Deal almost done!

Xabi Alonso training with Liverpool Football Club on the day it is reported he put in a formal transfer request to Real Madrid

When Alonso officially informed Liverpool last week that he wanted to move to the Bernabeu, the Reds were given encouragement by cashstrapped Roma to open talks with Aquilani.

Liverpool are ready to strike a compromise deal with Madrid at about £28m – less than their initial £32m valuation, However, it is still £12m above what Liverpool were willing to accept from Juventus for Alonso a year ago. (Sunday Mirror)

Alonso, 27, spent the earlier part of this week in Spain on a short break with his family in San Sebastian. Now it appears he will soon be on his way back to his homeland to join the new Galacticos.

Alonso had been told several times by Benitez that he wanted to keep him and the proof was Benitez’s valuation.

But when he finally put his request in writing, an act confirmed by club officials yesterday, there was little option but for Benitez to reluctantly cut the asking price and negotiate in the hope of reaching a compromise at £28m. (Sunday Express)

It seems that £28m is the magical number and to be fair whilst its a far cry from the astronomical fees Real has paid for Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s more than we could have hoped for last summer and would represent the biggest transfer fee received by the club for a player, so not to be sniffed at.

My head is going to explode if this deal isn’t done soon!
