Liverpool Boss Has Wasted £30m In One Year: Fair Comment or Rubbish?
by YNWA on July 28th, 2009 187 words | 38 commentsThis source doesn’t beat around the bush!
Over the last year, Rafael Benitez has wasted a huge chunk of the club’s money on transfers that, for whatever reason, just didn’t work out. With news that Liverpool have reportedly accepted a £4.3m bid from Napoli for left-back Andrea Dossena, this money-wasting trend seems set to continue.
I think we can all agree that last summer was an utter disaster for when it came to transfers. In total, Benitez spent approximately £37m on the following players:
Robbie Keane – £20m
Albert Riera – £8m
Andrea Dossena – £7m
David N’gog – £1.5m
Philip Degen – Free
From the above, Albert Riera was the only worthy buy from last summer. Keane was subbed/on the bench for 28 of his 33 appearances and completely mismanaged by Benitez; Dossena had two good games all season; N’gog is destined for the scrapheap (how many young players have made it as first team regulars under Benitez?); and Philip Degen – even though he was free – has been a complete waste of space. You’re nowt but a lazy hack mate. I see that you have not taken into account that we did not spend £20,000,000 on keane as it was in installments for a start. More like 4 million. Or the fact that the money spent still has sale value. Or that we had our highest league finish in the prem ever, lost the least games, scored the most goals, etc.
Your failing in maths is only surpassed by you faliure in journalism. Get a proper job.
redryan - July 28th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
I feel at this point it’s only fair to point out that this is rafa’s first year in sole control of transfers. Admitedly it doesn’t look to be a succesful closed season but so far all the proposed deals are just that. Proposed deals.
There have been mistakes made at liverppol on a boardroom level that Rafa’s reputation in the market has payed the price for.
He is apparently working under a miserly budget payed for by two men who communication seems to baffle so he still isn’t getting the backing he and our club deserves.
He would do himself a great service by standing upto Real and his want away players and telling them all to go and fuck themselves.
If he toughens up this year whilst we still have a squad that is able to compete then he will find that next time around people are less likely to take the piss.

rafa didnt sign kean parry did, ngog looks more promising now than at first, riera was a decent signing for 8 mill, degen was free, so it looks like rafa wasted 7 mill on dossena but rafa can’t be blamed for that as he is italy’s best left and just isnt suited to the prem……idiot

kash your a prick. study that list and you will see rafas done well considering what he inherited, lfc were in a mess when he took over
Kash - July 28th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
When rafa took over what he “inherited” was:
Goalkeepers
1 Jurek Dudek, 22 Chris Kirkland, 29 Patrice Luzi
Defenders
Carl Medjani, 2 Stephane Henchoz, 36 Jon Otsemobor, 3 Steve Finnan, John Welsh, 21 Djimi Traore, 4 Sami Hyypia, 15 Salif Diao, 23 Jamie Carragher
Midfielders
16 Dietmar Hamann, 18 John Arne Riise, 13 Danny Murphy, 28 Bruno Cheyrou, 17 Steven Gerrard, 25 Igor Biscan, 11 Vladimir Smicer
Forwards
10 Michael Owen, 9 El Hadji Diouf, 20 Anthony Le Tallec, 5 Milan Baros, 24 Florent Sinama Pongolle, 7 Harry Kewell, 8 Emile Heskey, 26 Richie Partridge
Djibril Cissé
In 2000-01 they won the Football Association Challenge Cup Winners + the League Cup + UEFA Cup Winners
In 2001 they won UEFA Cup Winners + European Super Cup Winners
2002-03 they won League Cup Winners
And in 2003-2004 they finished 4th. Rafa took over in 2004, so studying the team he “inherited” and the results that preceded him, i don’t think LFC were in that much of a mess.
Guillem - July 28th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Kash- Almost all of those signings bar Keane and Pennant were sold for a profit or their value has risen. Rafa has benn astute in the transfer window and Livrpool have consistently improved year on year. When Rafa first joined we were hanging on to fourth place, now we have not only stuck with massive spending Chelsea and Man U but are very close to overtaking them. This isn’t what happens to teams with wasteful managers.
JimBob - July 28th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Yeah wouldn’t agree that Liverpool were in a mess when Rafa took over. After all, he won Champions League 2005 with the team that he inherited. But Kash, get a grip son, most of the transfers you listed were good deals, barring the really cheap ones (Barragan, Josemi) or free! While I do agree it apears that Rafa is not the king of the transfer market, we should also bare in mind that this is his first summer in total charge of transfers.
It was quite clear to most Liverpool fans that it wasn’t Rafa, but Moores who bought Keane. And Dossena, I think most people could have made that mistake. Poor argument there Kash, I’d say most of those signings were good ones, excluding, like I say the really cheap ones or the free ones because they don’t count!!!
Ngog destined for the scrapheap? Bit too early for that isn’t it!?
By the way… Well put danny van!
Zach - July 28th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Rafa, for sure, is not the best when it comes to transfers. Having said that, he does not have a big balance sheet and had Parry meddling in the transfers. Based on his record, I would say it’s rather even stevens in transfer. Kudos must go to him for key signings in Torres and Alonso as well as for persuading Gerrard to stay.
One thing I would like to see is our the two fairies who own the club go. Their stay will spell further trouble for the club. At some point in time last year, they had the chance to cash out with some middle eastern consortium expressing interest. But those greedy b*stard stuck out for more than their stake’s worth… hope they lose their pants, after selling out their American franchise. In my opinion, the Americans should just stick to baseball and american football.
The other thing I would like to see is the club splashing out some serious dough on just one good player to link up with Gerrard and Torres. An effective triangle is the one key to unlocking defenses and if we can get someone like a Ribery to play one twos with T and G, we might be able to see more goals. The last thing we want is for Rafa to split a major income from transfer on two to three 2nd tier players…

