Liverpool Set for £25m Midfielder Bid: What Should Rafa Do?
by Mr Comfort on July 2nd, 2009 104 commentsWorrying development in ongoing transfer saga!
The Rumour
Rafa Benitez’s transfer plans could be thrown into chaos by a £25million bid from Barcelona for Javier Mascherano.
The Champions League holders are refusing to give up their pursuit of the Liverpool midfielder and are ready to test Benitez’s resolve with a concrete offer.
Sources close to the Argentina international say he would be interested in speaking to Barcelona who are willing to hand him a huge pay rise from £25,000-a-week to over £80,000-a-week.
The £25m fee would help finance Benitez’s rebuilding work at Anfield, but he can’t afford to let Mascherano leave with Xabi Alonso set to join Real Madrid.
The Reds boss will rebuff any bid from Barca, although he may have to hand Mascherano improved terms to keep him happy.
The Source: (Daily Mirror)
The Analysis
So it appears Barcelona are set to stop the messing about and actually put a bid in for Javier Mascherano, which is sure to get short shrift from Rafa Benitez, but will the Argentine have his head turned by the prospect of such a move?
Liverpool fans will be hoping that their battling midfielder is intending to do an “Eto’” and simply use such speculation to get himself a better contract but there is a very real possibility that he may push for the move. His wife apparently doesn’t like life in England and fancies a move to Spain, why can’t Mascherano do a Vidic and simply ignore his missus and stick it out on Merseyside?

What should Rafa do ? Tell them to **** off ! £25m ? that’d just about pay for Masch’s boots. Give him a pay rise and, like Vidic has, get him to tell his misses to spend some more time shopping.
How many DMs do Barca want, by the way – Toure, Busquets and now Masch ? I’d have thought they’d be looking to spend their money on a Silva type who can replace the ageing Thierry

keep him if possible
if not 25 and bojan or toure

£25M is an insult. If they offer £25M + Bojan, then I’d be tempted. No Bojan in the deal then £40M.
With this potential £40M we could but Javi Martinez (£12M), Michael Johnson (£8M), Micah Richards (£8M) and the last piece of the jigsaw DAVID SILVA (£25M).
This leaves a £13M deficit which would be covered by Arbeloa to Madrid £6M, Leto £3M and a few fringe players.
I know this leaves us with only 1 holding player in Alonso, but if we switch to 4-1-3-1-1 / 4-1-3-2 we would only need 1 holding player.
Burton - July 2nd, 2009 at 11:07 am
I say keep hold to him as long as we can but if he decides to sell him £25 mil plus bojan.

THE BIG I AM - July 2nd, 2009 at 11:30 am
we shouldent agree to anythin below 45-50 mill mascha is under contract with us so we dont need to accept any bid ! ! ! we want to keep him obviously hes our best holding player and barca know this so they should know its gonna cost!!! but if rafa has any sense hell offer mascha an improved contract . . . and then to barcelona say nothing below 40 mill and anything that is below 40 mill bojan has to be a part of. when they already have two holding players this sort of attitude could put them off and if it dosent then that sort of money could easily get a replcement holding player.
Big G - July 2nd, 2009 at 11:31 am
Look its going to be Alonso who goes not Mascher!! The lad wants to stay here its just his wages dont match his worth to the team!! Lets be honest although footy players are paid far too much compared to the rest of the market Maschers getting bumped!!! 25k a week for the best defensive mid in the world!! As Rafa said 50M wouldn’t be enough to sell him!!!! Alonso to Madrid for 28M to be replaced by Javi Martinez for 14M and Mascher to sign a new contract his missus will be back here after shes had the baby too!!
Lincoln burrows - July 2nd, 2009 at 11:37 am
I can’t believe some folks here are calling for bojan. Pls spend time and watch that lad, he’s shite. All he does is run around the pitch without really doing anything.

Have any of you heard anything about Liverpool lodging a bid for Silva?? I’ve heard we’ve bid 22M for him!?!?!?

