrard and torres in the up front.ozil is the palyer that got this kind of mentality.then we got riera on the flanker and kuyt with johnson that coverd him.in centre defend we got carra agger with skrtel ready to roll anytime we need.seemingly insua will develope into the player that we want for.just buy another forward to cover torres.it goes like this…..
reina
glen carra agger insua
kuyt cana ozil riera
gerrard
torres

No truth in this story! First he won’t be on the market for mere 11 million pounds. Wake up. If Marseille knows Liverpool is selling Masch for 35 or 50 million, they will milk every single quid out of Liverpool. It would be more like 28-25 million at least! He may not worth that value but that’s how it will be. Besides guys, go back to the official line. Rafa and LFC already issued an official line that Masch is not for sale. What more do you want? So at least for the moment, just ignore those rumours until there is an actual real bid for him. Let’s not forget, there is nothing wrong for Rafa to reinforce further the midfield and Cana could be an option. Getting him doesn’t mean automatically mean Masch’s departure is imminent. Who knows – it could be Lucas? Who knows, Rafa sees him as a great back up to the squad if Masch gets injured? Really nobody knows. So relax.

Get Sisoko back if Marchrano leaves.
End of Story.
Every top team needs a defensive midfielder especially the way Liverpool plays.
Bottom line we will be in trouble if either Alonso or Marcha leaves.
Alonso for being the best passer of a ball in the league.
Marcha for seeing trouble before it begins.
Hope Rafa can convince both of them to stay.

Alosno and Masch are gone…. deals have been struck. Rafa is going to waste money on likes of Joe Cole and other rejects just to get English quota up

do you not watch us in the CL matey? Cana is a very good player but i agree that we should use Spearing in the Mascherano role if he does go, he has great energy and drive, can shoot from distance and is a superd passer, plus he neve shirks a tackle!

The feeds that I’m getting indicate that Spurs are ahead of us on this one. Not say we won’t land him but Spurs are just further down the road.
-lfc- - June 30th, 2009 at 10:14 am
i could see him playing at anfield in a red shirt
kermit - June 30th, 2009 at 10:41 am
oh marseille i did watch those games but he didnt particularly stand out to me, jay spearing , i dunno as a direct replacement , maybe if he is given games this year , but to ask him to step directly ito the breach now with merely a handful of senior matches would be a big ask
plus masch won t leave , i personally think all this leaving talk is a way of him getting a raised deal , apparently he is on about 30 000 a week , pittance compared to other stars
kermit - June 30th, 2009 at 10:45 am
i think lucas is gonna have a big year this year and i havent written off dossena yet either and i m certain torres is gonna hit more than thirty goals this season
xabi alonso won t leave either

ronaldhino just for the sheer madness of it

Maybe a sneaky bid for Essien looks like an honest player.Plus he is under 30 does not fit into Chelseas over 30 squad.
Though we might not be able to afford him.
Seeing that we all in fanatasy land as to who we want.
Essien the only player or like i said earlier Sisoko back at Anfield.
Chelsea > Liverpool - June 30th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
