Liverpool Set to Make Excellent £18m Alonso Replacement Bid
by Steven Constable on July 14th, 2009 32 commentsAs Benitez appears to concede defeat where Xabi is concerned, he looks to high class Italian to fill the midfield void!
The Rumour
Cash-strapped Roma are bracing themselves for a bid from Liverpool for star midfielder Alberto Aquilani.
La Repubblica says Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez sees Aquilani as an ideal replacement for want-away midfield schemer Xabi Alonso.
Roma officials are convinced Liverpool will make their offer either tomorrow or Thursday and know they have little room to maneuver given the club’s cashflow problems.
An offer in the region of £18 million from Liverpool will be enough to land Aquilani.

The Analysis
I am pretty sure no Liverpool fans want to see Xabi Alonso leave the club but is looking increasingly likely that this may well happen in the next few weeks and as a result many potential replacements have been highlighted by the media and this latest one would be a pretty good like for like stand in for the Spaniard.
The 25 year old Italian international has been a mainstay of the Roma midfield for a number of years and has been at the Stadio Olimipico since he was 15, and even though he only just signed a long term contract, ironically to keep him from leaving the club, it appears that Rafa is very much interested in signing the intelligent midfielder.
Luciano Spalletti will struggle to keep Aquilani given the fact that the Rome outfit are so far off the leading pack in Serie A, they finished 21 points short of Inter last season, and also missed out on a Champions League berth and it could therefore be hard to persuade the local born lad that he can fulfill his potential at a side who seem to be moving backwards.
The Likelihood
Aquilani to Liverpool: Would be an ideal replacement and the price seems about right.

im a fan of aquilani. he has a wicked long shot on him too. yeah i think its worth it. hes younger and about the same skill level(even though a slightly different type of player) than alonso.

Well done Johnny barnes. Not too sure about Aquilani. 18 mill is quite a big risk to take.
appledave - July 14th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
i think there aren’t that many players who can replace alonso. there are more that can repalce masceranho but he hopefully will stay. aquilani however is someone who i think can fill the alonso void do if we got him, i would not mind seeing alonso go but only for £35m.
Warrenisaredfan - July 14th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Aquilani is an interesting prospect, but at £18m? He would be a direct replacement for Xabi who nows looks as if he wants to go but it all depends on the deal Real offer. After all at £22m for Xabi and £18m for Aquilani would this be a step backwards? If we were to get £22m plus players such as Negredo and/or Van der Vaart etc then I think this could be very appealing to rafa.
So if this were to happen then…….
Real offer accepted of £20M plus Negredo and VdV for Xabi Alonso
Then………………….Rafa snaps up Alberto Aquilani for around £18m?
Not too sure whether id want Alberto? No doubt he is very good but how many Italians adapt to the pace of the EPL? Why not (if this is to happen) offer Dossena plus £10m for him – a very good deal don’t you think?
Ash T - July 14th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
i never saw him play but my friend in italy talks highly of him
he also said inler would be a good replacement so aquilani or inler look like they could be good replacements for alonso
i dont fink mascherano will go i think he will he a new deal just hope he signs it but if he doesnt sign it i hope we get cana as his replacement
danny - July 14th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
we should get snjedier for 18 million instead
sell alonso 20 million plus van der varrt and negredo
lvslfc - July 14th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
aquillaani would be a good aquisition, inler would also be good, anyone thought of a straight swap of van der varrt and sneider for alonso.

does this guy or de rossi get more games for italy, just wondering.
Warrenisaredfan - July 14th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
To all of you who has asked for Sneijder……..although I agree with you, Real have said that he is very much in their plans for the future so i doubt he will be part of any deal.
This source suggests a bid will be lodged either tmoro or thursday………………………………..dunno what it is but somehow i dont see that happening
lol
Sky Sports have also suggested under ‘liverpool fc’ that R.madrid have stated that both Ribery and/or ALONSO may be out of their reach!!!!
This transfer saga is incredibely confusing to all those outside of the club’s office.

i would rather have 35mill than a swap and put that money towards aguero as we can get him cheaper than manu cause we have such a great relationship with atletico like we did with torres also get silva for left mid
put gerrard as a attacking mid with mascherano as the holding mid
keep kuyt on the right cause he can come in to the centre and score goals with johnson pushing up on the right doing the crosses and play agger not skrtel as agger as more of a attacking threat and can score goals play carragher as he oraganises the defence
jebote - July 14th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
aquilani would be great for 18 million. say we do sell xabi for 35 million. i think 18 million is a good price for a similar player a full 2 years younger. he may not be the great passer than xabi is. but he can use both feet immaculately is creative and comfortable on the ball. i dnt know if this article is believable or is yet anotherrumour. bt most of it seems to be based on pure specualtion. however, you never know, i would welcome him at the club.
Fact - July 14th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
I would have skrtle and agger as first choice as a am worried by carraghers extreme lack of pace which often see’s him out of position and his innability to jump.
millz - July 14th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
wake up alonso isn’t worth 20mill+negredo+v.d.v(negredo worth 10mill and vdv worth atleast 15mill) which = 45mill.
alonso out for 10mill + negredo + sneider
then offer dossena + 10million for aquilani
n’gog out on loan along with plesis
see how lucas plays if he plays awful offer 5mill + lucas for mata

johnny barnes - July 14th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
i would not have skrtle and agger first choice just yet, as even though he has a lack of pace the experience he brings and the way he reads the game is invaluable..