Lincoln burrows the real - July 2nd, 2009 at 11:45 am
Now trust me in this one. Masch is not going anywhere! He’s just signed a new contract for liverpool. Lincoln burrows has just been employed by COS. So expect more of fake news.
Alonso has just signed a five year contract with real. Villa left for anfield 30mins ago on his private jet. So lets just march out to welcome him!!
Ronaldinho has agreed to join liverpool on a pay as you play. Wait for more updates.
THE BIG I AM - July 2nd, 2009 at 11:46 am
Lincoln burrows – that would be cos hes only 18 . . . not every player has to be a genious before a top 4 club signs him lol its cos hes got potential and anyway barca probs wouldent agree to have him in a deal as they rate him for the future . . .
Big G – iv not heard anything bout silva . . . were did u find out we could av put a bid in for him ?
Lincoln burrows - July 2nd, 2009 at 11:54 am
Big G- we don’t need a player for the future. We need players that would make us win everything this season and bojan is simply not one of them. Poor vision, faulty passes, indecision, and gives away possession too often. We don’t need him. Those calling for him have probably watched this lad twice. Just like if you watched lucas against newcastle, you will conclude that he is the best midfielder in the world. He’s shite
Big G - July 2nd, 2009 at 11:56 am
My mate is good friends with one of the coaches at Melwood he’s given us a good few players names in the past that have signed and reckons we tabled a new bid of 22m for him over the weekend they had previously rejected 18m!?!?!?

fk off barca 25m for mascherano? 57m for fkin kaka who is overated i reckon mascherano is worth at least 45 million but i dont blame him if he does want to leave 25k a week voronin was on 35k lol and hes shocking and whoever said to buy robinho we dont want him hes the type of player who thinks hes bigger than the club i think we will keep mascherano and alonso and i think there will be 1 big signing and a few youngsters coming in i hope its aguero or silva lol doubt it will be aguero but its getting better for us as united are loosing there targets i think whoever united go for we should put in a cheeky bid just to piss off fergie but then pull out of it at the end lol

Let’s say we did agree a fee for masch, would any of ye think that the following formation might work,
Reina
Johnson, Carra, Skyrtel, Insua
Agger , Alonso ( our new DFM partnership)
Etc, Etc, Etc
Does any of ye think that Agger might be a good candidate for a DFM role based on his good footballing ability, passing and shooting???????????? which by the way would be far better than Masch’s.
Just a thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
weirpig - July 2nd, 2009 at 12:16 pm
we dont need no arabs, and to be honest im not to bothered if either alonso or masch leave anfield they are replaceable although to hear some peoples comments they arent. if we get 50 million for these two i believe its good business lets remember alonso has had one good season which as inflated his price by over 10 million pounds sell him get someone in who can dectate the game from midfield and whoisnt afraid to run forward with the ball as opposed to sidewards.the future looks bright without these pair regardless whether they leave or not

Hi all,
Yeah…Masch is not going anywhere. I have a sneaking suspicion that Alonso will eventually stay. Now with Benzema having signed for Real, I would be surprise if they could still fork out more ginormous purchases. Besides Alonso just signed a new contract last year which means Rafa is in the driving seat to drive hard bargain. If they can’t pay, they will just get lost and shut up. Alonso will just buckle down and play.
And yes….Bojan is crap. DO NOT GET HIM!
Paddy - July 2nd, 2009 at 12:52 pm
If Alonso Goes he has to stay but if Alonso stays he can go for 35 million+!!!!!
MIKE - July 2nd, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Steve McMahon, Dom – i don’t think Agger is good enough to play in midfield – he doesn’t have the engine to do all the running masch does, plus his touch is great, for a center back – average at best for a center mid.
MIKE - July 2nd, 2009 at 1:12 pm
On to Bojan – just coz he’s played for Barca, has good skills and is young doesn’t make him the next big attacking talent – just look at Giovani (the Mexican lad at spurs). he was ahead of Bojan in the pecking order two season ago.
saggy - July 2nd, 2009 at 1:12 pm
thank you mike agger centre mid !!! dom you are a mug
Steve McMahon - July 2nd, 2009 at 1:18 pm
MIKE – July 2nd, 2009 at 1:10 pm
And how do you rate Masch’s touch & shooting ????????????
Also pls keep in mind that one of the reasons masch does so much running is to try and get the ball back that he has just given away.
I like masch but he is not as good a footballer as Agger and if Masch used his brain a little more then maybe all the running he does would not be required????????
Also I would personally play Agger against any team with him as a DFM in this 4 2 3 1 formation, but would you play Masch in every game against the so called lesser teams????????? bearing in mind that we still play 4 2 3 1 no matter who we play, AC Milan or Bolton. Masch is great against top teams but he is very limited against lesser teams.
What do you think????????
Steve McMahon - July 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 pm
MIKE – July 2nd, 2009 at 1:12 pm
just look at Giovani (the Mexican lad at spurs). he was ahead of Bojan in the pecking order two season ago.
You mean like Masch when he signed for West Ham and couldnt get a game????????????
Personally Giovanni is just at the wrong club, he is far better than what he has been let show in the EPL due to lack of first team football.

