Michael Owen Signs Two Year Man United Contract: Good Deal or Bad Deal?
by Mad Dog and Glory on July 3rd, 2009 267 words | 133 commentsMy God, he’s only just gone and done it!
Michael Owen: Cheer up mate, you’ve just signed on for another two years of top flight football!
Michael Owen has completed his move to Manchester United after the free agent signed a two-year deal with the club.
The 29-year-old forward spent the day at United’s Carrington training complex as the terms of his free transfer move were thrashed out.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker’s contract with Newcastle ended at the end of last month. (BBC Sport)
Now that this deal has been completed I find it hard to decide if it’s a good bit of business by Sir Alex or whether this is the first sign of the onset of dementia for the aging boss. Michael Owen used to be one of the most feared strikers on the planet, then times passed, and some more time passed and he then became a player who cost Newcastle a hell of a lot of money for essentially spending 80% of the time with an ice pack strapped to one part of his body or another.
Still he is only 29, although in Michael Owen terms that could be 39 seeing as he has been around the houses more times than my postman and may well have burnt out his career just before he left for Real Madrid all those years ago.
Anyone want to wager just how many games he will figure in during those two years, I’ll open the bidding with 9 (Carling Cup ties mostly). But seriously, good luck to the lad, it seems those brochures he produced did the trick!

LFC Fans tend to do this critice other teams players and it haunts us!!
there’s being positive and there is being stupid!!
lets just see what next season brings ey!
FACT - July 3rd, 2009 at 8:54 pm
hes a f***ing traitor, he USED to be my favorite striker ever since he first played for liverpool (aka next premier league champs) and even when he moved clubs twice he was still one of my favorite players. He left us and i hope he gets injured both seasons in his 2 year spell with manure. fergie should die cause he did this on purpose cause we came so close to clinching the title. the only way i would forgive him is if he would refuse to play against us in whenever we and manure played. that would deserve respect.

utd taking freebies what ever nxt well michael owen you greedy little s**t uv got no loyalty what so ever ur a has been and if i was you i would ask fergie if u can have a day off when utd and liverpool play because stevie g is gonna snap u in half u greedy liitle loser
kermit - July 3rd, 2009 at 9:09 pm
as a liverpool supporter i think you are all pretty harsh on michael owen , so he left he wanted something new to try , and now that he is with man utd goodluck to him
its a good signing by saf, owen always has goals in him and playign for man utd he will want to stay fit , plus if he clicks with rooney england have their world cup partnership sorted, i think this is bad news for liverpool, but good for michael owen , and i for one won t be hating on him
big red - July 3rd, 2009 at 9:19 pm
kermit what the hell he left us to join real madrid when rafa wanted him in are plans and he jumped ship we offered to take him bk and then he went to newcastle for money and to go to one of are biggest rivals how can you wish him the best of luck

Now this is a funny one. All you mancs Ronaldo gone :0) Tevez gone :0) and in comes a liverpool reject, i love it. You do realise if we wanted him we would have signed him but no ye can have him he is no loonger good enough for Liverpool however could be ok for United. Funny one though best laugh ive had in ages all you mancs must be very stressed out during this transfer window ha ha ha