In all fairness i can see where your coming from Kash and for most part i agree, but you can hardly call (1) Luis Garcia, Barcelona, £6,000,000 (2) Xabi Alonso, Sociedad, £10,700,000 (3) Jose Reina, Villareal, £6,000,000 (4) Daniel Agger, Brøndby, £5,800,000 (5) Fábio Aurélio, Valencia, Free (6) Dirk Kuyt, Feyenoord, £9,000,000 (7) Fernando Torres, Atletico Madrid, £20,200,000 (8) Yossi Benayoun, West Ham, £5,000,000 (9) Javier Mascherano, MSI, £17,000,000 (10) Albert Riera, Espanyol, £8,000,000 wastes of money
Yes Rafa Has no doubt wasted a Lot of the money that he has had, and No he has had most of the control of that money (Control was only given to parry after the way Rafa chased Barry), but the name i mention above are all good buy’s
For the four players mentioned in this article Albert Riera was a good buy …Philip Degen – even though he was free – has been a complete waste of space and wages

Benitez is at a critical point with his club of three years. English football is full of the careers of managers who believed that they could strong-arm their club’s boards on the back of successful seasons. Some found themselves quietly shoved back into their places, others were gradually hustled to the exit. In recent years Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, even Gérard Houllier at Liverpool have discovered that trophies can allow you to ride the tide of public opinion for only so long.
It is a dangerous game. Benitez evidently feels that his record makes him untouchable for now and that it is the duty of the club to keep pace with his ambition. The heat is now on the club, which is evidently how the Liverpool manager wants it, although he cannot blame every defeat and setback upon the club’s infrastructure. Even now it seems implausible that Liverpool will seriously compete with Chelsea and Manchester United in the transfer market – especially with a new stadium in the next three or four years.
Yesterday, Benitez hinted at delays and mismanagement in the signing of players, and stressed that he held Gillett and Hicks responsible for backing him with transfer money. He said a lot of things that will be used in evidence against him if he fails.
His transfer record has not been exemplary so far. Xabi Alonso, Jose Reina and Peter Crouch can be counted among his successes but a closer scrutiny of profit and loss tells another story. Benitez should try recouping his £4.5m when he sells Mark Gonzalez to Real Betis or reassessing the price of £9m for Dirk Kuyt. And will Gabriel Paletta ever be worth £2m again? Over the last two transfer windows Benitez has spent £18.3m on Kuyt, Jermaine Pennant and Arbeloa alone.
If his pursuit of a prolific striker is indeed a priority then even players like Samuel Eto’o and Fernando Torres will have to be persuaded that a 4-5-1 system in which Kuyt in particular has had to struggle alone can also suit them. Big name European goalscorers joining Liverpool may just consider themselves like a string quartet going on tour with Bob Dylan. A nice option to have but not guaranteed to be central to the action every night.
Benitez’s words will have reverberated with Liverpool’s new owners, they will surely be echoed by the fans but they cannot have sat easily with his players. They had barely been out the stadium 10 hours and already their manager had apportioned the blame. It was not him – with his 20-hour working days and unstinting devotion – whom he held responsible but a team of players that, he said in the nicest possible way, were not good enough.
Benitez will have to hope this brinkmanship really does open the door to a new side – now that his existing squad know exactly what he thinks of them.

