Italian sources claim that Benitez is very keen on landing top notch Serie A star.
Il Corriere dello Sport understands Liverpool have flown to Italy for talks with Roma about the prospect of signing Alberto Aquilani.
Yesterday Roma fans staged a protest expressing their anger at the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market this summer.
As takeover talks come to a standstill and with no new investment in sight, Roma will have to sell if they are to buy ahead of next season.
Reports suggest Liverpool have identified Aquilani as the perfect replacement for Xabi Alonso, who appears ready to leave for Real Madrid.
Il Corriere believes Roma have told Aquilani that they will sell him should a decent offer arrive.

This deal seems to have been off and then back on again many times. Originally the player’s agent said that no contact had been made but then changed his tune. Apparently Liverpool officials have met with Roma about a potential deal but that was in some ways dependent on the Xabi Alonso situation, which still seems unresolved.
Alberto Aquilani is a top notch midfielder and the Serie A side does have a habit of selling a good player most summer’s and the Italian international could be the player to leave this time. Having failed to qualify for the Champions League the Stadio Olimpico side needs to sell before they can consider buying and therefore such a deal could be in the offing.
Aquilani to Liverpool: If Alonso leaves then this deal becomes a whole lot more likely.