Amazing, Whiskey head get’s rid of Saha because he was a constant sick note, yet he goes and signs Michael Owen.
Strange to say the least.
Steve McMahon - July 3rd, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Agree LFC till i die,
Ronaldo scored 67 goals in the last 2 seasons, Tevez was a real workhorse who covered the pitch and I cant really remember him been injured, also he accounted for I think 19 points of manure’s total last year.
And they have so far replaced the above 2 with
Valencia – a lad who is as prolific as Tittimus Bramble in front of goal and they have also brought a player who will make sure that the physio is never fired due to lack of work.
Cant figure it out, so far manure have weakened themselves this summer and not strengthened themselves, also combine the fact that Scholes, Giggs and Van Der Sar are not getting any younger. Nani is very much like a waste of space and Anderson / Carrick as far as I am concerned are not genuine midfield leaders, more like followers, but they currently have no one to follow.
Lets hope things stay as they are, also it will be interesting to see how Rooney fares out with Gaylord no longer around.
This could be a great summer for LFC after all.
Bev - July 3rd, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Let’s get things into perspective Owen has gone to Man U? So what, out of all the clubs that came calling for him United was the best choice. I am amazed that some LFC supporters are calling him a Judas now, because the way he treated the club when he left for Real showed his true colours to me then. I am glad we haven’t signed him, and there will be a reason why Rafa showed no interest in him. Rafa wants someone to support or in place of El Nino, who is without doubt a superior player to Owen even at his peak and don’t forget El Nino did turn down United 3 times before he signed for LFC and he has also stated his future football intentions are Liverpool Red. David Silva’s preferred transfer is to LFC if he leaves Valencia, even though once again AF is after him. So if the best AF can do is sell Rolando and not sign Tevez is to then sign Valencia and Owen, I am not going to loose any sleep over it. If you could honestly choose a striker to play along side or instead of Torres would you really pick Owen? He is all for himself, always has been always will. This man has no loyalty, so of course he is going to sign for United. The tide is turning; King Kenny is back, that’s better than Owen any day of the week.

you liverpool fans give me such a chuckle, you so angry at manu cos u cant stand that we gonna win our 19th top flight title and overtake you. Face it benitez is a so narrow minded and stubben that as long as he’s in charge manu fans won’t ever worry about liverpool. You go on about how manu won’t win anything without ronaldo and tevez. seems strange that you speak so highly of them i bet that when they was at united you said they were overrated. And look at it like this valencia might not replace 16 goals that ronaldo got last season but hes not lazy like ronaldo and doesn’t have a paddy every five minutes. ronaldo was a great player but he had his flaws when he wasn’t at his best he was shit but valencia more of a team player and more consistant and now rooney can play in his prefered position then he should get more goals and berbatov settled in now so wouldnt be suprised so see 20 goals by his name at the end of the season instead of the 12 this season and as for tevez he wasn’t a goal scorer owen got more goals than him last season and could well end up with 12-15 goals this season if things go better for him plus there is still a long transfer window and fergie has 80 million ready to spend, and he’s knows what he’s doing he won’t rush into decisions usually, just look at last year we signed berbs on the last day of the window. And who are liverpool gonna sign who can replace xabi and probably masch chelsea are gonna be the ones fighting with us this season well you didnt really fight us last season u just hung on to our heels, even after beating us u couldn’t challenge and dont forget we dont have to deal with playing the world club cup this year so that little advantage you had at christmas won’t be there this season