Guillem Liverpool’s net spend from 2004-2009 – £110,460,000
Man Utd’s net spend from 2004-2009 – £93,400,000.
So yes he “stuck with massive spending” United, and hes done it by spending more than Fergie.
JimBob and Donavan how can you say most of his signings were good when, only 10 of them could actually be called any good, by people who actually support liverpool. And im sure there are a lot of people who will disagree with you when you say Luis Garcia and Yossi Benayoun are good. And £17 mil for Mascherano is a heck of a lot.
millz Keane was actually sold for a reported £16,000,000….
“n’gog a waste of money-no” – Actually Millz the guys started 14 times against much lesser oposition and managed to score only twice.. that being said its a bit early to judge.
Guys please try to get some FACTS before you try to dispute what im saying… the proof is all there to see.

17 million 4 mascherano ain’t a heck of a lot considering he’s one of the best DM in the world, captain of the argies and now worth 35-40 million! Thought u were dealing in facts! LOL and by the way, Garcia was good enough to be a champions league winner! FACT
JimBob - July 28th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
Kash, most of his signings were good. It’s the really cheap signings that he made for the reserves that have not been so great, even though our reserves were crowned champions of England. And yeah was gonna comment on the Keane remark, we made a loss on him in 6 months! But it wasn’t Rafa’s decision to bring him in! And I reiterate that it is far too early to judge Ngog.
I do, however, agree that some of Benitez’s signings have been a flop. But definitely not most. He is not that shit in the transfer market, otherwise we would not have finished second in the league with his team, losing less than anyone else, and scoring more than anyone else.
Kash - July 28th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Allan Red 2 the bone your as much of a joke as your name, just cause you say somthing, it does’nt make it true or a fact, i.e “he’s one of the best DM in the world, and now worth 35-40 million!” Calling him one of the best in the world is an opinion, and 30-40 mil, you’ve just plucked out of thin air.

Kash- By 2004 ManU had Rio, Rooney, Ronaldo, Van Nistlerooy, Scholes and Giggs. Liverpool had Gerrard. Thats the only top class player we had whereas Man Unt had a team full. If we consider your stats as acurate then we’ve got to near enough the same leve as ManU not by spending over 200m as Chelsea(who were at the same level as us) but by buying players and selling until the core of our team is sorted. eg. Sissoko, buy 5m, sell 9m, buy Masch 17m, worth 30-40m, fantastic building. Bellamy, buy 6m, sell 9m, buy Torres 20m, worth 50-100m, fantastic building.
The liverpool team Rafa inherited was worth nothing. Our only valuble asset was Gerrard who still at that point had his doubters. Remember he never hit double figures before Rafa came and now he scores for fun.
Rafa has turned me as a Liverpool fan from an expectant Cahampions league finish to a trophy and title finish and that is enough evidence that he has done a great job in every department.

Mow im a villa fan so my opinion is unbiased….
But ok, to all liverpool fans… Lets just say and its quite possible that liverpool could go yet another season tropheyless and man u over take them with 20 league titles, will you still trust in Rafa and his team???
He has spent as much as fergie has in the last 5 years and fergie has made a massive profit on players sales compared to rafa and look what united have achieved in those 5 years???
My honest opinion is that liverpool missed their big chance last season and that hs to affect them, they are now feeling the major unrest with their owners and have not got the money or buying power than city, chelsea and united have…
So if its another tropheyless season fo you die hards yet again turn on your manager???
Ps stay away from mr o neill next summer
Zach - July 29th, 2009 at 4:07 am
We need to get rid of gilett and hicks first… to be fair, Fergie and Wenger probably did better than Rafa in the transfer market, but the man is no slouch..
Also, in 2004, as Guillem mentioned, ManU had a first class team, we had Gerrard only, thanks to the Graeme Souness who destroyed the team that Daglish built and Houllier, who started to buy some really bad replacements.
Now that we have a very good first team with Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Alonso, Mascherano, Kuyt, Gerrard, Benyanoun, Riera and Torres, (Nemeth, if I may add is one to look out for the future) hopefully Mr Benitez starts to splash the 20m and above cash on quality signings instead of splitting the cash to buy two tier 2s. We don’t need additional good and hardworking players… we need someone who can change games like Gerrard and Torres.

