Hughes manages to snare a top notch defender at last!
Manchester City moved on from the disappointment of missing out on England captain John Terry by striking a £15million deal for Arsenal defender Kolo Toure.
The 28-year-old has agreed personal terms of around £120,000 per week — doubling his wages at Arsenal. He is expected to be unveiled later this week and could even figure in Saturday’s friendly at Barnsley.
His signing ends a nine-month pursuit by City manager Mark Hughes who first earmarked the Ivory Coast centre half back in November. Toure is one of three defenders Hughes wants to bring in as he re-assesses his targets following Terry’s decision to stay at Chelsea.

This news will not please Arsenal fans but will greatly encourage those at Eastlands that were worried that whilst going forward they should find the net they were very shaky at the back. Kolo Toure has been offered a huge salary hike but I am sure many Gunners fans will like to think this wasn’t the only motivating factor for his Emirates exit, unlike with Adebayor where this was clearly the only thing he cares about.
Kolo has had problems at the north London club, issues with William Gallas as well as the repercussions of this in fighting left the 28 year old feeling unhappy and whilst Wenger tried manfully to resolve the underlying causes of the unrest it clearly hasn’t prevented what seems sure to be a done deal.
The Ivorian could well boast being one of the bargain’s of the Premier League after arriving at the club in 2002 for just £150k, and will be sorely missed by the club’s fans who could always rely on his determination and stamina. He is sure to get a warm reception if or more likely when, he comes up against his former club, whereas Emmanuel will probably do well to fain injury on such occasions.
Toure to Man City: Deal almost completed.