fuck owen that bitch.
i hate him more any other player.
back stabbing greedy bastard.
hw can he sign for the scum after havin a wonderful career at LFC. this proves if has no respect for LFC.
but then again it just proves united are becoming weaker. selling ronaldo n losing tevez n buyin OWEN. haha.
dats like us selling TORRES n gerrard and buying sheringham!!!
theres only one way to beat them get round the back, catch me if you can as i am a liverpool man... - July 3rd, 2009 at 11:39 pm
hey guys heard a whisper…….come close……..
fergie also wants John Barnes on the wing to push Valencia……
you heard it here first
Daglish - July 3rd, 2009 at 11:41 pm
This is just a little game for Fergie thinking hes smart. He has done it trying to upset the LFC fans:FAILED! he has done it to try and get the player back on track and back to his goalscoring form:FAILED! And he has done it because he will love the credit if he succeeds which he won’t because he has: FAILED!
Daglish - July 3rd, 2009 at 11:45 pm
I really couldnt care less Owen is a washed out has been and i don’t care where his career goes.
theres only one way to beat them get round the back, catch me if you can as i am a liverpool man... - July 3rd, 2009 at 11:47 pm
this is prob the best news i have heard in ages, Old Has been Owen who no one wanted to touch is now going to play for the scum,,,, this is great… i honestly thought they were going to buy Benzema or something.
Rooney will get 10 goals max, owen when playing possibly another 10 berba 5/6 you can’t win the prem like that…
Its going to be really hard for united which is good news to us…
red devil forever - July 3rd, 2009 at 11:56 pm
why are you liverpool fans so jealous????
i mean look so we lost ronaldo who we got 80mill for…. we would never spend 32mill on Tevez he wasn’t that good…
But we still got Ronney, Berba, Scholes, Anderson…. and valencia will score more goals…
Fergie is a Genius of the modern game. He brough Sheringham in and look what he did for us, i think alot of reds just don’t understand that Owen is only 29 and if he gets a good run in the squad then he’ll score a hat full of goals..
I’m sure he’ll prob score more than Torres next season.
Now if we study the condition at Liverpool you’ll lose your midfield next season. Masch and Alonso who i have always believed are the one of the best pairings in the world, are going now that will affect you guys more than us….
So Liverpool need to look at themselves instead of critising united…
mark - July 4th, 2009 at 12:00 am
agree in almost everything u said, red devil. but owen scoring more than torres? that im not sure of
theres only one way to beat them get round the back, catch me if you can as i am a liverpool man... - July 4th, 2009 at 12:02 am
eh yeh…. Red devil forever…..
Owen will not score more than Torres next season seriously….
Ok lets begin:
Last time i looked Ronaldo and Tevez are were attacking options that you had, with the former scoring 40+ goals in one season… No matter what team your in thats going to affect a team….
Now Alonso and Masch are more or less defensive midfielders, yes Alonso has scored some cracking goals and is the modern day Jan Molby, but fine if we do lose him we have a better passer of the ball in Gerrard… Masch is a destroyer but again can be replaced… Our attacking options are still in the side….
And will be increased if we buy another striker…
Now would you like to comment on that
red devil forever - July 4th, 2009 at 12:08 am
Thank you Mark… just watch…. Torres needs to be fed, the heart and soul of liverpool midfield is going… he’ll starve
ok theres only one way to beat them get round the back, catch me if you can as i am a liverpool man…you come up with some ok points but i really disagree with your evaluation of Owen…
Lets also not forget that Fergie is not done, i mean he may put in a bid for Torres as we still have the 80 mill…lol
No seriously we have the moeny and i have heard talk of Fabiano coming… So having Owen as back up can’t be bad…. and liverpool without your midfield are going to be really screwed…
I think Anderson will pick up and with Carrick, that’ll prob be the best midfield in premiership
theres only one way to beat them get round the back, catch me if you can as i am a liverpool man... - July 4th, 2009 at 12:20 am
red devil sorry mate, you need to understand Carrick and Anderson reallly aren’t that good…
Unless you buy world class to replace world class you’ll suffer…. and i think we can see from both your purchases Valencia and Owen that the 80 odd million that you got for Ronaldo will be used to balance the books…
i mean aren’t you a little embarrasses that Ronaldo was so desperate to leave when Torres loves Liverpool, that all the people that your after seem to want to go else where….. does that not tell you anything????
I mean Fabiano he’s 28, and not really that good…
Look i actually feel sorry for United as i wanted Liverpool to destroy them but now whats the point against this United… please understand YOU HAVE OWEN WHO LIVERPOOL DIDN’T EVEN WANT ON A FREE……
its sad mate

Marcheda is not the new Del Piero, he scored a couple of goals that eith er bounced off his ass or he was just flukaly in the right place at the right time and scored… yes they were important goals but he’s nothing special…
we had a player call Mellor who notched up a few goals as well one season…

and toi be totally honest anonymous, unless you (united) sign a midfield you wont be challenging for the league this year, tevez kept you afloat at times last year nodding in equalisers and winners, and without ronaldo you are lacking a lot of pace and firepower , he may have be a prick but he was definately utd s main attacking threat, your midfield is piss poor, anderson carrick fletcher , scholes and gigs need zimmer frames, you managed to ge valencia in and yeah boy is he class, maybe you can batle with city to see which team is the top in manchester , because this year it ll be between liverpool chel;sea and maybe arsenal

kermit - July 4th, 2009 at 12:58 am
i watched the liverpool man u game last year and as a liverpool fan i tended to agree with fergies viewpoint the scoreline flattered us, for a while in the second half utd came at us and it was wave after wave of utd attack, torres made the difference , then gerrard , and well the game was over when doss hit in the fourth, the scoreline was deceptive in that game , and at times i felt fear that man utd would go on and win it, when you really crush a team you dont feel fear that that team will woin the game you are supposedly crushing them in
and yes i am a liverpool fan just an honest one

