Liverpool to Replace Alonso with £13m Brazilian!
by Steven Constable on July 14th, 2009 227 words | 30 commentsRafa linked with up and coming star.
The Rumour
Interest is mounting for Brazilian hot property Hernanes who is strongly linked with a move to Italy but has also attracted the interest of a number of Premier League sides. Liverpool are the latest club to be linked with the playmaker in the Brazilian press with claims that Rafa Benitez will replace want-away midfield schemer Xabi Alonso with the talented South American.
The Source: (Football Pools)
The Analysis
Hernanes is a player very much in demand and was voted the most promising young up and coming star in the world by The Times who said of the 24 year old;
“Perhaps the most-hyped South American prospect of last year, the hugely-talented Brazilian is an attacking midfield playmaker, leading to inevitable Kaka comparisons. How long before he moves to Europe?”
The double Brazilian League winner looks very likely to leave Sao Paulo for Europe this summer and now it’s emerged that Anfield could be his destination. He’s been described as supremely talented and with great vision and footballing brain and seems more than ready to cope with the Premier League, but would Rafa make a move for a player without European experience?
The Likelihood
Hernanes to Liverpool: Seems to be the talk of the town right now and could well be considered a good replacement.

So if Alonso goes we are going to sign Cambiasso for £18m, Hamsik for £15m, Martinez for £11m, Hernanes (above) for £13m, Aquilani (below) for £18m!!! The list goes on! Anyone’s guess who we will sign if anyone!
Hernanes ive seen very very good player, has skill, vision and flair…..will no doubt become a major brazil X1 player in the near future and if allowed to develop sustainably will become the next BIG thing.
What I would do if I wanted him: £10m plus Lucas Leiva

darn you warrenisaredfan, thought i had that….
like what your saying above, great list of replacements above…
my money is prob on martinez or mata from valencia….
although Hermanes is very good, i do think that the brazilians do better in italy/spain then here, both lucus and uniteds anderson i think would be very very good players oin that league same goes for hermanes….
i would like to see hamsik but i di think he is too slow for prem, same goes with aquilani….
Cambiasso would be very good signing but he is old…..
i would have loved to have got diego, i think playing in the bundesliga is very good practice for the prem…
although it doesn’t explain voronin…. so there are exceptions….
warrenisaredfan what you think about a cheeky bid for modric??
johnny barnes - July 14th, 2009 at 6:33 pm

the bundesliga is very similar to the premiership in style, good point maybe there are other players doing well in the german league that might suit our needs
Rock of Anfield - July 14th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
Warrenisaredfan I agree with the list. How many people do we wanna be linked with. I saw on Sky Spts Nws that LFC r linked with Ribery!
But Hernandes has already proved himself. He is a regular in the Brazil National side and from what i’ve seen he is a pretty good mf.
But if we sell Xabi 2 Real, I want Wesley Sneijder in exchange!

Benayoun for Attacking Mid/ Second Striker Position, it’s his favourite position. Plus he’s had one of the most consistent performances towards the end of the season.
So if we did sell Alonso, we’d have

Johnson_____Carragher_____Skrtel/Agger______Aurelio/Insua
__________Mascherano______Gerrard ________________
Kuyt____________________________Riera/ {[New Left Player Wanted]}