Hear were signing Tony Blair and his mate George W Bush for £22m …. Rafa recons it’s a steal
fernando clarke - July 14th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
he top class. if alonso does go this fella is one of the only players in world football who could fill the void!
Daglish - July 14th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
If Alonso goes then we should pull Gerrard back to CM and get Aguero or Villa to fit in behind Torres. And I know everyone will say straight away Gerrard is class CF but he is better CM in my oppinion and he gets goals but Villa or Aguero are world class goal scorers.
Ash T - July 15th, 2009 at 12:06 am
i agree with daglish
if we sell alonso buy aguero and move gerrard back
also buy silva for lm
then we have 4 players(benayoun, gerrard, silva, aguero) who can play just behind the striker
and silva can play right mid as well
and then maybe we can buy a young centre mid who can improve and not moan about siting on the bench maybe martinez, cattermole, noble, inler
we would have a greater goal threat playing gerrard as a centre mid and having 2 strikers
as alonso doesnt score enough goals
and with johnson pushing up the right and kuyt coming in the centre kuyt will get goals and johnson will provide the crosses
and with reira or silva on the left reira as skill good at crosses and gets goals and tall and with silva he may be small but he has bags of skill gets goals can play in loads of positions
torres and aguero can easier get 20+ goals
and gerrard as a centre mid can get 10+goals
kuyt got 15 goals last season from mostly right mid
and reira got 5 goals last year in his first season so hopefuly get more in his second season
league will be ours if we got aguero and silva hopefuly rafa will get them
TEDSUZUKI - July 15th, 2009 at 1:15 am
I don’t think Alonso will leave that easily. Unless Real are serious with their bid and meet Liverpool’s valuation – there isn’t a chance. Rafa has already said regardless whether Alonso puts in a transfer request or doesn’t – the valuation remains the same. Looks like he has learned a few things from his dealings with O’Neill over Barry.
For discussion sake, Aquilani is a good player. He may take a while to settle but he has been instrumental in some of Roma’s good performances. I suspect he won’t be quoted at 18 mill. More like 25 mill at least. Believe me, if Alonso is sold which I don’t think he will at 35 mill, Roma will want 30 mill or 36 mill! Then Roma will have to look for a replacement – and they will probably buy Van Der Vaat or Scneijder. Real Madrid will quote them 35 mill. So the money goes back to them…lol!!! If we can afford him, I think he will bring added value to the squad. A much much much better option than Cana.

Alonso will not be leaving of that i am sure.
Just bring in Silva from Valencia and Ruud Van Nistilroy will be a bargain plus he makes the bench look stronger.
We all know the Torres/Gerrard combination will be the stronger option. That Pairing scored over 50 goals between them arguebly the best in the premiership if they are fit.
So for me the striker we sign would be a back up the depth in sqaud by signing Silva and Van Nistilroy would be lovely.
The depth in the United squad won them the league and we can learn from that.

Most people say Aquilani is a talented player so lets wait and see, although i am pissed off at the fact that alonso is goin to leave.

Aquilani or Martinez?
jebote - July 15th, 2009 at 9:48 am
aquilani over martinez for me.
aquilani is already an established player that would improve the squad, and help bring us the title. martinez would be a buy for the future. someone to fill gerrards boots when he reaches a point where he isnt a regualr in the first team. although a tough decision, i have to go with who can bring us succes now, oh and aquilani would be more accustomed to playing in a deeper midfeld role aswell. good question 9torres. wonder what others think out there.
9torres - July 15th, 2009 at 10:19 am
how old is Aquilani? i can see your thinking for this, especially as it would leave us with a very young central midfield, Spearing 20, Martinez 20, Lucas 22/23 and Masch as the senior player at only 25, who is known to let emotions get the better of him at times.
I think Aquilani is a similar age to Alonso and of a similar temperment. I can’t help but remember that Italians very rarely succeed in England though, i can only think of Zola Vialli and Di Matteo, and to an extent Ravanelli but there are no players currently excelling in England. On the other hand i can name pleanty of Spaniards who have done well, Arteta, Reyes, 30% of the LFC squad etc. Maybe he will come over and do well.
Aquilani has the experience, but Martinez has also played 3 full seasons in La Liga and improved year on year. Ignacio Camacho is another good young midfielder. I think you might be right about finding someone for the here and now though.
jebote - July 16th, 2009 at 4:08 am
im pretty sure aquilani is 25. so same age as mascherano.
i like the point about how martinez has already played 3 seasons in la liga, and it is true about how he is improving and is a very promising player. but i look at martinez as more of a replacement for gerrard. but we’ll see what happens. to be honest i dont think we will sign either, but you never know. although i see martinez as a more realistic target as roma rarely let there own home grown players leave e.g totti, de rossi.
on a completely different topic, as a search goes for a back up striker, i really fancy radamel falcao, ive seen a fair few of his games and he seems like a real prospect, he is fast, skillfull, and scores goals, id even go as far as comparing him to the next aguero and i dont think the premier league would bother him to much as he seems to have a small, but strong build. it doesnt bother mascherano so it shouldnt bother him. anyone agree??

Finally! Someone talking about football!!
As regards Falcao i haven’t really seen much of him, but i have heard that he is a real prospect. Having said that i dont think he could be much better than David N’Gog. Having watched him again last night he looked like he has the potential to be a great player, like a quick strong Peter Crouch. The fact is he is also prepared to work hard for the team. Some of the touches he showed last night were class. Same goes for Spearing and Pacheco. Benayoun and Johnson we’re also really good.