” And look at it like this valencia might not replace 16 goals that ronaldo got last season but hes not lazy like ronaldo and doesn’t have a paddy every five minutes.”
Goals win matches, ronaldo scored 67 goals for ye in the last 2 seasons alone, how do you think you can replace those goals
“ronaldo was a great player but he had his flaws when he wasn’t at his best he was shit but valencia more of a team player ”
Great, nice comparison.
” berbatov settled in now so wouldnt be suprised so see 20 goals by his name at the end of the season instead of the 12 this season”
You must one of only a few manure heads who honestly belives that Berbatov has settled in or more to the point was a good purchase, Tevez is a bigger loss than if Berbatov had to leave, a point mainly agreed with by manure fans as he is lazy and not really cut out for a top 4 team.
“as for tevez he wasn’t a goal scorer owen got more goals than him last season and could well end up with 12-15 goals this season if things go better for him”
Tevez may not of been a goal scorer but his effort on the pitch allowed the other manure forwards to shine, something owen wont be able to give ye fron the physio table.
“and he’s knows what he’s doing he won’t rush into decisions usually, just look at last year we signed berbs on the last day of the window.”
Yeah great move??????????????????????????
“And who are liverpool gonna sign who can replace xabi and probably masch chelsea are gonna be the ones fighting with us this season well you didnt really fight us last season u just hung on to our heels, even after beating us u couldn’t challenge and dont forget we dont have to deal with playing the world club cup this year so that little advantage you had at christmas won’t be there this season”
Neither player is gone as of yet, therefore until one or both leave speculation on replacements is pointless for this argument.
The little advantage we had last season has just been doubled by the transfer of Ronaldo and the release of Tevez, the singing of a sick note and the non-goalscoring Ronaldo replacement ye bought, Valencia.
All in all, ye are shooting yourselves in the foot with 2 backward singings that ye have just made.
lets bomb old trafford - July 4th, 2009 at 2:09 am
he needs to be shot he could of gone to any other team but the fkin UNITED SCUM why did he have to go there wudnt it be funny tho if he scored like 7 own goals when we play them at old trafford lol

Steve McMahon I like your style. I cannot help but feel that Red Devil is on here venting his frustration at the loss and signings AF has made, His posts are trying to convince himself rather than us. Owen more goals than Torres!!! I am just checking sky news for any breakouts at mental institutions around the country. Headline Mad Manc Supporter on the Run, shoot to kill.
Rafa is playing his cards close to his chest this time and I have to say I approve.
Rumour is though that David Silva is in Liverpool staying were Torres stayed when he signed?
joeeee - July 4th, 2009 at 2:39 am
this is how its gna go with owen, hes signed a 2 yr contract on a frree so…………..
he will either have an awesome 1st season and a shit second and then go some where else for free
he will have a shit 1st season and be sold at end of it
he will get injured and be out for both his 2 yrs there and be the biggest waste of space like he was at newcastle
and to be honest with you my choice is tha hes gna get injured and be out for the 2 yrs
wa he shud of done is of come bk to liverpool and have his career revived by the one and only rafa
joining man u was the bigggest moistake of his life and when those manc cunts play liverpool, the fans are just going to destroy him in an instance for joining MAN U!!!! come on, why!?
and whoever up there ^^^^ said that owen will score more than torres, one of the best strikers in the WORLD, then shut the fuck up u stupid little cunt and get a grip, torres can score more goals than owen with his eyes sht for fuck sake
so lets be fair man u are fucked now ronaldo and tevez are gone, they will have rooney and berbatov upfront, and berbatov is the biggest piece of shit at footbball i have ever seen, you sold ur to best players so ur fucked ladsss
u have spent money on valencia, come on hes shit!!!!!!!! and liverpool dnt need to splash the cash on top draw players as we all ready have the team to challenge the title, not sayin we cudnt use a bit extra help like silva lennon young etc.
but all u manc cunts out there be prepared for a two horse race next season between liverpool and chelsea, which liverpool will win on the last day of the season which happens to be against chelsea
:D lmfaooo
so to some this up…. OWEN IS A WASTE OF SPACE WHO IS FUCKING DOOMED FROM THE START!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ellyrie - July 4th, 2009 at 11:16 am
HAHA Man united have 2 scousers as there main strikers… says a lot
Anyway as a livepool fan i am worried i think owen will flourish at united and i can see him wining them the league title with some last minute goals at anfield…
As an england fan i am very very happy just ahead of the world cup michaels last most probably he signs for a top side he will regain his form and flourish under sir alexs guidence i think he will rebuild his partnership with rooney and as theyll be playing in and out weekly i can see them both headlining the english strikeforce finally stabalising it and winning us the world cup!
Good Job imo i would rather england win the world cup then liverpool win the league
COME ONE ENGLAND

