Liverpool In Battle to Land Excellent £25m Star: Man City Also In Chase

The Rumour
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is eyeing Inter Milan midfielder Esteban Cambiasso.
AS says should Benitez sell Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, he will compete with Manchester City for Cambiasso.
City offered £15 million for the Argentina international last week, with personal terms worth £5 million-a-year. Inter, however, rate Cambiasso in the £25 million class.

The Analysis
As discussed previously I believe that Cambiasso is a terrific player who would go some way to replacing Xabi Alonso if the Spaniard were indeed to move to Real Madrid, now we can add into the mix the fact that megabucks Man City have decided to get into the fight.
Mark Hughes has approached just about every living footballer so far this summer and has been beaten to the punch on many high profile players and they could once again be given short shrift by the Inter Milan midfielder.
Jose Mourinho will be loathed to lose Esteban but the figure of £25m may well make them think about such a sale, whether Rafa makes such a move is unknown but he is an admirer of the Argentine international.
The Likelihood
Cambiasso to join Man City/Liverpool: Would he be tempted by the big bucks at Eastlands? They do have a couple of his international teammates, but Anfield has his national team captain!

Ok… he’s a shoot on sight type of guy, quick thinking and able to score goals. Very good defensive midfielder. He’s just what manC need and if alonso or masch go then he would be a good replacment.
From a personal point of view though I just can’t see him leaving Inter – I may be wrong but its a club on the up in Italy.

£25 is about right – problem is I don’t think inter will want to sell as they have no need to.

He was excellent in the champions league against man utd so i can see him being a superb addition to the liverpool team. But having said that it looks as though alonso will be staying and i for one am glad.

Apparently Real have been put off by Xabi’s price tag and Mach only eants a renewed contract therefore neither will be leaving just as long as javi gets what he wants. As we already know this transfer will only happen if either Mach or Xabi leave and as of yet it looks as if they will not. However, if (big if) they are to leave then Cambiasso would be a perfect repalcement for either, but im not sure that i would pay £25m for a 29 year old, would you guys?

BTW, Cambiasso is just another rumour. Alonso is staying and Masch will also stay. Unless of course Real bid 40 million for Alonso or Barca offer 50 million which is very unlikely.

Barry, well, no one really knows what’s really happening behind the scenes. Even if Alonso hands in a transfer (which I think is quite unlikely), I suspect it will not change much of the valuation. Real still have to choke up 35 – 40 mill (depending on who you believe). So that’s the still same scenario for Real and Alonso will not want to do that because it makes him look like the one pushing for the move. Now with Real looking elsewhere such Rossi, I suspect their interest is gradually evaporating. Just like the case for Villa in Valencia.
On a separate note. I hope Rafa and team are working behind the scenes on Silva’s deal. Now with Villa quite available and Valencia really needing the money, perhaps Liverpool can steal the player with a bargain? Ok…I am dreaming.