All are very interesting comments and it can be argued that everyone is stating an opinion based on what they believe to be facts.
What I would say is that although he “inherited” a club that had won trophies, that team/squad was in many ways punching above their own weight(and i dont mean that in a put down sense).
What I suppose Rafa had to do was identify what areas needed improvement and proceed to rectify what he saw was the problem for long term and sustained success.
Any manager successful or otherwise is gonna make mistakes in the transfer market but all along sticking to his principles and improving the club as a whole,is what fans want.Ppl claim that Wenger or Fergie or O´Neill are better but they to have signed chumps. For every Ronaldo theres a Kleberson, for every Henry theres a Senderos and for every Young theres a Knight. What Rafa has now is a squad/team that now not only fills him with confidence but supporters with genuine hope that you can win the prem, which if you look at the squad he inherited didnt.
He cant say that he has had no cash or support from the board as he has spent some wedge in his time in charge. But little by little he is gathering a group of players that can and will test anyone.
However this season is I believe the season that he has to get to that next level meaning landing that prem trophy and to be fair no arguments.
Simply because he has been there for a long enough while now has used alot of excuses for not being able to win the prem aswell aquiring his own players.
One thing he has to do which is obvious is get the masch/alonso saga sorted asap.

JCWW - July 29th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
firstly one of the best articles for along time so well done to everyone who has added at times some excellent & thoughtful opinions.
my opinion is highly mixed yes rafa (& I make this clear for those who dont know me DONT TRUST) has purchased signings that have had a major impact. but if you work it out consistently as I have tried to do will maybe add or fuel fire to an arguement that is evidence before & after every game amongst reds either for or against.
this is an example of success seperated into several tiers.
tier 1
torres, reina these two have been the most consistent and are the spine of the team.
torres speaks for himself…whilst when reina is missing because rafa dismisses the cup games against lower teams his absense is clearly evident….how the fuck does a GK need rest is beyond me.
tier 2
xabi, masch, agger these three I would certainly say at most times have been a success.
xabi tho’ & lets not forget for 18 months before his best year in ared shirt…was very poor & got worse with each game why….obvious reason his the relationship between him and the manager….I would love him to say but…this madrid bollocks is so boring I wish he would just go away & enjoy the rest of his career. rafa has not done enough to keep him…& before anyone shouts what…just watch & listen to his interviews rafa being rafa of which he is very astute at just directs the question back…which at times maybe clever..but also embarrasing.
as for masch yes possibly the no1 DM in the world…but his behaviour & that slug of an agent have taken the proverbial piss out of our club. 18 months ago he was nowhere…& this is how he repays us…rafa earn my respect drag him into the office by his argie arse & thrash him until his cheeks bleed….& tell him to either shut up of FUCK OFF! & get as much of the cash one can!
as for agger my many comments of this lad is always positive…potentialy the future captain of my team..he is that good…the best cente half in the making since a skinny lad from north of the border arrived back in those late 70’s….he can be that good.
3 tier.
these players are the one s who have had impact at times that have left you purring for more & then at times shouting expletives that would make a whore blush!
yossi, and yes garcia….these two in particular have or had offered so much to our team…flashes of brilliance that would be bracketted in the league of gerrard & torres but sadly even tho’ yossi is more consistent…than garcia…sometimes would make you go ?????
garcia’s volley juve….one of my fave nights of all time….fa cup semi…
yossi who this year has added a balance to the team & definately improved because of him.
tier 4
this is the list of potentials who have caught the eye and could be future top draw players…skirtle, insua, johnson.
skirtlet is a fans fave hard as a dockers penis who has been at sea for several months and has just finally docked next to a bustling red light district. he is solid but still needs to sort his positional awareness out…but hopefully with the guidance of carra….the future CH alongside agger.
insua…brilliant prospect….so calm and resassuring on the ball…very rarely gives the ball away…this kid is an absolute gem of a find…hopefully the liverpool LB for this season & beyond…take the risk rafa?
johnson…cant judge yet but englands best right back thats ? id have richards ahead of him….but much better than arbeloa fucking good riddance!
teir 5
aurelio, crouch, reira & babels of the world…ability….reira in particular offered us at times some decent service & balance…but for the future…big ?
babel….simply playing under the wrong manager full stop!
crouch heart of a lion but the looks of a deformed girraffe…never moaned…& respect for abbey clancy what a notch on the bedpost!
fabio…to injury prone…but when he has a run again adds balance.
as for the rest well were do I begin…the toilet tier.
pennant, bellamy, dossena, arbeloa, josemi, keane(wasted the career of a top player), gonzolas, etc etc etc etc etc…the list is sadly embarrassing.

I know before anyone mentions their is an obvious admission…dirk kuyt please stnad up..please stand up im the ugly dutch so please stand up….
this man as so many for & against yes he is better than most of the shite rafa has bought….but beyond his obvious abilities…what extra he adds is questionable…however I will allow him to be between the 2 & 3rd tier & I suppose even tho’ it pains me to say it at the moment he is a better option than most…but for the future????????????????? but this guy is a rafa type of player!
Richard Money hes the one for me fatty…hes the the one for me fatty…..