red devil forever - July 4th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
I Think the BOSS fergie has pulled out a gem here… this is a win-win scenario all round…. owen has a chance to play with the big boys again and try and show capello he still has it, fergie has a player that he’s wanted for a long time and a establised goal poacher that he can get 20 goals out of if he’s fit and also now has three strikers, The glazers are happy as they didn’t have to fork out any transfer fee plus its only a 2 year contract…. oh and its made all the liverpool fans go crazy… WIN WIN all round..
I’m putting a bet he’ll score a hatrick on his first game back against the scouses
red devil forever - July 4th, 2009 at 2:02 pm

What has Owen done in the past 5 years for some man u supporters to think that they have signed a goal machine? if he was any good City would of signed him as they are trying to corner the market in strikers?

Ellyrie- you are a knob head. Liverpool comes first before england. Meanwhile liverpool fans spread all over the world and not just in england as england’s case.
So i prefer liverpool winning the league to england qualifying for the world cup. Who even cared when england failed to qualify for the euros.
Lincoln burrows - July 4th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Sorry Ellyrie,
I have now re-read my last comment as realised that I’ve made myself look like an idiot. If supporting Liverpool wasn’t enough, I then go and say there are no england fans living abroad…. When you’re 42 and still live your parents it tough to see the world from another angle. Thanks mum for opening me up
it’s the thought that counts and the thought is that you’ve made me look foolish so my most prized possession is now yours. I’m have written your name on my willy to signify this fact – well I tried to but I could only fit El…. I will get it tattooed when I have saved up enough pocket money
Dannyboy - July 4th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Owen has commited the ultimate act of betrayal, but after he ran off to Madrid we always knew he’d be capable of doing this. Let’s get it into perspective, this isn’t like Robbie Fowler going, or Stevie G jumping into bed with SAF or Nando sprinting away from Anfield it’s injury prone I’ll kiss any badge Michael Owen. If I had the choice between champions league football, playing in front of 70 odd thousand supporters at United every other week or playing in a relegation dogfight week in week out with average players at Hull and a manager with an addiction to fake tan then yellow and black are the colors Hull is the name!
Tut tut Michael I wish you the very worst of luck and just as sweet as it was to see your haunted little face when we lifted the CL in Istanbul I’m looking forward to you being released from Old Trafford at the end of next season when Rafa finally gets his hands on the Premiership!
Fergie, Busby, Charlton, Cantona, Keane, Bruce, Best, Scholes, Giggs and now Owen, just as you did last season home and away your boys are going to take one hell of a beating!
PS Rafa we need one world class striker to play alongside Nando and a world class winger.
In Rafa We Trust…
Vorian - July 4th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
When I read stuff about anderson I thought he sounded really good, but when I saw him play i nthe final. he wasnt even marked and he played rubbish. Nanis alright but has a funny name. Scholes and gigs is gonna hit united big time, ronaldo leaving is gonna hti em even more! Van Der Sar is probs the best goalie in the world atm, no probs with him.
But lets think about this players wearing the magic shirt, cantona, bekham ronaldo and now valencia?
As far as Owen goes, best signing they could make and if the win the prem next year it will be down to Owen. In fact inform Owen is their best shot and only shot at winning the prem next year, now ronaldos gone.
I still think liverpool needed Owen more, and benitez should have hijacked this move.

its sad to see a player that was adored by us go to united, i mean you would never see the likes of scholes, giggs, neville, fowler, gerrard, carra swap sides EVER…
he is a very selfish player, and money is all he thinks about he’ll screw united if he can, i wouldn’t want a player like that as it doesn’t inspire the fans… thats why no true liverpool fan can hate Kuyt… he bleeds for us…
Torres took a pay cut to come to us….