saggy – July 2nd, 2009 at 1:23 pm
“god im surrounded by imbreds…”
by the way the word in” inbreds”
now
Chill you plank, it’s just an idea, Masch has a piss poor first touch, no questions asked, he cant pass anymore than 5 yards, he cant shoot, he has a volatile temper, he cant head a ball, but he can run around for 90 minutes and destroy the best midfields in the world with his tackling, and no one is arguring the point.
The point I am making is that aside from Europe and the other top 4 or 5 clubs in the EPL, playing Masch against teams with 10 or 11 men planked in their own half is silly at best due to his limitations. Agger has more to his game, and playing against the so called lesser teams was our big issue last year, we didnt have an issue against the top sides.
This may be a little too much for you to take in all at once, but hopefully you will figure it out in due course.
Steve McMahon - July 2nd, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Oh and your Reina comment is just stupid, at best.
Dom - July 2nd, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Im not saying HE SHOULD be played in DM, but it could work as he is a very attacking defender.
And as it goes, i dont see you posting your opinion about proceedings.
Chris - July 2nd, 2009 at 1:51 pm
They already bid £25m and it was rejected, get up to date “Mr Comfort” your like 3-4 days behind.
Same for Alonso Real bid £17m about a week or two ago, Rafa would probably seen that more of an insult than a genuine offer.
Keep your hair on guys neither are going anywhere.
saggy - July 2nd, 2009 at 1:51 pm
yes your right agger is going to carve open the oposition with his creative passing and touches of flair in that congested midfield area. we need not worry about the likes of stoke and hull getting 10 men behind the ball because one touch of genius from agger will see us alright…… Now back to the real world LEAVE AGGER WE HE PLAYS BEST

DM, if we did sell Masch, for let’s say 27 mill and we could get Silva + poss 1 other, personally I would be happy enough to start the season with the following,
Reina
Johnson , Carra, Skyrtel, Insua
Agger , Alonso
Silva, Gerrard, Riera
Torres
Bench,
Babel, Aurellio, Arbolea, Kuyt, Nemeth (Spelling), Yossi, Ngog, Plessis, Spearing, etc, etc
Although personally I would rather see us play with at least 2 strikers up front against the lesser teams.

Can we get back to discussing football please?
I for one do think that masch will go this season prob for around 30 million dont know if this was on the horizon when barry went to city but he would have been a good replacement . lets look at our options for filling that position
1 damien plessis
2 daniel agger
3 lucas
4 jay spearing
5 change formation and go with 2 up top
me personally i would go with the later drop gerrard into centre mid and buy another forward ideal for home games were we have been losing points
just an idea but i wouldnt mind a sneeky punt for ebanks blake from wolves i think he is a great prospect and english . not sure what this facination is with foreign stars
Steve The Bear - July 2nd, 2009 at 2:45 pm

steve mcmahon, i like your squad, and i agree with the point u made about a striker, but if barcelona want him so badly, and he is still contracted with us, we should hold out for a massive bid, so then we can use the money to buy a decent striker to partner torres or be on the bench

Steve McMahon - July 2nd, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Yeah sure, the more we get the better, but Barca are not in Madrid’s looney league when it comes to spending, and if it was Madrid after Masch then the possability of getting more than 27 mill would be more likely.
Barca have YaYa Toure who has just penned a new deal at the Nou Camp, so I am not sure if they would be willing to spend much more than 25 to 27 mill on Masch. Also it seems that really only 1 club is interested in him, if there were 2 or more then we might have a bit of a bidding war but as it stands that’s not going to happen.