Babyangus - July 14th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
Such a shame if Alonso goes as I think he brings huge stability to the team, he is rarely caught out of position or over committed to an attack leaving holes as Gerrard’s runs can sometimes do. I much prefer Gerrard as a second attacker where all of the positives in his game are highlighted and there isn’t so much of a burden on him to be everywhere at once, even the best attacking midfielder in the world would look ordinary trying to play as a holding player. Alonso is 27 and in his prime now, to pick a player who needs any development or bedding in time would eb a backwards step we just can’t take now, this team is ready and needs to win now. Cambiasso is not old, still 28 and also in his prime, whilst I’m not a huge fan of championing particular players or living out football manager fantasies on forums I do think this is the type of player we need if Alosno or Mascherano go. A player in their prime who plays the same position, so there is as little adapting needed as possible, maybe we can buy Martinez or other 20-24 year olds once we have won the title, begin rebuilding our core, but not yet, let’s get this team the title they now deserve.
TEDSUZUKI - July 15th, 2009 at 12:46 am
Donovan Reid, I share your thoughts – YAWN! Look, let’s step back and look at the situation. No one from Liverpool thus far has said anything about Alonso is to hand in a transfer request or he is definitely going, blah, blah, blah. You think that Rafa or Liverpool board will actually communicate those behind doors discussions with say the Sun? Or Daily Mail? Or they will do the same with some Madrid owned papers.
So what’s official from Liverpool is two things. First, both Masch and Alonso are not for sale. Secondly, just like Ribery, he is not for sale but quoted at 70 mill. So nothing wrong at all with Liverpool quoting Alonso’s transfer fee at 35 mill. They can even quote 300 mill if they want to. That’s really a way of telling them to get lost. Thirdly, Alonso has been honest and nothing wrong with that! He said he would like to to Real but at the same time, he is just as happy staying at Liverpool. These are official lines.
So stay calm. Who the hell cares what Real’s manager (what’s his name – he won’t last long anyway) says? Of course Rafa can come out declaring his interest in anybody! Whether that’s ethical, that’s another story altogether. When you think of Real, you won’t think they are ethical bunch. They are just a group of mobster who thinks because they’ve got money, they will do whatever they like. Not all wealthy clubs conduct their business that way. So let’s not shoot Alonso. To be fair, he has been honest. What’s wrong with that? If an alternative employment comes, we all will sit down and consider it especially if it has good potential and prospect. Why can’t Alonso do the same?
TEDSUZUKI - July 15th, 2009 at 1:07 am
It’s interesting too those who concluded this is as a result of Rafa’s poor management. So Masch supposed wanting to go is his fault too? When he just arrived and probably haven’t even warm up his office chair yet and Owen insisted on leaving, so that’s his poor man management too? I don’t put Rafa at the pedestal as if he is infallible but we got to chill out a bit.
First, Liverpool didn’t have much cash muscles if you recall the situation last year. If Rafa needs to improve the squad, that means he needs to sell in order to buy. What do you expect him to do? Alonso seems sensible option because even though he wasn’t brilliant apart from last season, he is a player who could raise some cash significantly compared to the likes of Voronin in the market without disrupting the pattern of the team too much.
Secondly, it was the press who says Barry was meant to replace him. Did they quote Rafa? No one from Liverpool said that! I suspect Barry was bought to cover the left wing even though he isn’t much of a winger. That said, again I am just adding to the speculation too. Eventually they got Riera who I think is a better option than Barry at a much better value (8 million and 18 million is a lot of difference).
Thirdly, last season same time, i recalled the some of the same people were going on about Rafa doing a great job and selling Alonso is a great piece of management decision. Now the same people is crying foul and that Rafa’s poor man management has boomerang back at him. The reality is when we saw Alonso was just doing all right, many of us felt it’s time for him to go if the deal is right. Suddenly this season he blossomed and everybody says he should not be sold. That’s reasonable because Alonso did step up. At times last season, quite frankly, I think Liverpool has one of the strongest midfield in Europe behind Barca. Now we if we are allowed to think like that – why can’t Rafa too?
Fourthly, damn Real Madrid. Look at their shameless courting of every player!!!! I applaud Bayern for telling them to kiss their ass about trying to unsettle Ribery. That’s how they go about their business. Frankly, this is Real Madrid and with the amount they are paying, most players except Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard or Reina will turn their heads. Real has always known to do this and they know it works.
lets bomb old trafford - July 15th, 2009 at 2:04 am
id take him we cant keep judging players on the likes of babel and lucas just because they havnt performed well theres not many players who can replace alonso i agree
lets bomb old trafford - July 15th, 2009 at 2:07 am
and no we dont want sneidger from real madrid did u see his attitude when we hammered them at anfield? he wudnt even move id rather have van der vaart
TEDSUZUKI - July 15th, 2009 at 3:51 am
Bomb Old Trafford, you are very observant!!! that’s my assessment of sneijder. He was totally toothless against Liverpool. I have seen in some matches that he wouldn’t even bothered running. He has ability but attitude is just as important. I for one wouldn’t go for him. I am still all for Silva though but at the current super inflated market, I doubt the transfer will take place this summer.
9torres - July 15th, 2009 at 8:41 am
Morning all,
Alonso is more than likely going, it’s going to be a big miss, but there are replacements. Hernanes would be great but how long until he too wants to move to Spain or Italy?? My first choice replacement would be Javi Martinez. He seems to be a player who actually wants to come to Liverpool and has the ability to succeed. Plus at 20 years of age he has even more improvement to come. Tall (6ft 3), strong, quick, has vision, can shoot, what more could we ask for? More importantly he is willing to learn and adapt to Liverpools style. at 10-12m for a players who is on the verge of a full spanish cap and only 20 years of age i think it’s a bargain. The fact Rafa has been following him for the last 3 years indicates that maybe the time is right.
At a maximum of £12m we would still have the funds left over to sign Silva.
We would have achieved our aims of the close season in signing a right back and a creative midfielder, replacing a players who has left and all without disrupting the team too much. Also we have added to our plethora of exciting youth players.
We might even have funds left in to bring in Falcao or another young striker. IMHO though by not signing another striker it gives chances to Babel, N’gog, and Nemeth, which is something that a lot of people complained about a lack of last season.
We will also have Gerrard, Mascherano, Martinez, Lucas and Spearing available for midfield.
Win win anyone??