Oewn, (i think thats OWEN) offered a less rate of pay than the one he was offered at manure, but Raffa, (again i thin thats spelt RAFA) didn’t want to take the chance on him for the obvious reasons. Also true to form in his first interview at manure he once again shows his true ambition, INGURLAND, (I hope you meant to spell England like that????),not his club
i do know what i said, but it was something called being sarcastic…. Steve McMoan i just think that Owen is a good punt, yeh i’ll give it to you that he cares about england more but he now knows he has to play well for his club before fabio takes him to south africa.. so i see that as a win win scenario all round
Calvo - July 5th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
So Owen said that he wants to get back into the england squad…big deal,to do that he needs to score goals and should that happen that will be for Utd.
He cost nothing, his wages are less than say a Darren Bent wage packet.
Fergie still has money to get other players so I dont see that it can actual harm Utd.He will not be regarded as 1st choice and but i can see him getting atleast 15/20 goals next season. And if so then thats great business if he doesnt then its only his wages that are being paid.
It wasnt so long that some ppl wanted at their club whether that was a back up or as a 1st choice so now he has joined Utd and its hahahaah at Utd.
If one thing that Owen knows and that is scoring goals and I would take a free Michael Owen over atleast 70% of the strikers that will be bought or sold in the prem this summer.

Correct me if my history is wrong here, but didn’t Owen reject Liverpool when he joined real madrid? So how can Owen be a Liverpool reject – dream on!
TO ALL THOSE IDIOTS CALLING OWEN A JUDAS
He’s an Everton fan!!!! Have you forgotten this – why should he have loyalty to Liverpool? Afterall, it was a club that was soooo cheap they let him go.
Fair play to Owen and from an England point of view I hope we see him do well. England needs the old owen back.

Anyway, my point with Owen is this, he is injury prone at the best of time playing the few game’s he play’s for his club without adding games by playing international’s, Newcastle found this out big style, let’s see the Utd’s fans comment’s on this site when Owen is unfit for manure game’s but somehow seem’s to rediscover his fitness just before Ingurland game’s.
This, I know, will piss you off big style, and then you might see that getting this bloke was maybe not such a good move after all.
Look as much as manure fans would like to put the spin that whiskey head is so clever, this was a master stroke, etc etc the fact remains that this lad is a cripple and is more focused on his horse’s than his football and don’t tell me that after selling Ronaldo and Tevez that getting Valencia and a cripple balance’s thing’s up, because I am happy in the knowledge, it dosent.

Man u supporters have a very short memory, before you signed him and there was talk of owen coming back to Liverpool you lot could not help yourselves. Taking the piss out of us for thinking of signing sicknote back, but as soon as he signs for you he is a goal scoring machine. Pity he wasn’t for newcastle and they might not be in the division they are now. 26 goals since he signed in 2005? and only 13 while at Real. Yes he use to score goals, back when he was at liverpool but that was over five years ago? they only thing the signing of owen has done has been to take the spot light off ronaldo going, because lets face it while you are all now defending the signing that you were mocking us for even thinking about, you have forgotton that your actual proven goal scoring machine has left.

Newest rumour that I have read is that Liverpool football club have an agreement with Real Madrid to Sign former Manchester United legend Ruud Van Nistlerooy. .Xabi Alonso will move to the Bernabeau for a fee of 33.5 million pounds (41 million euros) but the big shock is that Ruud van nistlerooy will be moving to anfield this summer. I wonder if this is true how the Man u supporters will take it? any thoughts?