Personall I would also go with 2 up front, but it’s very unlikely that Raffa is going to change his system. However it would be nice to think that he has learnt his lesson from last season when he played this system (4231) against the Stoke’s, West Brom’s etc, but somehow I doubt it.

I think the reason he didnt play 4 4 2 last season was prob down to the lack of forward options he had and also i suppose there was noone he thought would do the job better than gerrard Kuyt is workman like and would do an ok job but rafa prefers him on the wing babbel flatters to decieve and ngog to inexperienced lets hope he gets a quality striker in this summer

agree with 1892, if keane had produced more (even though he did OK) rafa would have played a 4-4-2. i think alonso will go and the team could be:

Steve McMahon - July 2nd, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Owen is not fit to wear the shirt in my eyes, irrespective of what Carra say’s in his book, Owen let us down badly.
Aside from the personal dislike of the lad, he is also a walking physio table. Personally I would be as sick as a parrott if he came back as he put’s ingurland first and always has, also there would be this constant debate about him getting fit for ingurland, not Liverpool.
Anyway if Blackburn have the good sense to ignore him I would like to think Raffa has as well.
DM - July 2nd, 2009 at 4:10 pm
i think the best person 2 have who would happily sit on the bench for some games but wen called upon could help break the deadlock and cause trouble for the opposition would be david trezegeut. i heard a rumour he could be involved in a swap with dossena. sure hes 31 but i think he could do a job, and he isnt injury prone as far as im aware

Warrenisaredfan - July 2nd, 2009 at 4:30 pm
£25m that is ridiculous! Mascherano will not be leaving Liverpool this summer, as I beleive he will sign a renewed contract if Benitez offers him more than the rediclous reported 25k a week he currently gets, as i know footballers are paid too much but we will all agree that is rediculous in comparison with Lucas, Babel and Voronin who are getting alot more for very little contribution. I beleive Alonso may be the real possibile departure unfortunately but he is replaceable as much as i would like to see him stay. Alonso is not happy with Benitez and although he is happy to stay I think a £25m offer from Real Madrid would be accepted. I imagine Real will sign Alonso and Arbeloa for a combined fee of £35m?
I think that Cattermole and Martinez should be signed if Alonso does go, also I would like to see Richards as cover if Arbeloa does go. I think we are all in agreement that Silva is a very real possibility? A £25m offer could very well be accepted and David would give us some more flair and speed on the wing. Although I think a striker or two are in real need. Obviously who we will sign will depend on who we sell – which unfortunately is always the case at Liverpool under the rafalution for reasons not of his own – but I do not think Rafa should panic sell in order to bring in the players he wants, it would be silly to sell our top players if we really do have ambition to win the title, but as i said before Alonso and Arbeloa can be replaced.
Dom and McMahon, I agree that Agger would be a very decent shout for defensive midfield as he has all the neccesary attributes much like Marquez of Barca who plays both CB and CDM. Although, I would prefer to use him in his natural defence role of CB, yet i think he could very easily be used as cover at DM and could as you said play against the ‘lesser’ teams just to give us something else. After all he does have a knack of scoring winners against the ’smaller’ teams. Personally (if we do sell Alonso) I would just use one DM or possibly play Martinez, ALTHOUGH we cannot rule out the possibility of a player swap with Real? Why not Heinze (thn sell dossena/ can provide cover for CB), Sneijder, Robben and Huntellaar for Alonso and Arbeloa, after all REAL have transfer listed all of their Dutch players. That way Real will get the two they want and will offload the players they deem unneccesary, and we all know that under Rafa the likes of Sneijder, Robben (previous exp. in the EPL) and Huntelaar could really come good, could just give us that extra dimension and would really ‘beef up’ the squad with neccesary quality and will provide competition for places whilst allowing for greater rotation?
Then the team could be……..
…………………………………………………….REINA……………………………………………………
JOHNSON…………………..CARRA………………AGGER/SKRTEL………….HEINZE (whilst aurelio is injured and would provide valuable experience for Insua)
……………………………………………………MASCHERANO……………………………………..
……………………………..SNEIJDER…………………………………………………………………..
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
KUYT………………………………………..GERRARD…………………………………ROBBEN
……………………………………………………………TORRES………………………………………..
Subs…………
CAVALIERI
AGGER/SKRTEL
INSUA/AURELIO/HEINZE
LUCAS
RIERA
BENAYOUN
BABEL
HUNTELLAAR(could play up front with Torres as well? alternatives)
With youngetsers such as Spearing, Darby, Pacheco, Nemeth, Plessis etc providing even greater cover
Just a thought but….well……….if REAL are going to keep dogging us then why not get the best possible offer? As I said real have transfer listed them so why not thay would all do a great job.
What do you thnk?