I partly agree with what you have said. Javi Martinez is a wonder kid… Will be a future spanish star and thats a fact. However i do see Barca going in for him as a replacement fo xavi in a few years time. I think that yes Masch and Xabi are the spine of the team, and all us fas love them, but there heads have been turned and i say let Masch go for £25mil and hold out for £30mil for Xabi.
Id use the funds from the Masch sale to purchase Aqualiani and Javi Martinez. There your getting an established Italian international and future star in Martinez. So thats a 2 for 1 swap. As with Alonso, you take the money and play the market or swap a few of there players. Id be interested in Marcelo for fullback, though i c\nt see Rafa haing him and Johnson as 2 attacking fullbacks. Though if i had to take 2 players id have Diarra, another holding midfielder build as the next Makelele, and van der vart plus cash. That strengtherns midfield.
As your comment on Ngog, Nemeth and babel… they cant cut it against the top teams. You know from an early age if players will be star. Like aguero, walcot etc… these players are not good enough. Rafa needs to get rid of Vorinan and get some sort of top striker to go with Fernando. Id say Podolski or maybe a cheeky bid for Van the man nistelroy. However, with imploding transfer prices, Liverpool have to sacrifice to gain
Sell Masch and Xabi quick, and build for August
Thedias Kasaira - July 15th, 2009 at 9:23 am
If Alonso want to go let him go. You cannot keep an unhappy player in the team. We have other good midfielders. Use his money to buy striker David Villa to partner torres and Silva who can play anywhere across the front
me - July 15th, 2009 at 11:45 am
Dead right 9torres i rate Javi Martinez highly and seems he wants to play for pool we should go get him also spot on about ngog and nemeth time for these lads to step up and stake their claim as a first team starter as for babel altough he has plenty of tallent great pace and rocket shot and also can head the ball he seems to be like a headless chicken at times running for the sake of running hopefully he can get this out of his game and become a top player
MarkindublinIRE - July 15th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
to be honest i dont think alonso is worth all the fuss…he had a good season last year,But did he help us to win anything? We missed gerard and torres alot last year ,especially torres ,and other players had to steop up and show there worth ,alonso happened to step up for the best part of the season..but sure isnt that what he is paid to do…he scored a few goals here and there last year not tooo many but a few…and to be honest his shooting and finishing isnt very good by any means…and iv also seen him plat alot of sloopy passes throughout the seasons gone..id take 35 million for him…we could do with the cash, keep mascherano for at least one more year if possible,35 mill plus the sale of 2 or 3 others ..would give rafa the chance to bring in 3 or 4 new faces and strenghten the squad..and the squad does need new faces….last year prooved it more than ever…so stop moanon about alonso ..sell him..and get on with it…time is running out for gerard ..and we need to get the best from hin over the next few seasons if we want to win the title soon…so its time to strenghten the first team with some more real quality..
MarkindublinIRE - July 15th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
bring in cambiasso ,play him with mascherano..and bring in martinez for the future…sneijder ,silva or mata ….a new striker and atart bringing in some of the new young talent we bought…Nemeth looks like he could cause a few problems in the premier league…bring him in next season…darby ,spearing should also be given games …
anonymous - November 12th, 2009 at 10:34 am
buy him pls
anonymous - November 13th, 2009 at 9:11 am
We need a striker that can help Torres. Ngog is doing fine but he is still young.
I like the storry of Calton Cole. I thinkg he will fit the bill very well. So Benetez go and get us a striker in january
