Real Madrid make insulting offer
Florentino Perez: Taking the p*ss!
Real Madrid have made a cheeky new move for Liverpool star Xabi Alonso – offering less than they did before.
The Spanish giants claim to have lodged a £25million bid last week which was rejected – and their petulant response was to reduce the figure by £3m in a new approach.
“It’s not a mystery that Real Madrid are interested in signing him (Alonso) but it won’t be easy,” the club’s new coach Manuel Pellegrini admitted last night.
“We are looking at alternatives for some positions,” he added.
“The attack is complete and perhaps a central midfielder or full-back is still missing but the rest of the positions are covered.”
The big-spending Madrid money men have splashed out a fortune this summer and this latest effort to get Alonso comes in the wake of reports in Spain that the Anfield star wants the move.
Alonso is reported to have told Liverpool chief Rafa Benitez by phone that he wants to leave.

Now this really does take the p*ss, clearly designed to say to Liverpool “you want more, we’ll offer less” and the club needs to distance itself from the constant speculation. Rafa has come out in an official statement and made it abundantly clear he wishes to keep Alonso but if the player himself has now asked for the transfer to happen then Benitez still has the cards in his pocket.
The club will not be happy about losing the inspirational Spanish midfielder but there is no point in keeping a player who wishes to leave and the next step is to make it perfectly clear to the player and his potential suitors that they will happily keep him at the club, even if it means he is unhappy and has to take part in reserve team action, until the Spanish giants cough up.
Consider the prices forked out for Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, showing quite clearly just how much the La Liga side has to play with, then take into account that Alonso is at his peak right now and then you take into account the bid that the Bernabeu side is willing to pay and it is clearly nowhere near enough.
Alonso to Real Madrid: This may run and run but my gut feeling is that Xabi will be on his way back to Spain.