si i think your right 2 some extent but im alomst 100% sure that xavi n ineista are on better contract than 25k a week!!! i think thats the reason masch’s agent is stirring it up, as barca already have 4 brilliant midfielders and they only play 3 at 1 time. i think that alonso could go though because he hasnt had the best relationship with rafa since the barry saga. i would love for them both 2 stay though

keep, masch, sell alonso and arbeloa 2 madrid with van der vaart, sneijder and robben/heinze/negredo coming the other way. sell dossena 2 juve with trezegeut comin 2 us. sell the fringe players and make around 30 mill 2 buy silva and poss richards? would be good dealing and a big enough squad to bring home the title
red19 - July 2nd, 2009 at 5:25 pm
possibly get sturridge on a free, martins on the cheap and buy a world class winger/striker (silva) then we have wat united had last year of the 4 attackers to give options. richards could be on the cheap and get cattermole, so we have more strength in depth without the need to sell massively
torrard - July 2nd, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Burrows,
What kinda shit are you smoking? ronaldinho? that’s not gonna happen, I don’t know why you insist on speaking like you have an inside with the club, you are a fuktard
livebird09 - July 2nd, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Sell Alonso and buy Noble from West Ham.
We would still have money left and buy Micah Richards. Cara is getting older so we need to think about the future.
We must keep Masch, because he is the player that every big team need.
Riera is a good winger, he is better than Silva surely. Riera was one of the best in Spain team on the Confederation cup while Silva was on the bench.
Remember those goals he scored for Liverpool.

to be honest masch is the best tackler in the epl but he isnt the best distributor,(alonso), so i dont think we should let either of them go, a team where alonso goes and gerrard drops into midfield loses gerrards attacking threat and honestly gerrard isnt as good a distributor as alonso. if we had to sell one , i d rather sell masch although i love him ( not ina gay way) destruvctive forces are more readily available than creative forces
i d push barca up to 30 million for masch and see how badly they want him, and i d tie alonso down to a new contract
just wondering if alonso wants madrid for his world cup ambitions, if hes playign week in week out at real then hes in the limelight all the time

ahha owen could be going united what a wanker
Jakey - July 2nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Not going to happen! Simple as. Liverpool don’t need the money, our finances aren’t that bad
Liverpool need to buy one top class forward player, not sure on Silva. Riera has hardly done a bad job. Would like to see a huge signing of villa or aguero! If thats not possible a meduim priced attacking mid.
Travis - July 3rd, 2009 at 2:32 am
For 30 mil I would sell masch. For 12 mil I would sell kuyt to, I think mas will stay, but Alonso will go. Agger could play as a DM as mentionted earlier, But I would rather see him as a left full back. He is good on the ball, strong, and attacking. Van der vaart, and robben would be good buys, but I dont know if we will get anyone at this stage. Weve been linked with, KERISON, AGUERO, LEVEZZI, KANA, SILVA, VILLA, IBRAHIMOVICH. I dont know if any of these sill eventuate
